Power cuts in NCR hit industries hard
New Delhi, December 27 According to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), industrial units in the region would lose their production to an extent of 35 per cent if the trend is not checked. Assocham in its latest assessment on shortage of power for around three months said, “Slowdown coupled with low demand has crippled the Indian industries in general, but frequent power cuts have added to the woes of industry especially in major parts of NCR.” Releasing the assessment, Assocham secretary general D S Rawat said, “Current electricity demand of different industrial locations in entire Ghaziabad has gone beyond 400 MW against its availability, which is not more than 200 MW. Due to this, industrial units in Ghaziabad, Sahibabad, Mohan Nagar, Loni and towards Meerut belt are suffering daily loadshedding, ranging from 12 to 14 hours.” Rawat added, “The situation is equally grim as far as residential units in the districts are concerned, but estimates for their power requirement and availability are not available with the chamber.” He also pointed out that Delhi has been facing power shortages to an extent of 900 MW each day. In Gurgaon, the power demand, particularly for its industrial locations is around 1200 to 1400 MW against the availability factor of around 800-900 MW. The worst hit sectors in Noida’s industrial units are in SSI, engineering and spare parts units, export houses, BPOs, call centers and media offices. In Faridabad, the power demand, particularly for its industrial locations are around 600 to 700 MW against the availability factor of around 300 to 400 MW and industrial units are facing daily power cuts of 8-10 hours. “The power shortages have not only hit industrial units in the NCR but also affected efficiency in hospitals, police stations, post offices, banks, educational institutions and corporate offices and if not checked now, may lead to alarming situation,” added Assocham assessment. |

Mission of empowering women still a far cry
New Delhi, December 27 The 2001 census of India by Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) points out that India had one of the lowest sex ratios in the world which is 933 girls to 1000 boys, and what is more worrisome is that the sex ratio is continually dipping. Shockingly, Delhi and NCR have a pathetic ratio of just 762 girls as against 1000 boys as per the 2007 Lancet research. “The trend of declining sex ratio seems to be gaining pace with the practice of sex selective abortions, especially in the urban families, which are far more intolerant to girl child than their rural counterparts. The ministry of health and family welfare’s latest study indicates that the low sex ratio in Delhi is due to the fact that people from the upper class prefer to have a son and perform religious rituals, while taking the assistance of new reproductive technologies,” said Manjula Krishnan of ministry of women and child development while deliberating upon “Mainstreaming Gender Concerns in Policies and Programmes” at a two-day annual convention in the Capital. Similarly, the BIMARU states are leading at the top on son preference and sex pre-selection. In Punjab, the ratio of girls to boys is 793 to 1000, and the primary reason behind this is abominable practices of dowry system and illegal sex determination. The age-old stigma, linked with the female section in a patriarchal society like ours, has denigrated the status of women with an alarming increase in the female deaths across the country. In fact, with female foeticide and infanticide becoming rampant in many states, the whole country is leading to disastrous results. This blatantly points out at the hollowness of our culture. “Calling women as carriers of culture sounds paradoxical and seems to me as tools of oppression. Today when we talk of millennium development goals, the ratio of male to female is very disturbing with ever-increasing female-child mortality rate. Even, alarming is the shrinking of democratic, secular space in media for young women,” said Ritu Menon of Women Unlimited, an NGO. It is not only a culture deficit but also a serious sociological and humanitarian concern. “The issue of female foeticide needs to be urgently addressed by the policy makers as well as civil society partners as it’s not just related to women empowerment, but because it can have serious repercussions on the population balance as well. It is not just declining girl population, but a question of infringement of human rights and most importantly the survival of human race, said Ranjana Kumari, president of WomenPowerConnect (WPC). Besides, female foeticide and declining sex ratio, the other issues that would be taken on the floor during this two-day event are domestic violence, women reservation in political parties and Parliament, and gender-equity budgeting. All the delegates and representatives from NGOs, government and UN bodies called for a mindset-change resulting in a just socio-cultural milieu along with a roadmap for civil society and government partnership to address these issues collectively. Meanwhile, a resource book “Good Practices in Gender Mainstreaming—Case Studies from India” was released on the occasion that is the product of the combined research of ministry of women and child development, WPC and UNDP. This initiative collates the outcome of 14 selective case studies from 110 nominated across the country. The stage has been set by WPC, a consortium of 700 women organisations along with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with the aim to usher in an everlasting change in the status of women, essentially through citizen partnership. |

Bawana power project before Games: CM
New Delhi, December 27 She said that 1500 MW gas-based combined cycle power project—Pragati Power-III—is being considered for issue of the mega power status certificate. Dikshit along with union minister of state for power Jai Ram Ramesh inspected the sites of the project where various construction activities are in process. Dikshit was also accompanied by chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, power secretary Rajendra Kumar and other senior officers of PPCL and IPGCL. “The gas supply arrangements have already been signed with GAIL, IOC and BPCL. GAIL has started laying of pipeline and installation of gas terminal at site,” said Dikshit. “The gas turbine-I would start generating 250 MW in March 2010, gas turbine-II would generate another 250 MW in May 2010, gas turbine-III would also generate 250 MW in July 2010. A steam turbine-I would generate 250 MW in July 2010 whereas rest 500 MW would be generated before the commencement of Commonwealth Games 2010 by gas turbine-IV and steam turbine-II,” said the Chief Minister. Dikshit also said that with the commissioning of Pragati Power-III project, there would be no shortage of power during the Commonwealth Games 2010 and all venues would have un-interrupted power supply. This would also go a long way in making Delhi a power-surplus state. |
Vardhan urges Sheila not to permit hike in power tariff
New Delhi, December 27 “If discoms resort to loadshedding, penalty must be evoked against them with immediate effect so that citizens of Delhi get rid of them,” said Vardhan. He said the three discoms had been carrying out undeclared loadshedding in almost all areas of Delhi. “From the last two weeks, there is no power for at least six hours daily at Sadar Bazar. The traders have warned the government if power supply is not made regular in the next 48 hours, they would be forced to protest,” informed Vardhan. He alleged discoms were benefiting by selling power meant for Delhi to Punjab, Haryana, UP and J&K. Delhiites are being deceived. “Discoms sell power to other states at Rs 7 per unit whereas they have to sell it to Delhi at mere Rs 3 per unit. They make a profit of at least Rs 4 per unit. Therefore, loadshedding is carried out for at least five to six hours daily almost across Delhi,” said Vardhan. Private power companies have demanded an increase of 65% in tariff from the Electricity Tribunal Commission. However, as per privatisation rules, after five years of privatisation discoms will purchase power and will have to supply power to Delhi on low tariffs. “It is six and half years of privatisation. Discoms have become addicted to government subsidy. The matter of fictitious Annual Revenue Account was also traced, but the government has not yet taken any action against them,” alleged Vardhan. |
