Deluged, they prayed for one miracle: Daughter’s wedding
Bharoana (Kapurthala), September 4 The swirling waters of the Chitti Bein and the Sutl ej entered their house and swept away all household goods, forcing the family to postpone the marriage of their daughter Nindar Kaur. Bant Singh (80) and his wife Mukhtiar Kaur (75) of Bharoana were forced to beg to the family members of the groom to postpone the wedding. They could solemnise Nindar’s marriage after the flood water receded to some extent and that too in Lohian. Narrating his tale of woes to The Tribune, Bant Singh, who has not been keeping well since the death of his elder son nearly six month ago, lamented, “The flood water entered our house and destroyed almost all the belongings and goods arranged for the marriage. We could manage to shift only a few belongings to the terrace of the house before the muddy water rose to a level of nearly 10 feet. “A pall of gloom descended on the house. Since every thing was ruined, we requested Nindar Kaur’s in-laws, residents of Mothanwala village in Ferozepore district, to change the marriage date. They were kind enough and finally the marriage was solemnised on August 27,” put in Mukthiar Kaur. The family has been camping in the village gurdwara along with other flood-affected residents and the “langar” provided by the gurdwara management for over a fortnight, is the only source of food. When he heard that the deputy commissioner was coming to the village to disburse some money, the old and ailing man trudged a long distance from the gurdwara to his house but was shattered when he came to know that instead of the DC, local SDM K.S. Chandi held a meeting with residents of Takia village nearby and did not bother to come to their village. This, despite the fact that
the administration had informed them that the DC would be visiting the village to address their grievances. Is this the way to treat people who have already lost all their belongings, crops and their houses, he lamented. Hospitable hosts Although they might have lost virtually everything to the floods, the Punjabiat among the flood-affected residents was still evident as they offered water and tea to those who came to the village to extend their sympathies. “Baitho ji, cha piyaiye”, was the common refrain of most of the people at the relief camp and adjoining villages here. |
