DU has 5% sports quota
Akhila Singh
Tribune News Service

Inter-zonal level must

Candidates applying under the quota must at least have secured positions at the inter-zonal level. The level of competition in case of Sainik School, Kendriya Vidyalaya and Public School may be considered on a par with the position at the inter-zonal level by the colleges.

New Delhi, June 3
Gone are the days when sports quota students were not considered of worth in educational institutes. The “Team Members”, as they are called in Delhi University (DU), are amongst the most popular boys and girls on the campus.

DU offers five per cent seats, separately both in honours and BA programme courses (except engineering and courses that require test for admission), for admission on the basis of sports.

The sports quota admissions are conducted and finalised by each college on the recommendations of a committee consisting of the principal, director of physical education and senior sports players of the college. These committees are independently constituted by the colleges.

According to the senior sports players of the university, candidates applying under the sports quota must visit the colleges. “It always makes a difference when you go and meet the senior sports players in colleges. These players generally hang out in the colleges around the admission time and their say counts,” said Vishal Sangwan, who was a member of the basketball team at St. Stephen’s.

Though the university has provided option for sports quota students in the common Optical Magnetic Reader (OMR) form, students must go to individual colleges to apply under the category. The admission dates for students applying under the sports quota are notified by the colleges on their notice boards.

“Though the sports quota students get some relaxation in the cut offs, the colleges generally maintain their academic profiles while choosing the candidates under this category as well,” said Digvijay Singh, former captain of the St. Stephen’s basketball team.

Instead of blindly trusting the sports record of the candidates on the basis of the certificates submitted by them, colleges conduct trials for these students.

“The seniors from the schools try to pull down their juniors. However, if the candidate is good then the team would obviously want him. The competition between the colleges is enormous and we always need good players to secure positions,” said Anubhav Jha, an outgoing member of SRCC’s soccer team.

It is generally observed that students from certain boarding schools have an upper hand while appearing for the trials. Aspirants coming from schools like Mayo College in Ajmer, Lawrance School in Sanawar, Doon School in Dehradun and Rai Sports School, dominate the sport scene in DU.

Some of the prominent sports teams at DU are: basketball and soccer teams of St. Stephens, basketball team of Hindu College, soccer and basketball teams of SRCC, Kirorimal College’s cricket team, basketball team of Jesus and Mary and athletic team of Miranda House.

To apply under the quota, students need duly verified sports certificates from the head of the institution last attended and the issuing authority. All applications, along with sports certificates, could also be sent to conveners of University Sports Admission Committee for scrutiny.

“This year, DU is going be very conscious about the admissions under the sports quota as a lot of questions were raised last year when many fake certificates were received from the sports quota candidates,” said a team member from Hindu College.

Along with the certificates, students are required to attach their photograph attested by the respective issuing authority and head of the institution last attended.

DU has very strict guidelines against the use of fake or forged sports certificates. Any student found submitting fake certificate would be debarred from taking admission in any course in any college for three years.

While selecting students under the sports quota, DU gives preference to the students playing sports in which the university holds inter-college and inter-university competitions.

English (Hons) the rage
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 3
English (Hons) is one of the most popular courses in this admission season at Delhi University. Barely three days have passed and the varsity has already sold 2,700 CATE (Common Aptitude Test for English) forms on campus. According to an estimate, the varsity expects to sell over 5,000 forms this season.

Professor Satpati of the English department at Delhi University, says, “The rush for CATE forms has surpassed our wildest imagination. We have already sold 2,700 forms within three days and students have started submitting forms also. Today itself there were 250 form submissions and we expect the rush to increase after June 8. The form sale may reach up to 5,000 by June 15.”

Only 12 colleges are party to CATE and many colleges are not participating.

CATE primarily tests linguistic ability. The test is a combination of multiple choice questions that are targeted to bring out the candidates’ aptitude and there is also a long question-answer component. The test is scheduled for June 17.

Nandini Aggarwal, a student who has just collected a CATE form, says, “I am applying for the English honours course and the test is a good option for me. For one thing if I score well this may get me entry into a college of my choice. Of course, I am not taking chances and am applying at other colleges as well where CATE does not apply. The idea is to get the course of my choice come what may.”

Another student standing nearby, Kabir Dhillon says, “I am applying for English honours. This course is my first choice and a major factor behind this decision is that I will opt for journalism later.”

A major factor behind the popularity of English honours is that the course can result in netting jobs in journalism, publishing, advertising, etc.

Satpati informs that a major reason behind the popularity of the course is a popular misconception also.

“Students feel they will speak better English and get many job opportunities. However, the course is not about spoken English, but has a major literary focus and also examines interdisciplinary elements which are linked to the subject. Literature cannot be studied divorced from the socio-cultural and literary milieu,” says Satpati.

