Bharoana (Kapurthala), September 4
Even as Independence Day was celebrated with gusto throughout the country, the day proved to be a harrowing one for an aged couple of this village since the floods virtually washed away the arrangements made to solemnise the marriage of their daughter.

The swirling waters of the Chitti Bein and the Sutl ej entered their house and swept away all household goods, forcing the family to postpone the marriage of their daughter Nindar Kaur.

Bant Singh (80) and his wife Mukhtiar Kaur (75) of Bharoana were forced to beg to the family members of the groom to postpone the wedding. They could solemnise Nindar’s marriage after the flood water receded to some extent and that too in Lohian.

Narrating his tale of woes to The Tribune, Bant Singh, who has not been keeping well since the death of his elder son nearly six month ago, lamented, “The flood water entered our house and destroyed almost all the belongings and goods arranged for the marriage. We could manage to shift only a few belongings to the terrace of the house before the muddy water rose to a level of nearly 10 feet.

“A pall of gloom descended on the house. Since every thing was ruined, we requested Nindar Kaur’s in-laws, residents of Mothanwala village in Ferozepore district, to change the marriage date. They were kind enough and finally the marriage was solemnised on August 27,” put in Mukthiar Kaur.

The family has been camping in the village gurdwara along with other flood-affected residents and the “langar” provided by the gurdwara management for over a fortnight, is the only source of food.

When he heard that the deputy commissioner was coming to the village to disburse some money, the old and ailing man trudged a long distance from the gurdwara to his house but was shattered when he came to know that instead of the DC, local SDM K.S. Chandi held a meeting with residents of Takia village nearby and did not bother to come to their village. This, despite the fact that the administration had informed them that the DC would be visiting the village to address their grievances. Is this the way to treat people who have already lost all their belongings, crops and their houses, he lamented.

Hospitable hosts

Although they might have lost virtually everything to the floods, the Punjabiat among the flood-affected residents was still evident as they offered water and tea to those who came to the village to extend their sympathies. “Baitho ji, cha piyaiye”, was the common refrain of most of the people at the relief camp and adjoining villages here.

Jalandhar, September 4
After diarrhoea, a suspected case of dengue was reported in the city today. While the health authorities claimed it to be a suspected case, experts confirmed it a positive case of dengue.

Resident of Bhargo Colony Kulwinder Singh was admitted in the civil hospital with high fever and body ache yesterday. After the blood test reports indicated it to be a suspected case of dengue, the health authorities have shifted him to the isolation ward.

Jalandhar civil surgeon Dr S.S. Walia claimed that blood tests of Kulwinder Singh had shown a blood platelet count (57,000) and IGM positive. Taking precautionary measure, the patient had been shifted to the isolation ward and was under constant observation of doctors. The blood platelet count of a healthy man varied from one lakh to three lakh and if it came down from 30,000 then the case was said to be critical, he added.

Meanwhile, panic has gripped the area and the roles of the district health authorities and the Jalandhar municipal corporation have come under scanner.

Batala/Jalandhar, September 4
Harjant Singh, who was listed among the top terrorists of Punjab, was arrested by the Jalandhar police today. The police reportedly has seized some arms and ammunition from his possession.

Though the Batala and Jalandhar police authorities were tightlipped about his arrest till late night, sources in the police revealed Harjant Singh, alias DC, a resident of Vijliwala village in Batala, was arrested by the CIA Staff of the Jalandhar police after his name figured in a number of anti-national activities.

The Jalandhar police actually picked him up from Vijliwala village and showed his arrest from Kala Sanghia village in Kapurthala district. Top police officials, including the Batala SSP, and Jalandhar SSP P.K. Rai, did not pick up their telephones despite repeated calls till late night.

There was confusion about the actual name of the suspect if he was Gurjant Singh or Harjant Singh as the police did not come to the records.

Sources said Harjant Singh, who faced a number of terror-related crimes, was arrested for a murder allegedly committed by him in 2001. He was on bail in this case since 2007.
