37 kids rescued from zari factory
New Delhi, May 28 Mostly hailing from Bihar or across the border, in Nepal, the children were found in a poor condition — a result of making the nimble fingers work endlessly and keeping them cooped up in a tiny room devoid of any fresh air or sunshine for days together. According to the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), the NGO which helped the police and the labour department in the rescue operation, most of the children were being trafficked to the Capital after their parents were lured with money and promises of a bright future for their children. Eleven-year-old Mohammad Jubair for instance said that the trafficker came to his father with Rs 500 and promised that if allowed to take his son to the city, not only will he earn double, but also lead a much better life. “I used to love going to school and was in Class III when I was brought to the city by this person. It has been two years now that I have been working here and all that he promised my father was a lie. We were made to work in a small and dingy room and my fingers ached every time I put a wrong stitch as the needle would pierce my skin,” Jubair said. “We were made to work from early morning to late at night and at times even the whole night. Now I just want to forget all that and go home. I also want to go to school again,” he added. Kailash Satyarthi of the BBA said: “What a paradox it is that on one hand India voted for a good government where the power of youth is much celebrated, but on the other hand there are children and youth who are trafficked for Rs 500 or 1,000 and sold at a lesser price than a goat in the capital of India!”. “People who wear flashy and heavy embroidered saree, lehanga and shervani in weddings, festivals and other auspicious occasions should keep in mind that these are the products of a child’s labour,” he added. The rescued children have been given release certificates under the Bonded Labour Act which entitles them to a rehabilitation package of Rs 20,000. — IANS |
Papers on low floor buses submitted
New Delhi, May 28 The Lokayukta, justice Manmohan Sarin, yesterday ordered the government to submit the relevant documents of low floor buses. Arguing the case, the standing counsel of the state government, Najmi Waziri said that the complainant was talking of semi-low floor buses while the Delhi government has purchased the low floor buses. Waziri argued that the low floor buses were purchased after global tendering and purchased from the lowest bidder. A bus manufacturing company of China had quoted Rs 70 lakh for one bus. But the order was given to the cheapest bidder that supplied the vehicle at Rs 41 lakh for one bus. As far as Chennai transport corporation is considered, it had given the rate of only chassis of the bus and that was also of semi low floor buses. Delhi has purchased low floor buses, he argued. When the Lokayukta asked the counsel of the complainant, he admitted that he filed the complaint on the basis of information given by the Chennai transport department through RTI. The second time he filed an RTI then it was said that Chennai had purchased semi low floor buses. The Lokayukta said, “You should have informed the court about the fact earlier.” |

MCD panel to probe land encroachments
New Delhi, May 28 Delhi mayor Kanwar Sain, has ordered a survey to be conducted in this regard to ascertain the number of slum properties in Delhi. “No survey of slum properties has been carried out for many years. Therefore, it is not easy to ascertain the number of slum dwellers and status of encroached public lands ,” said the mayor. Sain accepted the fact that the department is not performing up to the mark and requires improvement. “We have given directions to all the officers to become more people-friendly as the slum wing of MCD today is not performing as per the expectations of the public,” he said. Stephen’s 60% cut-off for Christians irks faculty
New Delhi, May 28 However, the faculty at St Stephen’s is not happy with this decision. Dr Pankaj Misra from the college says, “No teacher in the college is in favour of 60% cut-off which has been fixed for Christians. I think it is a compromise with the pride of St Stephen’s. It is a clear stepdown from the college’s long-established tradition of meritorious excellence. We’ve been fighting against this since last year but of no avail. All HoDs whether from the English or history department are against this.” On the other hand, Nandita Narain, tutor for admissions, says, “In order to fill up the Christian quota for students coming under the Church of North India, we have made a tentative 60% cut-off. Clearly, it is the high scorers who will figure. However, in keeping the cut-off low, we are merely playing safe.” |