Metro commuters counselled on discipline
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 3
Volunteers of the Metro Citizens' Forum today went on a special drive to instill better behaviour and discipline among the fellow commuters inside the Metro trains and stations.

About 50 volunteers divided themselves into two groups and travelled on the Dwarka Sector 9 to Yamuna Bank and Dilshad Garden to Rithala routes.

"The Metro Citizens' Forum volunteers helped many women and senior citizens get seats and counseled the commuters regarding vacating seats reserved for women, senior citizens and the physically challenged. They also requested the commuters not to play loud music inside the trains and helped them to queue up at the busy Rajiv Chowk Metro station apart from asking them to keep the metro premises clean," said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson, Delhi Metro.

The forum is an attempt by Delhi Metro to seek the cooperation of the masses in instilling better behaviour, etiquettes and discipline among the Metro commuters.

On an average, Delhi Metro is carrying about 8 lakh commuters everyday. "In the wake of increasing ridership and the scheduled opening of many new corridors in the coming year, such cooperation from the commuters has become very important," he said.

At present, the number of volunteers has crossed 250. Another 300 applications from interested commuters are under processing.

1984 riots: Court rejects Sikh body’s plea

New Delhi, June 3
A city court on Wednesday dismissed the plea of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) to make a representation on behalf of victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots allegedly involving former union minister Jagdish Tytler.

The court, however, allowed Lakhwinder Kaur, wife of Badal Singh who was killed in the riots, to take part in the proceedings and represent herself in the case.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Rakesh Pandit disposed of the application filed by the DSGMC and the November ‘84 Carnage Justice Committee, seeking to be heard before the court decides on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) probe report in which Tytler has been given a clean chit.

“It is a criminal matter involving the death of three persons on account of riots. Now the applicants represent witnesses who have already deposed. It is argued by them that they also represent the general public who feel affected by the riots. I think the arguments are not tenable as the scope of the case is limited to the cause of death and who caused the death of three persons. The scope cannot be extended beyond that,” the court said.

The court also turned down the plea of Kaur, who had prayed that the CBI’s closure report be provided to her, saying there is no provision in the Criminal Procedure Code to that effect and posted the matter for August 1.

Rebecca M. John, appearing for Lakhwinder Kaur, had contended before the court: “The injured or aggrieved parties do have a right to be heard. The investigating agency is bound to give notice to such parties and if they fail to do so, the court is bound to hear us as settled by the Supreme Court.”

The CBI had on April 9 filed a closure report giving a clean chit to Tytler, who is accused of having incited mobs to attack Sikhs in the aftermath of the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi.

The CBI clean chit to Tytler triggered protests, forcing the Congress to drop him as a Lok Sabha candidate. — IANS

Noida Gangrape: Key accused is minor, rules court
Our Correspondent

Noida, June 3
The case of the gangrape of an MBA student in Garhi Chokhandi village of Noida five month ago has taken an interesting twist.

Gollu Jatav, whom the Noida police had declared as the main accused and the brain behind the gangrape, has been declared a minor by the district court. Gollu has been remanded to the Delinquent Children’s Home in Meerut by the court. However, the Noida police is contesting the decision.

In its report to the court, the police had stressed that it was Gollu who had planned the crime. Had he not informed his friend Pushpinder Yadav on phone about the girl, the crime would not have taken place, the police stated.

It may be recalled that an MBA student was gangraped by 11 boys of Garhi Chowkhandi village following the break-down of her car near the village. The boys first held her male friend captive and then forced their way into the car and gangraped the girl.

The victim, her friend and parents had lodged a complaint in this regard at the Sector 39 police station. The police had hounded up all the 11 accused within a week.

Gollu Jatav, who was made the main accused by the police, was shown to be 18 years old. The police had charged all the accused under the Gangster Act. But the case took a new twist on May 11 when Gollu’s lawyer told the court that as per his school certificates, Gollu was a minor and that his age at the time of arrest was 17 year and 10 months and not 18 years, as stated by the police.

On the day of the incident, Gollu along with his friends was returning home after playing cricket in Pachota village in Bulandshahr. Gollu was the first to spot the victim and her male friend in the car near their village.

According to the police, it was Gollu who on seeing the girl and her friend in a compromising positon in their car had alerted his friend Pushpinder Yadav on the phone. After sometime, all the boys forced themselves into the car and gangraped the MBA student.

It’s curtains for vintage coffee house
Rashi
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 3
The favourite hub of the city coffee lovers, the Indian Coffee House at Mohan Singh Place, is to close down on June 10. This intellectual landmark has given the country nine prime ministers, two presidents and two vice-presidents.

