‘Cong impedes grant utilisation’
Nawanshahr, June 17
Accusing Municipal Council President Rajinder Chopra of adopting a dilly-dallying approach towards the utilisation of a development grant of Rs 2 crore given by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in February, SAD-BJP councillors Jinderjit Kaur, MC Vice-President, Param Singh Khalsa, Dr Shiv Kumar Tejpal and Kulwinder Kaur, at a press meeting here today demanded appointment of an administrator in the Municipal Council to ensure utilisation of development grants in public interest.

Body of another drowned girl found

The body of Surekha, daughter of Madan Lal of Gallowal, which was washed away along with Mamta, daughter of Parkash Chand of the same village, on June 14 evening in the Beas, near Dasuya, was found floating near Sri Hargobindpur today.

3 booked in rape case

The Majitha Road police has booked three persons, including two women, in a rape case. The medical reports have confirmed the rape after which the police registered a case under sections 363, 366 and 376 of the IPC.

A student of Government Polytechnic College, Kahnuwan Road, fell down from the roof of the college hostel and died on the spot.

Four dead as car rams into gathering at ‘chhabeel’

Phagwara, June 17
In a tragic incident, four persons were killed and nearly 10 were wounded when a car rammed into several persons taking “chhabeel” organised in view of the death anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev at Mauli village, near here, on the Jalandhar-New Delhi National Highway-1 this afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, the mishap took place when Sumiter Singh of Kanjli in Kapurthala district lost control over his car when he was returning to his residence from Ludhiana.

First the car knocked down a cyclist and then hit several persons taking “chhabeel”.

The deceased have been identified as Mewa Ram, Sipahi Rai, Mohinder Pal and Darshan Singh. Three of them died on the spot whereas Mohinder Pal succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital in Ludhiana.

Darshan Singh was a resident of Mauli village and was one of the organisers of the “chhabeel”, whereas the other three persons were workers at a nearby private factory and were taking sweetened water at the time of the mishap.

Some of the injured have been identified as Piara Singh of Mauli village, Sarabjeet of Patti Khalsa village, near Goraya, Premier factory worker Sukhwinder Singh, Basant Tiwari of Chachoki village, Harjinder Singh and his wife Jasbir Kaur of Shekhurpur village in Phillaur and Jatinder Singh of Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district.

Seriously injured Piara Singh and Sarabjeet have been referred to a Ludhiana hospital whereas most of the other wounded persons were being treated at the Phagwara Civil Hospital.

Car owner Sumiter Singh was caught and an FIR under section 304-A of the IPC was registered against him.

Meanwhile, Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary said the state government would bear all the expenditure on the treatment of the injured persons. Further, the state government has been urged to provide ex-gratia payment to the deceased, 
he added.

Accusing Municipal Council President Rajinder Chopra of adopting a dilly-dallying approach towards the utilisation of a development grant of Rs 2 crore given by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in February, SAD-BJP councillors Jinderjit Kaur, MC Vice-President, Param Singh Khalsa, Dr Shiv Kumar Tejpal and Kulwinder Kaur, at a press meeting here today demanded appointment of an administrator in the Municipal Council to ensure utilisation of development grants in public interest.

The SAD-BJP councillors said the internal bickering in the Congress had been playing havoc with the basic civic amenities in the town.

The SAD-BJP councillors said now the Lok Sabha elections were over and the imposition of section 171 of the Municipal Act had been lifted, even now the MC chief had been creating hindrances in the utilisation of the development grant.

“The basic civic amenities like roads, street lights, drinking water, sewerage and sanitation are in a deplorable situation and the residents have been awaiting the start of the development works, but the Congress has been playing politics at the cost of public interest,” said the SAD-BJP councillors. They warned of a dharna if an administrator is not appointed soon.

Body of another drowned girl found

Hoshiarpur, June 17
The body of Surekha, daughter of Madan Lal of Gallowal, which was washed away along with Mamta, daughter of Parkash Chand of the same village, on June 14 evening in the Beas, near Dasuya, was found floating near Sri Hargobindpur today.

Deputy Commissioner Megh Raj said on the request of the parents, the body was handed over to them without conducting its post-mortem examination. She was cremated at her 
village this afternoon.

The body of Mamta is yet to be recovered. It may be recalled that three girls Surekha and Mamta, both of Gallowal village, and another Mamta, daughter of Balwinder Singh of Ram Nangal, were washed away in the current of the Beas when they along with some other girls went to bathe in it. — OC

The Majitha Road police has booked three persons, including two women, in a rape case. The medical reports have confirmed the rape after which the police registered a case under sections 363, 366 and 376 of the IPC.

The mother of the victim girl in her complaint lodged with the police alleged that the accused, Sunil Kumar, Darshna Kumar and Manju Sareen, all residents of Bhawani Nagar and neighbour of the girl, lured the girl into marriage.

Police officials said the accused were absconding after the incident.

Seizes 1.5 kg heroin

With the arrest of Baj Singh, alias Baja, a key accomplice of notorious Indo-Pak smuggler Munir Ahmad, presently lodged in Amritsar Central Jail, the Special Narcotics Cell (SNC), Punjab, has been able to bust the gang operating in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir with overseas links.

Baj, a resident of Gumanpura locality, was arrested along with Sarabjit Singh of Kapurthala, another accomplice of Munir, and Kulwant Singh of Jalandhar here today by the SNC and seized 1.5 kg of heroin worth Rs 7.50 crore from them.

According to information, jawans of the SNC, acting on a tip-off, caught the accused from the New Amritsar area where they were waiting for a party to deliver the consignment of heroin on their motorcycle and recovered the contraband. A case under sections 21, 25, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered.

SNC sources said Baj Singh, who earlier used to smuggle smack, came in contact with Munir Ahmad in Amritsar Central Jail after which he jumped into the smuggling of heroin. The sources revealed that Munir was still operating from jail through a mobile phone.

As many as 20 cases of smack peddling had been registered against Baj and he had become an headache for various security and intelligence agencies. Sarabjit Singh, alias Saba, had been caught by the jail authorities while sneaking a mobile phone sim to Munir in November last year and was recently bailed out.

Student falls from hostel roof, dies

Batala, June 17
A student of Government Polytechnic College, Kahnuwan Road, fell down from the roof of the college hostel and died on the spot.

Ankit Gularia, a resident of Chintpurni, was doing diploma in civil engineering at Government Polytechnic College. He went on to the roof of the college hostel and fell down.After this, Ankit’s classmate informed Prof Balwinder Singh who sent Ankit to the Civil Hospital where doctors declared him dead. — OC
