Advantage Australia
Bangalore, October 12 After the Indian tailenders led by Zaheer Khan (57 not out) stretched the first innings to 360 and narrowed down the lead to 70 runs, the visitors battled their way to 193 for five at close on the penultimate day to gain an overall lead of 263 runs. It turned out to be engrossing contest between the bat and ball on a deteriorating Chinnaswamy track as the Australians pushed for a substantial lead to exert pressure on the hosts on the final day. The runs were difficult to come by as the Australians kept losing wickets at regular intervals but still had the upper hand in the game considering that the pitch would deteriorate further on the final day. With just one day left, the visitors will look to add a few quick runs in the morning tomorrow before having a crack at the Indians. Simon Katich (34) and first innings centurion Michael Hussey (31) were the notable contributors as they ensured that the Australian second innings did not fall into pieces. Shane Watson (32 batting) and Brad Haddin (28 batting) added some quick runs late in the day to consolidate the position for the visitors. Resuming at the overnight score of 313 for eight, the Indian lower order continued its fightback by holding up for 85 minutes before the innings folded up for 360. Zaheer, who shared an 80-run eighth wicket partnership with Harbhajan Singh to save the blushes for India yesterday, top-scored with 57 not out to compliment with his five-wicket haul in the Australian first innings. Zaheer overtaking Harbhajan as the top scorer was the highlight of the morning session on the fourth day. The fiesty left-arm pacer carried on with his fine knock yesterday to notch up his second Test fifty from 106 balls, when he took a two off Mitchell Johnson. His previous highest score in Tests was 75 against Bangladesh when he added 100 runs for the last wicket in the company of Sachin Tendulkar in Dhaka against Bangladesh in 2004. This morning, he lost his overnight partner, skipper Anil Kumble, who made only five on team score of 343 but after sharing a crucial 31-run stand for the ninth wicket to inch India's first innings total closer to Australia's 430 on a difficult pitch. Ishant Sharma was the last man out for six, 25 minutes before lunch, bowled by Michael Clarke, but not before surviving for half an hour. Indian tail-enders thus contributed an invaluable 128 runs after the fall of seventh wicket - that of Sourav Ganguly. The Australian second innings started on a disastrous note as they lost opener Matthew Hayden (13) and captain Ricky Ponting (17) cheaply much to the delight of the Indians. Hayden was trapped leg before by a late swinging delivery from Zaheer soon after lunch. The Indian medium pacer had also accounted for the towering opener's dismissal in the first innings. Just before Hayden's dismissal India had a chance to see the back of Katich, but Gambhir at short leg reacted late to an inside edge off Harbhajan Singh. First innings centurion, Ponting fell to a good length angled delivery from young pacer Ishant Sharma with VVS Laxman taking a low catch at short midwicket. Indian captain Anil Kumble, who was suffering from a sore shoulder, took the field in the 23rd over of Australia's second innings immediately after the dismissal of Ponting. Kumble was applied ice packs by team physio and he did not bowl in the post lunch session but introduced Virender Sehwag from the BEML end for a breakthrough replacing Harbhajan Singh, who bowled a tight spell of 12 overs. —

Roaring Tigers thump Lahore Badshahs
Hyderabad, October 12 The Badshahs opened with their formidable combination of Imran Farhat and Nazir, who got off to a steady start; placed at 22 for no loss at the end of the first three overs. Some tight bowling, resulted in a mix-up in the middle, resulting in Nazir falling short of his crease to give the Tigers the first breakthrough in the fifth over when the Badshahs were at 28. The 11th over saw a bowling change in the form of the experienced leggie Upul Chandana, who got the second breakthrough packing back Mughal cheaply. This set the stage for skipper Inzamam, looking in a dangerous mood scoring 19 off just eleven balls before Chandana struck a blow, getting him to nick one to Deep Dasgupta who took a sharp catch to see the back of the great man. Chandana worked up a great spell sending back Farhat and Azhar Mahmood in quick succession to end with brilliant figures of 4/21 in his allotted four overs. The spirited Tigers were all over the field not allowing any space to their formidable opponents. McMillan also showcased his sides bowling prowess using