Among the regular visitors of this 52-year-old coffee house, situated in the heart of the Capital, were Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Chandra Shekhar, I.K. Gujral and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, and Presidents V.V. Giri and K.R. Narayanan, besides former Defence Minister George Fernandes. It was also patronised by eminent artists, musicians and intellectuals.

The manager of the coffee house says that they are closing down after the heavy losses incurred due to tough competition with the other coffee houses.

However, a sad state of affairs at the Mohan Singh Place coffee house illustrates why it is doing badly. The heady aroma of coffee is stifled by the stench from toilets. The windowpanes are broken and the lift does not work. Moreover, the waiters have turned old and restless while their white dresses have turned pale yellow over the years.

Nonetheless, there are many old pals and even youngsters who find themselves attached with the ‘homely atmosphere of the place’.

A social worker, Karan Gupta says, “I come here not just for a cup of coffee, but for the rejuvenating gathering and intellectual discussions.”

To save the place from closing down, the Coffee Consumers’ Forum has addressed a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, appealing them to save the coffee house.

The memorandum has also demanded that the Indian Coffee Workers’ Cooperative Society that is currently running the coffee house should be dissolved and its management should be handed over to the government.

The forum claims that the Indian Coffee Workers’ Cooperative Society has decided to close down the coffee house after a secret deal which also led to the closure of other coffee houses located at Kamla Nagar, Bungalow Road and Malkaganj.

The forum has sought an inquiry into irregularities in the society. It has also asked the joint secretary in the agricultural ministry and the registrar of cooperative society to look into the issue.

Folk artistes objecting to eve-teasing beaten
Had performed at 10, Janpath

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 3
More than a dozen artistes of a Rajasthani folk group were beaten up when they objected to eve teasing of their women members last night in the Patel Nagar area of central Delhi.

According to information, the folk group had performed at 10 Janpath, the residence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and at the residences of many other political bigwigs of the Capital during Holi last year.

The incident took place around 10 pm yesterday in Kathputli Colony near Shadi Pur Depot in Patel Nagar.

As per reports, the artists of Rajasthani Artistes Committee under the leadership of Shravan Kumar were rehearsing in the night as they are to perform in Holland next month. It was this time when the self-proclaimed president of Katputli colony Daleep along with some men came there and started misbehaving with the women artists.

When Shravan and others objected, the group bashed them up with sticks and rods injuring Shravan, Mahavir, Rakesh, Mukesh, Ravi, Priya and others. They were admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

However, contrary to claims of eve teasing by Shravan's group, Daleep and his men said that the fight started after a child was pushed away by one of the artists.

The police too has denied the eve teasing theory and said that it was a minor incident. "There was no eve teasing of any kind as far as we know. The fight started after adults got involved in the fight of children. Both parties have alleged being attacked by the other and we have lodged cases against both the parties," said Joginder Singh, SHO, Patel Nagar police station.

No arrest has been made in the case so far.

MCD gives memo on Master Plan
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 3
The leaders of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), including Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain, leader of the House Subhash Arya and chairman Standing Committee Ram Kishan Singhal today met the union urban development minister Jaipal Reddy at Nirman Bhawan and presented a memorandum of demands.

They said that the Delhi Master Plan-2021 and the provisional recognition of unauthorized colonies have led to irregularities, causing haphazard growth of the city.

According to the leaders, the MCD is not able to sanction the building plans of unauthorised colonies, which have been provisionally recognized by the Delhi government.

"The fate of nearly 1,500 unauthorized colonies provisionally recognized hangs in the balance.

The millions of families living in these areas need to carry out construction due to growth in their families. This will lead to haphazard growth within these colonies. Moreover, citizens residing in these colonies apprehend that the government will take over vacant plots," said the Mayor.

"If the trend continues, the situation in these colonies will become unlivable. Therefore, the government must take appropriate steps to ensure sanctioning of building plans in these colonies," added the Mayor.

The memorandum submitted by the leaders, which included a series of demands, also stated that the central government's proposal of a minimum requirement of plot size of 800 sq mt for private schools looking for recognition, is unrealistic.

Prasant Singh, a resident of village Fatehpur, drowned in a pond at village Mandkol in the Ballabgarh area, about 25 km from here, this afternoon.

Prasant, a student of class X, had gone to take a bath in the village pond. He jumped in the pond, but did not come out. Other boys bathing in the pond at the time of the incident realised danger when Prasant did not reappear on the surface of the water for a long time.

The residents feel that Prasant probably dived into the section of the pond which has uneven bed surface. He may have got stuck in the slushy mud at the bed surface of the pond. The pond, otherwide, appears to be well maintained as it had pucca constructions around the banks.

It is a common site to see boys and residents of the area taking bath in the pond, especially during the summer season. The pond was created several decades ago.
