Panic buying as pumps run dry
Dehradun, January 8 The strike that started on Wednesday was held on a call given by Oil Sector Officers’ Association (OSOA), which is seeking higher wages for officers of oil public sector undertaking companies in the country. Meanwhile, due to the strike petrol pumps in downtown Dehradun faced shortages. By late evening almost every pump situated on the outskirts of the city ran out of petrol. There was also no supply from the oil depots at Najeebabad and Bijnor. However, a few vehicles of Hindustan Petroleum were expected to reach Dehradun by Thursday evening. But the situation at Bharat Petroleum and Indian Oil pumps will continue to be grim till the stir comes to an end. Dehradun city and the surrounding areas have as many as 35 pumps and Rs 25 lakh litres of petrol is consumed on a daily basis. As many as 55,000 officers from 14 PSU oil companies including ONGC, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL, OIL, Balmer and Lawrie are participating in the stir with a major chunk of these from ONGC Ltd. Roorkee: The ongoing strike by truckers as well as oil sector officials has led to a shortage of petrol and diesel here and in nearby towns. According to Umesh Chandra, general manager of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Najibabad (UP), “We feed the entire Garhwal region with 3.5 lakh litres of oil daily. The strike has crippled the supply in toto since yesterday.” In Roorkee alone, 8-10 oil tankers of the depot are being used everyday, he added. Similarly, supply from the filling plant of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at Landoura has remained suspended since Wednesday. Only the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) filling stations are getting the normal supply as its officials are reportedly not participating in the strike. Meanwhile, all petrol stations witnessed long queues today, but most of the stations went dry early in the morning. “The strike has certainly affected the supply but the panic buying of fuel by the people has further added to the problem,” said a local petrol pump owner. “Nobody knows how long the strike would last, therefore vehicle-owners are resorting to panic buying,” said a contractor Hemant Mehndiratta. There are as many as eight gas stations in the city and its surrounding areas. And to comply with ESMA directives, all owners of petrol stations are maintaining the requisite emergency stock of diesel (2000 litres) and petrol (1000 litres). |

Moharram passes off peacefully
Dehradun, January 8 Earlier, hundreds of Shias gathered at the imambara to listen to SM Ali Hasnain, president of Anjuman Moinul Momineen, who talked about the sacrifices made by Imam Hussain more than 1,400 years ago at Karbala in Iraq along with 72 of his supporters. Hasnain said, “Imam Hussain and his followers laid down their lives for the betterment of humanity.” The mourners filled the street and chanted, “Ya Hussain Shahid Karbala Hussain, Hussein.”. The procession was led by six girls who were carrying ‘almas’, followed by the mourners. In the middle was the Taziya, a replica of Karbala. The frenzy among the mourners reached a high pitch near the Panchayati Mandir, when blood could be seen oozing from their bodies due to the relentless hitting with chains. Shia students from Kargil also participated in the ritual. The procession after passing through the important streets of the city culminated at the Imamullah Building where the Taziya was placed at the Imambara on Gandhi Road. It will be taken back to the EC Road Imambara. In Dehradun, it is a practice to take the Taziya back to the Imambara instead of giving it a burial. “Before Partition, the Taziyas were buried at Kanwali Road. Now, the area has been taken up by colonies and there is no place allocated for the burial of Taziyas,” said AH Naqvi, secretary of Anjuman Moinul Momineen. Haridwar: The processions by the Shias on the occasion of Moharram today went off peacefully in Haridwar district. The Taziya processions passed through Jwalapur main market, Jwalapur Ghoshian area, Telian mohalla and Kasahvan colony. For the peaceful conduct of Moharram, district magistrate Shailesh Bhagoli had made elaborate arrangements. The district was divided into three zones and ten sectors. SDM and magistrates oversaw the processions in sensitive areas. Haridwar senior superintendent of police Sanjay Gunjiyal had also taken the Muslim community into confidence about the preparations. ASP Sweety Aggarwal and city magistrate Archana Grehawar were also present during the procession in Jwalapur. |
