13-yr-old boy, grandfather brutally murdered

Hoshiarpur, June 21
A teenaged boy and his grandfather were brutally murdered at Bassi Shah Mohmad village here last night.

According to the police, Teja Singh (70) and his grandson Rajwinder Singh (13), son of Sukhdev Singh, were found murdered at the tubewell in their fields this morning.

Sadhu Singh, son of deceased Teja Singh, went to the fields this morning to deliver tea and found their bodies, with multiple injuries from sharp-edged weapons, lying on a cot in a pool of blood.

Teja Singh, along with his grandson Rajwinder Singh, was irrigating his fields last evening. After irrigating, both stayed in the tubewell room and slept there.

Sources said there was old enmity between deceased Teja Singh’s family and Manjit Kaur, who hails from the same village and is presently residing at Megowal village.

She is suspected to be behind the murder of the boy and his grandfather. The Sadar police has registered a case under sections 302 and 120 B of the IPC against Manjit Kaur and some unknown persons.

Undertrial escapes

An undertrial inmate of a juvenile home, Ram Colony Camp, Naveen Kumar (15), son of Kailash Mahanto of PS Mehandani (Bihar), who had been languishing here, escaped last night when an employee Dharma Chand, of Bajwara, was serving food to the inmates.

When the staff came to know about his escape, they searched Naveen in the vicinity but could not locate him.

According to police sources, Naveen was an under trial in a murder case at Garhshankar in 2007.

The Sadar police has registered an FIR under section 224 of the IPC against Naveen and is actively searching him.

Villagers demand addition of section 302 in FIR

Hoshiarpur, June 21
Inhabitants of the Umarpur village, led by the president of SAD (B), Mukerian, Gajjan Singh and Bhai Amrik Singh of Latifpur village, yesterday, blocked traffic on the Jalandhar-Patahnkot road for more than an hour protesting against the inability of the police to arrest four accused persons in an assault case.

Placing the body of deceased Darshan Singh (65), of Umarpur village in front of the Civil Hospital, Mukerian, 55 km from here, they staged a dharna on the national highway to pressurise the police to add section 302 in the FIR registered under sections 323, 325, 148 and 149 of the IPC on June 13, 2009 in Mukerian police station against Daljit Singh, Baljit Singh, Manga, and Jodha, all of the same village.

According to police sources, a clash took place between the nephew of Darshan Singh and the aforesaid four accused at a fair in the village on June 11, 2009.

While rescuing his nephew, Darshan Singh received some injuries and fractured his arm. He was shifted to the Civil Hospital, Mukerian, but was later referred to Civil Hospital, Dasuya.

Yesterday, Darshan Singh was discharged from the Civil Hospital, Dasuya and died in the morning today. According to the civil surgeon, Darshan probably died due to heart failure.

The police failed to arrest the above said accused which infuriated the villagers. The inhabitants took the body of Darshan Singh, placed it in front of the Civil Hospital Mukerian, blocked traffic and staged a dharna there.

They demanded the immediate arrest of all the accused and the addition of section 302 of the IPC in the above said case.

Later, DSP Mukerian intervened in the matter and on his assurance (that section 302 would be added in the FIR and the accused would be arrested soon), they lifted the blockade and dharna and traffic resumed.

Protest against construction

Holding banners and raising slogans against the Municipal Corporation, the protesters objected to adding of more storey in front of the yet to be opened gate of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama on M.M Malviya road.

Although the Panorama has its gate inside the Ram Bagh gardens but the corporation has decided to open its another gate from Malviya road.

The protesters argued that construction of a multi-storey building opposite to it would be a violation of the Archaeological Act as well.

Leaders of the protesters, Rakesh Gill, said Mayor Shwet Malik must take stern view of this violation. He said once the construction was completed it would stop the view of the panorama.

Indecent Act
Amorous couple caught in medical college canteen

An amorous couple was caught in the canteen of Government Medical College here. The canteen was bolted from outside.

The Majitha road police raided the canteen after receiving the information and subsequently nabbed the couple.

However, the girl, who is reportedly to be a student of nursing in the medical college complex, was released later while her lover and servant of the canteen were booked under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code.