six frontline bowlers; restricting the mighty Badshahs to a partly 139/6 in their allotted 20 overs. The Tigers’ chase opened in the form of new recruit Hamish Marshall accompanying the experienced Deep Dasgupta. They got the Tigers off to a good start and at the end of the third over, the Tigers were right on target at 25 for no loss. Both batsmen made most of the chances they got due to some lacklustre fielding, and played some sensible strokes to take the score to 42 at the five over mark. Finally Saqlain broke the 52-run partnership with the wicket of Deep Dasgupta in the seventh over. Jhunjhunwala looked all at sea against the legendary Saqlain and turned out to be his second victim leaving the Tigers in a bit of a bother at 55/2 at the end of the 7th over. But then Marshall came up with a top class 76 runs off 56 balls that included nine fours and 2 sixes, which is the highest individual score at ICL season-2 till now to see his side home. — UNI Scoreboard Lahore Badshahs I Nazir run out 9 I Farhat st Dasgupta b Chandana 37 T Mughal c & b Chandana 8 Inzamam c Dasgupta b Chandana 19 S Yousuf not out 32 A Mahmood c Jhunjhunwala b Chandana 3 Naved Latif c Jhunjhunwala b Klusener 1 K Mahmood not out 14 Extras (b-8, lb-3, w-5) 16 Total (6 wkts, 20 overs) 139 Fall of wickets: 1-28, 2-54, 3-84, 4-95, 5-100, 6-106 Bowling: A Ahmed 3.3-0-23-0, Diwakar 2-0-13-0, AR Adams 4-0-25-0, Eklak Ahmid 4-0-22-0, Chandana 4-0-21-4, Klusener 2.3-0-24-1 Royal Bengal Tigers Marshall not out 76 Dasgupta c A Mahmood b Saqlain 20 Jhunjhunwala st K Mahmood b Saqlain 3 CD McMillan not out 35 Extras (lb-3, w-3) 6 Total (2 wkts, 17.4 overs) 140 Fall of wickets: 1-51, 2-55 Bowling: A Mahmood 3-0-24-0, Sami 3-0-23-0, T Mughal 2-0-16-0, S Nazir 3-0-35-0, Saqlain Mushtaq 4-0-19-2, I Farhat 2-0-15-0, N Latif 0.4-0-5-0 Player of the match: Marshall (Royal Bengal Tigers). |

Margao, October 12 Dempo who lost to JCT in their first match have collected three points from two matches. While Vasco who suffered their second defeat have one point from three matches. Vasco did put up a fight and reduced the margin through the Uzbekistan striker Ravshan Teshabaev. Dempo made a impressive start as their midfield combined well with their strikers with quick short passes. Anthony Pereira who did lot of running on the right, troubled the rival defense with overhead crosses as Dempo kept Vasco under pressure for the first 30 minutes and could have taken early lead but Mboyo Iyomi who was off colour today and Ranty Martins failed to direct their header on target. Meanwhile, local outfit Air India outsmarted depleted Kolkata giants East Bengal 2-0 to notch up their maiden victory in this season’s I-League at the Cooperage ground here today. AI rode on second-half strikes by midfielders Surojit Roy (48th minute) and Nigerian import Michael Tayo (78th) to inflict on their rivals their second defeat in three matches. AI took full advantage of the absence, through illness and injuries, of key East Bengal players Sunil Chetri, Edmilson, Alvito D’Cunha and Surkumar Singh to hold sway over their rivals. The victory also took their points tally to five after two drawn ties earlier. EB, who came into the tie with a win and a loss to their credit, remained on three points after the third round clash. After a goalless first half, in which East Bengal’s striker Praveen Kumar fluffed a header, the local outfit took the lead in the third minute after resumption of play. Soccor Velho made a move on the right side of the field, utstripped two East Bengal defenders and then laid a pass to Kailash Patil, who in turn crossed it to Roy on his eft to find the target. The second goal by Tayo was the result of AI’s substitute Subash Singh snatching the ball from rival midfielder Renedy Singh and then making a fast run before relaying the ball or the African forward to right-foot it to the left corner of the goal. Also Playing their first season in the ONGC I-league, local outfit Chirag United held favourites Churchill Brothers to a goalless draw at Vidyasagar Stadium here tonight. Though on paper Churchill were termed favourites, it was Chirag United who dominated all through with Snehasish Chakrabarty and custodian Ravikant excelling in their respective areas. — PTI |
Jwala wins twin titles at Bulgarian GP
