Shamshad had to carry out some repair work on the roof of his house. According to the police, Shamshad (36) and his relative Chand Mian (18) were stabbed to death by Abdullaha and his relatives. Besides, four persons from both the sides were injured. “Shamshad and Chand Mian were attacked with a meat-cutter that caused their deaths while, four others have been hurt. Knife, sticks and rods were used by both the parties,” said a police official. While Abdullaha and Chand Mian died on the spot, the others are recuperating at the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital here. They reportedly are out of danger. The police has recorded the statements of the injured and case under Section-302 of the IPC has been registered against Abdullaha and three of his relatives. Abdullaha’s cousin, Parvez, told the police that Shamshad and his family attacked them first. They were forced to retaliate. Whereas Shamshad’s family maintained that Abdullaha attacked him first. Meanwhile, Abdullaha and his relatives involved in the fight are absconding. No arrest was reported till late evening. According to the police, Shamshad and Abdullaha’s families have been on bad terms from years. The two families often indulged in abuses and fights. Their neighbours and the police have sorted out matters between them several times. However, the exact cause of rivalry between the two families could not be confirmed. |
2 killed, 25 injured in pile-up of 40 vehicles
Ghaziabad, December 26 The first collision happened when a truck hit a tempo. This was followed by a Tata Safari ramming into the same truck. After which 37 other vehicles hit each other one after the other. The drivers of the tempo and Tata Safari were killed. While, the driver of the tempo—Zahid, 35, a resident of Siana in Bulandshahar—died on the spot, the driver of Tata Safari— Raj Deep, a resident of Punjabi Bagh in New Delhi—died on the way to hospital. Ten out of the 25 injured are stated to be in a serious condition. They have been admitted to hospitals in Hapur and Delhi. The area had been enveloped by a thick sheet of fog since Wednesday morning. The incident happened at around 5 am. Reportedly, the taillight of the tempo was not working and so the truck coming from behind could not see it. The tempo, under the impact of the collision, turned turtle after hitting the road divider. Both the vehicles were going from Delhi to Gajraula. Those seriously injured included, Jishant, Nafis, Manish, Sushil, Shyamveer, Pawan, Raj Kumar, Satyaullah, Naseem, and Praveen, all residents of Muradabad. The victims were helped and rescued by the passers-by. The collision resulted in a 5 km-long jam on the Hapur road, which took three hours to clear. This is not a lone accident caused by fog this year. A number of road accidents had also been reported due to fog from different parts of Ghaziabad like Rakesh Marg, Nehru Nagar, Govindpuram, Vaishali, Indirapuram and Rajinder Nagar. However, thankfully nobody was seriously injured in these accidents. |
Water crisis continues in several Delhi areas
New Delhi, December 26 Pollutants released into the river by a large number of tanneries in Haryana had increased ammonia level in the water to the point where Wazirabad and Chandrawal treatment plants had to be shut down. “There was no supply of potable water from these plants and because of that water supply was affected,” said a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official. The 120 million gallon per day (MGD) Wazirabad plant and the 90 MGD Chandrawal Plant, supply water to parts of South, Central, West Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) areas. “There is still water shortage. Naturally when the plants will remain shut for nearly 24 hours, water supply would be affected,” said R.K. Garg of DJB. “Though there is some improvement in the quality of raw water, the water supply will remain affected for some more time,” the DJB official added. “The areas which are affected are Karol Bagh, NDMC area, Paharganj, Azad Market, Civil Lines, Metcalfe House, Hindu Rao Hospital, Rajender Nagar, Patel Nagar, Baljeet Nagar, and South Delhi,” the DJB official said. He promised that the problem would be solved soon. — IANS |

AIIMS doctors feel quota for vacancies is illegal
New Delhi, December 26 Ninety-five posts of faculty that were advertised under the reserved category on November 4 were put in abeyance following resentment from the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) and the Faculty Association. The doctors said the move of advertising all the faculty vacancies was “illegal and irrational”. “The ministry is calling it a move to fill the backlog. However, the backlog only happens when there are seats vacant even after the process of recruitment is over,” said Dr Binod Khaitan, president, Faculty Association, AIIMS. Dr Khaitan added, “There cannot be a backlog if the institute has recruited candidates under reserved category in the past.” The 95 vacancies are for posts of additional professor, associate professor and professor. “The Supreme Court has only allowed reservations at entry-level posts. The institute cannot have reservation at higher levels. The reservation issue has been referred to the five-judge bench in the Supreme