Saving the Ganga
Ecologist to resume fast today

Dehradun, January 13
Noted environmentalist Prof GD Agarwal has decided to resume his indefinite fast from January 14.

In June 13, 2008, he had started an indefinite fast on the banks of the Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi to demand a ban on hydroelectric projects between the Gangotri and Uttarkashi.

He has stated that no action had been taken by the government on the assurances given to him to persuade him to end his fast.

Prof Agarwal said that he interrupted his fast on a written assurance by the Centre on June 30, 2008 that a mutually acceptable solution would be found to his demand of conserving the Gangotri-Uttarkashi reach in its pristine form and flow within three months.

The Centre had formed a High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) to look into Prof Agarwal’s demands.

Following a lot of hue and cry by saints and Hindu organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and also by the BJP, the state government had decided to shelve the Pala-Maneri and Bhaironghati hydroelectric projects on the Bhagirathi.

However, the work on the Loharinag Pala project, upstream of Uttarkashi on the Bhagirathi being built by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), was not stopped.

Prof Agarwal raised objections on the High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) terming it as a farce and a conspiracy to destroy, for petty physical gains, ‘Mother Ganga’ which was recently designated a national river.

He said that the shortcomings, anomalies and serious lack of needed competence in the HLEG were pointed to the Union government through various letters but were ignored by the government.

Agarwal, a former teacher of IIT, Kanpur, said that work on the Loharinag Pala project has been going on uninterrupted for the past six months.

He threatened that he would resume his fast to demand the immediate stoppage of Loharinag Pala project.

Dr Ravi Chopra of Peoples’ Science Institute (PSI), a close associate of Agarwal, said that he would resume his fast in New Delhi.

MLA booked for firing into air

Haridwar, January 13
Registration of a police case against Laksar Congress legislator Kunwar Parnav Singh, alias Champion, and his supporters for firing in the air at a public function in Haridwar district on January 10 has taken a political turn.

Kunwar Parnav is a scion of the royal family of Landoura in Haridwar district.

Beat officer Iqbal Malik said the incident took place at a bodybuilding function organised at Mangalore near Roorkee.

The case has been registered under Section 30 of the Arms Act for misuse of a licensed arm and creating panic by firing in a public place, he added.

The legislator, however, has refuted the charges and said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state is trying to target him due to his growing popularity among masses.

District convener of Congress human rights cell Chaudhari Arvind Gujjar, who is a close aide of Kunwar Pranav, has also termed it as political conspiracy.

“Kunwar Pranav is the lone Congress legislator from Haridwar district. His rival, education minister Madan Kaushik of the BJP, is trying to implicate him and make him ineligible for the forthcoming polls,” he said. Gujjar warned that if the case was not taken back immediately the Congress and entire Gujjar community would start a statewide agitation.

On the other hand, investigation officer inspector JS Rawat said the case was lodged only after verification of facts and statements of eyewitnesses.

Meanwhile, Kunwar Parnav said firing in air to honour a guest has more to do with royal traditions.

On doing the same in presence of Chief Minister Khanduri on the occasion of his son’s birthday on December 19, 2008, Kunwar Parnav said he had taken permission from Khanduri to welcome him by firing six shots into the air.

“It was an occasion of a visit of a ‘maharaja’ to another ‘raja’,” he said.

The protesting Congress leaders also held that BSP had crossed all levels of mis-governance.

“Most of the ministers in the Mayawati government either have a criminal background or are linked with criminals in some way,” Lachand Sharma alleged.

He said Congress won’t tolerate any disrespect towards the leaders of the country.

He said ‘tainted’ ministers in Mayawati’s cabinet had no right to cast aspersions on national leaders with huge following who enjoyed the trust and respect of the masses.

Ajay Sonkar, Nagesh Ratudi, Nenu Sehgal, Narmada Negi and KS Yadav were prominent participants in the protest.