New Delhi, October 12 The Indian duo overcame initial hiccups and rallied from behind to pip the Indonesian pair 15-21, 21-18, 21-19 in a 45-minute gruelling contest. The pair had won the Bitburger Grand Prix mixed doubles title in Saarbruecken, Germany last week, which catapulted them to World number 55 in the latest ranking. There was more good news for 25-year-old Jwala as she paired up with her doubles partner Shruti Kurian to thump second seeded Indonesian duo of Irawati and Meiliana Jauhari in straight-games to bring home her second title of the day. The World number 26 pair, who also has the distiction of winning the National Badminton Doubles Champions seven times, spanked Irawati-Jauhari 21-11, 21-19 in just 28 minutes. On her twin title wins Jwala said she was very happy and extended her regards to her coach S.M. Arif. “I am very excited, very happy and I want to thank my coach S.M. Arif for his constant support,” she said. “We lost the first game. I was actually not at my best but Diju played really beautifully. We decided we won’t go into defensive mode and kept attacking, which eventually paid off,” Jwala added. However, Jwala says it was her performance in the doubles match that was more satisfying. “But the doubles match was very satisfying. We were coordinating well and the Indonesian pair had no clue, they just could not understand what was happening,” she said. Asked what was her next target, Jwala said she just wants to concentrate on her game and not bother about the ranking. “I am not bothered about ranking. I just want to focus on performance and do well. I am playing well, the defence, the attack everything is coming well,” she said. “However, I think I need to be more consistent and work on my mental aspect of the game. More confidence is needed and I think winning these titles have given me a lot of confidence now,” she said. — PTI |
Alonso wins Japanese GP

The Formula One title rivals both received drive-through penalties, Hamilton for cutting across Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari and causing mayhem behind him in a mad dash to the first corner. Massa, who survived several scrapes during the race, was similarly penalised after the Brazilian collided with Hamilton on lap two, spinning the McLaren and leaving the Briton at the back of the field. —

Liang wins Indian Open
New Delhi, October 12 Jeev Milkha Singh, despite a strained right neck and shoulder, gave a nice makeover to his fortune to finish fourth, which was his best-ever in the Indian Open. He had finished 13th last year, which was hitherto his best. Going into the 18th hole, the 30-year-old Liang was tied 15-under with Darren Beck of Australia, but the Chinese player kept his nerve to rake in that vital point to end the fourth round at 2-under 70 for an overall lead of 16-under 272 (60,71,71,70). Liang pocketed a prize money of $158,500 while second-placed Darren Beck, who had the best card of seven-under 65 in the fourth round, took home $108,500 in stakes. Adam Blyth, also of Australia, who finished ahead of Jeev at the third place, won $61,000 while Jeev earned $49,300. From the Indian perspective, the final day’s play was quite satisfying as Mukesh Kumar and Ashok Kumar shared the sixth position to earn $31,000 each. However, for defending champion Jyoti Randhawa, the 45th edition was an eminently forgettable affair as he was relegated to the 57th position, which he shared with four others. Jyoti carded a two-over 74 today for a miserable overall tally of two-under 290 (74, 69,73,74). But Jeev, despite a few faltering steps, made a fine recovery to end up fourth at 12-under 276. He had thought of pulling out in the morning due to a neck sprain. “My neck went out in the morning, but my physio helped me get over it with some deft treatment. I was on pain killers”, Jeev said after the day’s play. “I am pretty pleased, having got a top ten finish”, he added. Jeev said Liang fully deserved his title triumph, which from the Indian angle, was a kind of quid pro quo as Jeev had won the Chinese Volvo Open this year. But it was no smooth sailing for Liang on the home stretch as he blotted his chances when he bogied in the 14th and double bogied in the 15th hole to trail for the first time in the championship. With Darren Beck breathing down his neck, Liang needed to do well in the next three holes. He had a par on the 16th, and then got his act together in the next two holes as well to clinch the title, most deservingly. “I felt very happy for Liang, the way he finished 16-under. Liang was the best player”, Jeev praised the Chinese champ. Jeev said in the end, he himself was short by three-under. Though the shoulder strain did not affect his play much, he bogied twice, in the fifth and 16th holes, to mar his hopes of finishing higher in the order. Jeev said too much golf was taking a heavy toll on his body as lately, he had become very injury prone. “I need to slow down, I need to play lesser tournaments”, he said. |
