Haridwar, January 16
An elephant crushed a farmer to death and injured three others in Ajitpur, on the Lashkar road, here today. The farmers were in their sugarcane fields at the time of the incident. After the attack, the infuriated villagers clashed with police and forest staff.

Parkash (65), a resident of Katarpur, died on the spot with three others Sharan (38), Dharampal (38) and Kavita (38) were injured. They have been admitted to the district hospital and are stated to be out of danger.

The local people complained that the elephant was hiding in the fields since the night, but despite them informing the forest officials no action was taken. The irate villagers also roughed up forest range officer KP Verma. The situation became so tense that the police had to be called in.

Amar Jit Singh, SHO, Kankhal police station, said villagers on the periphery of the forest have been alerted and police along with forest guards are searching nearby areas. Villagers have also been advised to light a fire outside their houses and avoid venturing out after dark.

Meanwhile, the movement of elephants on the outskirts of Rajaji National Park and in residential colonies has increased. Last month, a woman was crushed to death while others were injured near the bypass road by a group of elephants.

Dr Ritesh Joshi, an elephant expert, attributed the aggressive behaviour of the pachyderms to the breeding season. “This forest is accessed by elephants by crossing the river coming from Shyampur range only, and so the tusker elephants may have remained in the area trying to cross yesterday evening,” said Joshi.

Dehradun, January 16
Kunwar Parnav Singh ‘Champion’, Congress MLA from Laksar assembly segment of Haridwar district, an arm-wrestler himself, showed his political ‘muscle’ by staging a demonstration of the ‘Gujjar’ community, here today.

Kunwar Parnav Singh, scion of the royal family of Landoura in Haridwar district, not only dared the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state government, but also put forward his claim for the Lok Sabha seat from Haridwar to his own Congress party.

Kunwar Parnav Singh and his supporters staged a protest against filing of a police case against him for allegedly firing in the air at a wrestling competition last week.

He along with his supporters held a rally at the Gandhi Park and then walked up to Clock Tower holding banners and raising slogans. The Congress MLA alleged that the Haridwar district administration had registered a false case against him at the behest of state education minister, BJP leader Madan Kaushik, who also hails from Haridwar, to debar him from contesting the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“I am not like the ruling BJP, but I use my muscle for the welfare of common people,” he said. He dared Uttarakhand Chief Minister Maj. Gen BC Khanduri (retd) to arrest him.

“We will make another Rajasthan in Dehradun if the state government dares to do it,” he said.

Kunwar Parnav Singh also sent a message from the state capital to his own Congress party about his claim on the Haridwar Lok Sabha seat.

Both the BJP as well as the Congress are finding it difficult to select a candidate for the Haridwar seat.

Since the seat has been recently dereserved, a large number of claimants have thrown their hat in the ring.

Cong fears ONGC shift & with it tax loss

Dehradun, January 16
The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) today claimed that management of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is covertly trying to shift its headquarters from Dehradun.

Addressing mediapersons, media incharge of the committee Suryakant Dhasmana said ONGC pays an annual amount of Rs 3,000 crore to the Uttarakhand government in the form of income tax and hence its shifting would be a setback to the state economy.

“The top brass of ONGC, including its chairman, board of directors and other senior officials are operating from Delhi and Noida. During the past three years, ONGC management has transferred three-dozen senior officers from Dehradun to other places. These posts are still vacant, which is sufficient to gauge that the ONGC management is by and by winding up its operations from Dehradun,” said Dhasmana, while adding that they had concrete information that transfer of around a dozen ONGC officers is on the cards.

Dhasmana said they would be taking up the matter with the Union petroleum minister Murli Deora. He also announced that the youth wing of the Congress would be launching an agitation to oppose the move. “Next week, youth Congress activists will be staging a demonstration at the ONGC headquarters in Dehradun,” he said. Dhasmana said since the matter is related to the economy of Uttarakhand all political outfits, cutting across party lines, should take up the matter together.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders have come out in support of ONGC officers whose services were terminated for leading the recent nationwide strike by oil sector PSUs. Congress MP from Tehri Vijay Bahuguna has shot-off a letter to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief Sonia Gandhi in this regard.

The letter, a copy of which is with The Tribune, reads, “Services of as many as 64 employees of ONGC had been terminated without any prior notice. Such hasty action by ONGC management has demoralised other employees, which may affect the performance of the company. It needs to be considered that office-bearers of their association were only representing the demands of all their colleagues and were not acting in any self interest.” Bahuguna has sought the intervention of Sonia Gandhi in the matter so that terminated employees are reinstated.

“He will very soon be meeting Murli Deora in this regard,” said Dhasmana, adding that Bahuguna had already spoken to Deora over the phone and the minister had assured to look into the matter.
