DUSU takes up cudgels
for SCs
New Delhi, June 4 The office-bearers, including president Nupur Sharma, secretary Amit Choudhary and joint secretary Ashish Gahlot met the university administration asking them to arrange for drinking water for the students, who are coming from across the length of the city to fill in forms. “Before the admission season started, we from DUSU pleaded to allow our help desks to provide water to the students inside the centres, but the university administration refused to give permission to put up any such desk,” said Nupur, president, DUSU. She added, “We went to the DSW in this regard. There were already around 50 students present outside his office at that time. When the joint dean refused to take the matter seriously and misbehaved with us, some of the students ransacked his office.” Another set of students met the DSW today to represent their concern about the discrimination faced by SC-ST students in admissions. Members of Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) highlighted the problems of many SC-ST students, who appeared in the state board examinations and open boards, whose results were either awaited or marksheets not released. “To avail a registration form under the SC-ST category, one has to show the class XII marksheet and caste certificate. The students waiting for their results or marksheets cannot apply for the university then,” said Sujit Kumar from KYS. Under the provision prescribed by the dean’s office, the candidate under such a condition has to get their marksheet verified from the state government’s resident commissioner. |
Goods worth crores gutted
in Gurgaon godown
Gurgaon, June 4 More than 100 fire officials and 18 fire engines from the district fire department, Air Force station, Maruti and Hero Honda were trying to douse the flames at the time of filing the report. The fire was first noticed at the ladies garments section of the godown around 1.30 pm. The manager of the godown, Kamal Kishore, said the employees and neighbours tried their best to extinguish the fire, but it went out of control and spread to the kids wear section as well. District fire officer Hanuman Sihag said due to the intense heat generated by the fire, the building structure had either collapsed or become fragile, making the entry all the more difficult. “The godown was packed with garments and packaging material like plastic and cardboard, which enhanced the fire,” he maintained. The fire was possibly caused due to a short circuit and the losses are estimated to run into crores of rupees. The facility used to serve as the packaging unit from where garments were dispatched to Vishal’s outlets in Delhi, Gurgaon and Hisar. |
Woman delivers in rickshaw, hospital staff look on
Noida, June 4 But the shocking part of the story was that though the nurses and hospital staff were looking on, none of them bothered to lend a helping hand as if it was not their duty. As no stretcher was available, the riksha had to be taken right up to the labour room to ferry the woman who was in extreme pain. When Raj Kumar informed the reception, the nurse on duty, instead of being helpful, sarcastically said, “If you were in such a hurry why did you not take her to some other hospital?” After the primary treatment, the woman was again left to writhe in pain for another one hour or so. However hospital’s chief medical superintendent Dr Raj Rani said the incident was not in her knowledge, otherwise the woman would have got immediate treatment. It is learnt that the state governemnt has increased the expenditure on every pregnant woman from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,400 and the Noida Authority has been entrusted by the state government to convert the Noida district hospital into a multi-disciplined modern hospital at a cost of Rs 400 crore. But it seems the situation would not change till there is a change in the mindset of the medical staff. |
Stephen’s backs its principal
New Delhi, June 4 The college authorities said some of the media reports published recently about the appointment of Thampu were misleading and inaccurate. The media reports based on an RTI stated that the university had not approved Thampu's appointment yet and that in order to be the principal of any college, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET). Media advisor of St. Stephen's Nandita Narain clarified today that infact the Delhi University itself fixed Thampu's salary on January 21 this year through a letter signed by Deepak Vats, deputy registrar (colleges). "The university cannot fix the salary of anyone unless the appointment is approved. Further, Thampu has been appointed by the university to the University Court in his capacity as the principal of St. Stephen's College," said Narain. Making clear that passing NET was not compulsory to be a college principal, she said, "As per Ordinance XXIV of Delhi University, NET is not a requirement for appointment as principal, reader or professor. Nor is NET a required qualification according to the UGC. The UGC has also explicitly confirmed this in a letter to Thampu dated May 26, 2008." A committee was constituted to ascertain the validity of Thampu's Ph.D. degree granted to him by the Allahabad Agriculture Institute. The college maintained that the committee concluded that the Allahabad Agricultural Institute was entitled to award Ph.D. degrees in theology . The college administration said, in the wake of the media reports, the UGC had yesterday clarified that NET and M.Phil. were not prescribed as requirements for the post of principal. NET is one of the requirements for the post of lecturer (now assistant professor) and not for the post of principal." Narain said the media report was so riddled with innuendos and inaccuracies that it was possible that there might be deliberate mischief catering to vested interests in the background. |
Every MCD ward to have
toilet for women
New Delhi, June 4 It has already ordered that one such toilet be built in every ward. “We have ordered the director-in-chief of the department concerned to initiate the project. But before that a survey would be conducted to ensure proper facilities like water supply and maintaining a minimum level of hygiene,” said Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain. The Mayor has recently written to all councillors to identify land for the construction of women toilets in their respective wards. “The response has been overwhelming as they all have managed to find pieces of land ,” he said. He said that the project will take one or two months after all the paper work is done. Although the amount of money to be spent is not yet decided, according to the officials, the construction of one toilet complex costs around Rs 10 lakh. “The toilet complexes would be built on public private partnership basis,” he said. As of now, no company has approached for taking up the project. According to the corporation, there are 3,192 public conveniences in the national capital out of which only 134 are meant for women, and even these are not well maintained. |