Confirming this, Tarsem Lal, SHO of Majitha Road police station, said the two accused identified as Gurpreet Singh and Ajay Kumar, were released on bail after following the required procedure.

The lover of the girl, Gurpreet Singh, was an outsider while Ajay was working as helping hand to the canteen contractor, he said.

He said during investigation it has come to light that the Ajay used to take money from students for using a room of the canteen for this purpose.

College principal Dr Jagdish Gargi said that the incident had taken place about a couple of days back.

When asked about taking any action against the canteen owner, he said he had not received any written complaint in this regard.

KSC calls meet to take up case of tillers

The Kisan Sangharsh Committee (KSC) has called a meeting to chalk out the next plan of action to take up the case of a family of tillers, for a disputed land at Vallah, on June 24.

The Guru Ramdas Charitable Hospital Trust, run by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), claimed its ownership on the land.

A leader of the KSC, Harjit Singh Jhitta, said as per the revenue record, the girdawari of the land was named after the tillers.

Karnail Singh and Resham Singh, sons of Sucha Singh, said their family had been cultivating 78 kanal land of Dharamshala Bhai Jawand Singh for the past 55 years.

Swine Flu
12 students discharged, 2 still in hospital

Jalandhar, June 21
After getting treatment for almost a week in the local Civil Hospital, 12 students of a reputed school, who were suffering from swine flu, have been sent to their respective homes in the past two days.

Two students, who were tested positive for the virus, are still being treated in the isolation ward created in the trauma centre of the hospital.

The discharged patients have been advised to maintain distance from members of their families and visitors for the next one week in their houses.

Civil Surgeon Dr S.S. Walia informed that six students, who were undergoing treatment for swine flue, were discharged on Saturday while six on Sunday.

Two students, who were tested positive for the virus, were still in hospital and under the round-the-clock observation of the doctors.

Dr Walia claimed that the department had also identified 297 suspected patients who had come in contact with the flu patients in one way or another. The health of the suspects was being monitored in their respective places, he added.

Serial thief in police net

The Maqsudan police nabbed Paramjit Singh, a resident of Khojwal village, in Kapurthala district and recovered vehicles, cash and some valuables from his possession today. He was wanted in 21 cases of theft.

SHO Harjinder Singh said Paramjit was nabbed by a police party on a tip-off on the Jalandhar-Kapurthala road near Wariana village.

During questioning, he admitted to have been involved in a number of theft cases
in the region.

The police also recovered a motorcycle, a Maruti Van, five mobiles and jewellery worth Rs 50,000 from him.

The suspect was today produced before a local court from where he was granted one day remand.

Raid on two sports shops

The police conducted raids on two shops for allegedly making duplicate material of two companies Nivia and Posco.

Special branch DSP Navjot Singh Mahal said after raids and took Rajiv Dhingra of Hare Krishana Traders, Basti Nau and Billa of Aims Football into its custody. Later, they handed over the duo to the police division number five.

However, when the news of the raids spread, a representative of Khel Udyog Sangh, Ravindra Dhir, along with its co-convener Parveen Anand reached the police division.

Dhir said he asked the representatives of companies to first issue a circular among the sports manufacturers and shopkeepers to stop dealing in duplicate material.

Later, both the parties reached a compromise following which Dhingra and Billa were allowed to go.

Cong launches ‘Aam Aadmi Ka Sipahi’ programme

The rural unit of the District Youth Congress launched the ‘Aam Aadmi Ka Sipahi’ programme on the eve of the birthday celebrations of Rahul Gandhi here on Friday.

Former Minister Chaudhry Santokh Singh interacted with workers and urged them to work for highlighting the policies and programmes of the party among the masses.

DYC chief Vikramjit Singh said the programme has been started by the IYC on the directions of Gandhi so that the masses benefited from scores of prestigious people friendly programmes of the UPA government.

Presently, their workers and supporters were being denied such benefits by the
SAD-BJP regime.

Their rations cards were not being made nor were they being extended widow and old age pensions.

Similarly, they are not being employed under the NREGA scheme that ensures 100 days of work for all, he pointed out.
