The body of Vikrant, a student of Star Public High School, was found floating in the Beas between Tooran village and Taggar Khurd in the morning today. The boy drowned along with three others students of Star Public High School, who had gone there on a trip.

Duped of lakhs, farmer commits suicide

The dollar dreams took another life when a farmer, Lakhwinder Singh (60), committed suicide after being duped by two travel agents of Rs 18 lakh which he had given to the accused to send his son and son-in-law to Spain.

A resident of Akal Garh Dhapian village in the Jandiala Guru area, Lakhwinder hanged himself late last night in his house. As the family was sleeping in other rooms they came to know about the incident only the next morning.

According to information received here, Lakhwinder Singh had borrowed the huge amount from his close relations to send his son Manjinder and son-in-law Baldev Singh of Gazi Nangal to Spain. However, he found it difficult to repay the loan amount after the travel agent ran away with the advance money and did not send them abroad even after a year has passed. The accused travel agents have been identified as Jaspal Singh Kaka and Harminder Singh of Dera Baba Nanak. The police has registered a case under section 306, IPC, while no arrest has been made so far. The police authorities said that investigations were on and the accused had absconded.

Masked men loot Rs 50,000

Tarn Taran, June 11
Four masked armed persons looted Rs 50,000 from Avtar Singh of Brahmpura village last late evening from Dehra Sahib, 25 km from here, after injuring him.

A case under sections 382 and 324 of the IPC has been registered at Sarhali police station.

Avtar Singh, in his statement to the police, said he was coming back after collecting cash from his customers when the masked persons, who were on two motorcycles, signalled him to stop and attacked him. The looters took away Rs 50,000 and a Nokia mobile phone set. Avtar has been admitted to the Community Health Centre, Sarhali.

Avtar said one of the accused had been identified by him as his mask got off his face in the scuffle. — OC

Three arrested with counterfeit notes

Amritsar, June 11
The police today nabbed three persons in two different cases and seized fake Indian currency worth Rs 51,800 from them.

The Vijay Nagar police arrested Paramvir Singh, alias Pamma, of Housing Board Colony, Ranjit Avenue, and Jiwan Lal of Mustafabad, Batala Road, and seized fake Indian currency worth Rs 48,000 and one printer from their possession.

A case under section 489 A, B, C of the IPC has been registered at the Sadar police station. The police said the accused had been involved in the printing of counterfeit notes for the past four to five months. Further investigations are on in this regard.

Meanwhile, a police party of Sarai Amanat Khan police station, on a tip-off, intercepted two persons on a motorcycle near Manakpura village.

However, one of them fled while his accomplice, Balwant Singh of Dode village under Jhabal police station (Tarn Taran) was arrested on the spot. Fake Indian currency worth Rs 3,800 was recovered from him. The absconding person was identified as Dilbagh Singh of Gandiwind village. A case under section 489 A, B, C of the IPC has been registered at SA Khan police station. Raids are being carried out to arrest the absconder.

More robberies by biker thieves

Hoshiarpur, June 11
Four motorcycle-borne persons robbed a couple of their cash, ornaments and mobiles near Khijarpur village last night. The miscreants also snatched the mobiles from three youths, who had come to the rescue of the couple.

According to the police sources, Tarsem Lal and his wife Kamaljit Kaur were robbed by four youths, when they were going on a scooter to his in-laws house at Shahu Da Pind village.

One of them assaulted Tarsem with an iron rod. They snatched the purse of Tarsem Lal, which contained Rs 250, apart from a mobile phone and a pair of earrings from his wife.

Meanwhile, three youths --- Dinesh Kumar, Pawan Kumar and Paramjit Singh --- who were also on a motorcycle, came to their rescue. But the robbers also assaulted them too with the iron rods and snatched their two mobile phones and fled.

Meanwhile two motorcycle-borne unidentified youths snatched a bag containing Rs 60,000 from Bakhshish Singh of Naushera Pattan village this afternoon.

The police today registered a case under sections 382 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

NRI hubby throws wife out of house, booked

Amritsar, June 11
The police has booked eight persons, including an NRI husband and in-laws for demanding dowry and throwing out the wife out of the house in Holland.

Those booked include Balwinder Singh (husband), his father Bakhshish Singh and mother Inderjit Kaur, all residents of Holland in this regard. The police has registered a case against Harjinder Singh and his wife Kulwant Kaur of Jalandhar, Gurmej Singh and his wife Parminder Kaur and Amarjit Kaur of Nakodar in this regard.

Randhir Singh, father of the victim, Rajinder Kaur, and a resident of Wadala village in his complaint with the police alleged that his daughter was married to accused Balwinder in December 2005 and they given dowry as per their limits. He alleged that the accused later on started demanding Rs 10 lakh on pretext of purchasing a house in Holland.

He said as they were unable to pay the dowry, the accused beat his daughter and threw her out of their house in that country. He alleged the accused even did not allowed her to take the gold jewelry weighing 250 grams worth Rs 3.75 lakh. — TNS

Beas tragedy: Boy’s body found

Hoshiarpur, June 11
The body of Vikrant, a student of Star Public High School, was found floating in the Beas between Tooran village and Taggar Khurd in the morning today. The boy drowned along with three others students of Star Public High School, who had gone there on a trip.

According to the police sources, some passersby noticed the body of the boy floating in the Beas at about 7:50 am.

Later, his body was handed over to his parents after the postmortem at the civil hospital, Mukerian.

Later, his family cremated his body in the cremation ground, Mukerian. A large number people of the area, including Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, Arunesh Shakar attended the funeral. Meanwhile, Megh Raj, the newly appointed Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, who took the charge today, visited the houses of tragedy victims to console their families.

He also gave cheques of Rs 1 lakh each, an ex-gratia grant announced by the Chief Minister, Punjab, to the families of deceased.

Five booked for murder

Amritsar, June 11
The Chheharta police has booked five persons for killing Tarsem Singh of Mulla Behram village here today.

The accused were identified as Prem Singh, his two sons Balwinder Singh and Bachitar Singh, wife Gurmeet Kaur and relative Hardyal Singh.

The police said the deceased’s son Shiv Raj allegedly used to bother their daughter by making missed phone calls. They asked Tarsem and Shiv Raj, and had an altercation with them at which Prem Singh attacked Tarsem with some blunt weapon on his head. — TNS
