Two inter-state smugglers nabbed; drugs, arms recovered

The local police here achieved a major breakthrough in its drive against narcotics’ smuggling as it nabbed two inter-state drug smugglers in an encounter near Jasso Mazara village and Chak Mander on the Nawanshahr-Jalandhar highway on Sunday afternoon.

Nawanshahr, June 12“ With a view to ensuring speedy redress of the grievances of the serving and retired personnel of armed forces, a special counter for submitting complaints would be set up and their problems heard along with the NRIs during a monthly meeting being held at the district level,” said Deputy Commissioner Gurkirat Kirpal Singh.

Dr M.S. Gill, Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, said he would take up the matter of setting up a visa center at Amritsar to facilitate the visit of the hundreds of devotees who wanted to pay obeisance at holy shrines situated in Pakistan.

The Union Minister said he would also be taking up the issue of setting up of the Kartarpur Sahib corridor with the concerned ministry so that Sikh devotees could visit the dera associated with the first Sikh master, Guru Nanak Dev.

Dr Gill was in the city to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple after taking over as Union Minister. Incidentally, today was also his birthday and the minister paid obeisance at the Akal Takht.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) honoured him with siropa (robe of honour) and a model of the Golden Temple. The minister also visited the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial and the Durgiana Temple.

The minister, along with Deputy Commissioner and other Congress party leaders, received flak for not removing their shoes during the ardas held for the inauguration of laying of synthetic Astroturf at the Guru Nanak Dev University complex.

However, Amardeep Singh Cheema, vice-president, Nehru Yuva Kendra, said there have been major lapses on the part of the organisers as they had not informed them about the minute to minute programme. He said not even a senior official had come to the airport to receive the minister.

Among those present on the occasion were MM Cheema, member AICC, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, MLA and Tript Bajwa, Suwinder Singh Kathunangal, Harpartap Ajnala, all former MLAs.

Two inter-state smugglers nabbed; drugs, arms recovered

Nawanshahr, June 14
The local police here achieved a major breakthrough in its drive against narcotics’ smuggling as it nabbed two inter-state drug smugglers in an encounter near Jasso Mazara village and Chak Mander on the Nawanshahr-Jalandhar highway on Sunday afternoon.

The police nabbed Rajpreet Singh and Sher Singh alias Shera both residents of Abohar and seized 11 kg opium, one kg poppy husk, a .32 bore Czechoslovakia-made pistol and 7 cartridges, including two live ones, from their possession.

Two head constables Narinder Singh and Kewal Krishan and one of the accused, Rajpreet Singh, were injured in the encounter between the police and drug-smugglers.

Rajpreet Singh has been admitted to the Guru Nanak Mission Hospital, Dhahan Kaleran, situated on the Nawanshahr- Jalandhar highway.

Giving details, SP (D) Kuldip Singh told mediapersons that on a tip off he got the information that Rajpreet Singh and Sher Singh, who had been involved in smuggling, were coming in a white coloured Ascent car (HR-29-N-9894) to Nawanshahr from Phagwara, a naka was immediately laid near Mahalon village on the Nawanshahr-Jalandhar main road.

When the police party intercepted the said car, the car occupants fired five rounds on the police party and turned the car back and tried to flee but after a struggle of a couple of hours, the police succeeded in overpowering the accused.

The police has registered cases against the accused under various sections of the NDPS Act, Arms Act and IPC and has started further investigation into the case.

The police had also arrested two inter-state drug smugglers and seized 10 kg opium from them, a few days ago.

Confectionery owner commits suicide

Hoshiarpur, June 14
Following the recovery of banned drugs in a confectionery shop on the Phagwara road, Mahilpur town, the owner, Sarabjit Singh committed suicide by consuming poison on Friday.

A police party, on a tip-off, today raided the confectionery shop of Sarabjit Singh and seized 240 Rexcof, 80 Corex syrup bottles, 1,650 Parvon, 287 Proxyvon and 288 Spasmo Proxyvon capsules. When the police party was further searching his shop, Sarabjit Singh allegedly consumed some poison and started vomiting.

He was immediately taken to Community Health Centre, Mahilpur, from where he was referred to Civil Hospital, Hoshiarpur, where he breathed his last. — OC

Under-repair crossing gives commuters a tough time

Residents of the Rail Vihar Colony, Karol Bagh and other adjoining localities faced a lot of inconvenience as the unmanned railway crossing near Indian Oil depot adjoining Suchi Pind railway station was temporarily closed on Sunday evening due to some routine repair work.

A resident of Karol Bagh locality, Roop Rani Kalia, said she was going to her residence at about 8 pm from Bhagat Singh Colony when she found the railway crossing closed. She said the rail authorities should have provided at least some prior information to people about the repair work through the media to avoid inconvenience.

The repair work was still on till the filing of this report.

According to some residents, the line was also closed on Saturday evening but normal traffic resumed in the morning only for the line to be closed again on Sunday evening.

Special counter to help defence personnel

Nawanshahr, June 12“ With a view to ensuring speedy redress of the grievances of the serving and retired personnel of armed forces, a special counter for submitting complaints would be set up and their problems heard along with the NRIs during a monthly meeting being held at the district level,” said Deputy Commissioner Gurkirat Kirpal Singh.

While presiding over a meeting of the District Sainik Board, Kirpal Singh said a separate counter would ensure proper monitoring of the cases pertaining to the serving or retired armed forces personnel. 

The DC distributed cheques of Rs 95,000 among 19 beneficiaries belonging to ex-servicemen and their dependents and a tricycle was given to Gurdev Singh of Surapur village. So far, Rs 21,93,826 had been distributed among ex-servicemen under various schemes. — OC

Website on Malta boat tragedy

Former Secretary, Punjab School Education Board, Tara Singh inaugurated the website of the Malta Boat Tragedy Probe Mission (MBTPM) by switching on a button during a function here on Friday.

It may be recalled that the Malta boat tragedy took place on December 25, 1996, in the Malta Sicily channel in which 300 young men, including 170 Indians, lost their lives.

The Malta Boat Tragedy Probe Mission had filed suits against the culprits in various courts. Now anyone can collect information about the tragedy from www.maltatragedymission.org from anywhere in the world. The chairman of the MBTPM, Balwant Singh Khera, said the main accused of the tragedy in Italy had been sentenced to 30 year of imprisonment by the courts there and in India the court would pronounce sentence to the 27 accused of the tragedy on June 26 in Delhi. — OC
