Pb primary schools ride the radio wave

Ludhiana, August 27
Thousands of primary schools are being provided education through radio in Punjab as part of the Sarv Shikhia Abhiyan by the state government. To make the initiative successful, radio sets have been provided to 13,000 primary schools in the state.

The objective is to make education accessible to those children who cannot attend a regular school.

Launched on August 7, the “learning through radio” programme of the Sarv Shikhia Abhiyan is meant for students of government primary schools. It includes general knowledge, languages and regular curriculum.

Government schoolteachers today impart lessons to the primary schoolchildren through All India Radio as an attempt to improve the quality of education provided in the state-run schools.

At 12 noon everyday, students of primary schools in Punjab have a guest - a radio set. Students tune in to the half-an-hour programme relayed from the Jalandhar station of All India Radio.

“We have benefited a lot from radio since it enhances our general knowledge. We should listen to the radio as the programmes help us immensely, just as our parents and teachers do,” said a student.

“Radio is very beneficial for us. It answers our questions very well,” said another student.

Schoolteachers from different districts are selected to undergo a training programme under the Sarv Shikhia Abhiyan. They are taught how to introduce subjects, content and conclusion.

Parveen, a teacher, said: “After listening to the radio for half an hour, students have improved significantly. Watching TV they can observe and listen, but for the radio they have to concentrate on the subject only by listening. Through radio we are imparting general knowledge to the students. They have been told about their regular syllabus. A revision of the same lesson, first in classroom and then on radio, will enable students to be more proficient.” Under free and compulsory education, all children in the age group of 6 to 14 are provided free primary education.

In order to achieve the goal of Sarv Shikhia Abhiyan, efforts are being made to increase retention of children in schools, increase their enrolment and innovative approach in the schools.

“Learning through radio” will add another positive dimension to improve the standard of primary education in Punjab. — ANI

According to sources, there has been rise in fake currency seizures this month with the first seizure of Rs 9 lakh in fake currency taking place on August 6 at Rasoolpur village near Tarn Taran. The seizure was made by the Counter- Intelligence and state’s Special Narcotics Cell leading to the arrest of Darbara Singh of Ban Tara Singh village under Khalra police station area.

The sources said following this there were two more seizures in the same sector. On August 16 the 48th battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) seized Rs 10 lakh in fake currency at Narli village under Khalra police station. Two labourers, who had been engaged to bring back sacks of pears from the fields of Dayal Singh situated across the fence on the border, were caught bringing back the fake currency. The police is probing whether the farmer was also involved in the racket and has arrested two persons Bikker Singh and Jindu in the case.

In the third seizure the BSF men recovered Rs 9.98 lakh in fake currency from the fields of Swaran Singh of Daunke village in the same sector. The recovery made it clear anti-national elements were throwing the money across the border and their cohorts on this side were hiding it at predestined places before it could be transferred further. In the fourth recovery Kashmir Singh alias Sodhi of Ammiwal village under Makhu police station in Ferozepur and Hazur Singh of Sarhali village in Tarn Taran were arrested with Rs 1.45 lakh in fake currency.

Agencies feel the fake currency entering the country from Pakistan could be for terror activities and have started probe into whether the money was sent for any particular “assignment”. Besides this they feel money could also be supplied to smugglers as incentive as the drug trafficking in heroin has increased following bumper poppy crop in Afghanistan. Preliminary investigations have revealed the notes are also sold off in the market to destabilise the country’s economy.

While most of the recovered currency was in Rs 500 denomination and of good quality, what was disturbing was that now fake currency in Rs 100 denomination was also being smuggled into the country from Pakistan. The sources said the Special Narcotics Cell in one of the seizures recovered Rs 90,000 in Rs 100 denomination.

Lakhi Mandal, who also hails from Bengal, is at large. Accident claim: Pay up, insurance firm told
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, August 27
The district consumer forum headed by president P.D. Geol has directed the New India Assurance Company to pay Rs 24,094.88, along with 9 per cent interest from the date of complaint and Rs 1,000 as litigation expenses to complainant Darshan Singh.

According to information, Darshan had lodged a complaint with the forum that the company had failed to settle his vehicle’s accident claim. He said his Mahindra pick-up vehicle, which was insured by the company, met with an accident and was totally damaged. He added the company repudiated the claim on the ground that the vehicle did not possess a fitness certificate at the time of accident.

The forum held that there was no nexus between non-possession of a fitness certificate and the accident which took place due to stopping of a bus in the middle of the road. It added that a fitness certificate was relevant only if the vehicle was unfit to be plied on the road and there was no breach of the contract. So the company did not justify its repudiation of claim and was ordered to pay the amount.