Court,” said Dr Khaitan. The RDA also called a general body meeting on the issue and decided to oppose the move. “Just because one minister is pro-reservation, a whole institute cannot be pro-reservation. We have our contentions. The interference from the government has reached the extent where the fate of faculty recruitment is also decided by the ministry,” said Dr Harsh, president, RDA. The RDA had also alleged that another 186 posts for junior resident doctor that were opened for recruitment were also taken back due to the controversy surrounding the faculty posts. “Due to the crossfire surrounding the vacancies at the institute, there would be more than 300 posts vacant by January and the institute would bear a heavy staff crunch,” said Dr Harsh. However, there is another section within the doctors that maintains that the seats should be fulfilled under the special recruitment drive for reserved categories. The pro-reservation group — Progressive Medicos and Scientists Forum — said it was the Prime Minister’s Office that was allegedly interfering in the process of filling the backlog of vacancies of reserved category seats at the institute. |
New Delhi, December 26 Stephen Able, 47, a resident of Chatarpur village, was returning home with his wife Asha and their three children - two daughters and a son - after a party in Patparganj area in a taxi when they were chased and attacked by three taxi drivers near Nizammudin flyover late Thursday. The three taxi drivers have been identified as Kishan Singh Ravat, Vikas Singh and Sanjay Kumar. The police said that the dispute started when Able allegedly in an inebriated state went to a taxi stand to hire a car. But cab driver Kumar at the stand turned away the customer and a heated argument broke out between them. Able allegedly also slapped Kumar, and then hired another cab and he and his family left from the spot. However, Kumar and his friends gave Able and his family a chase and intercepted their taxi near the Nizammudin flyover. “We could see a car chasing us throughout. I was keeping my fingers crossed and praying that they don’t harm my family and me,” Able told reporters. The taxi drivers broke the glasses of the hired car and thrashed Able and his family, the police said. The driver of Able’s car managed to escape and informed the police. The arrested driver, Kumar said: “It was late in the night and I was tired after a day’s work. The family wanted to hire a taxi for a long distance and the man (Able) was badly drunk. So I refused them.” “But he got physical and started abusing me,” Kumar added. Able, however, denied slapping Kumar.— IANS |
School fee: Panel to submit report in a week
New Delhi, December 26 Education department officials said government will decide on the issue of fee hike after the committee submits its report. “We are expecting the report within one week and accordingly a decision will be taken on the issue,” they said. The private schools are demanding a hike of 50 per cent in fees ostensibly to pay salaries to their teachers on the lines of recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. However, parents are opposing the move. The government is unlikely to concede to the demand of the schools for a 50 per cent increase across the board. Officials said there was no question of accepting the demand, as some schools have surplus money in their kitty to increase salaries of their teachers. The Bansal committee was constituted in October to look into the demands of the private school and give its recommendations on the issue. The action committee, representing 1,900 private schools, had already submitted their demand to the committee. Earlier, the government had said that they will examine the fee hike proposal on a case-by-case basis. Nursery admissions are currently taking place in the city and some schools have already informed the parents about a possible fee hike soon. |

Middle-class makes the most from Indirapuram housing scheme
Ghaziabad, December 26 The main reason for all flats having been sold out was that middle class buyers could afford them. A number of other builders are also likely to launch similar schemes. The builders reportedly changed their styles due to the demand for flats. The builders say, “We will construct housing units as per the needs of people this New Year. We will be able to make available dwelling units for Rs 4 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.” The managing director of Land Craft Developers Atul Garg says now villagers will buy our houses and the real estate business will again bloom after April 2009. Building luxurious houses is no longer the target. We shall build houses as per common man’s aspirations and need. His company will make houses ranging from Rs 4 to Rs 10 lakh. Garg added that bank loans Garg will become cheaper and people who are really in need of a house will benefit from it.” Manoj Gaur, director of Gaur Sons Developers, also feels that the dream for a house of a common man will now be fulfilled. Builders will make residential units for lower middle-class people. He had constructed affordable houses in Indirapuram, which were sold like hot cakes. The GDA is also supporting builders in constructing economy class dwelling units, Gaur affirmed. |
