Many 1st year students in poll fray
New Delhi, August 27 The selected candidates from the NSUI are Sonia Sapra who stands for president, Malohar Nagar for vice-president, Amit Chaudhry for secretary and Ashish Gehlot for joint secretary. Candidates of the ABVP are Nupur Sharma for president, Vasu Rukhr for vice-president and Anupriya Yadav for secretary. From the INSO, there is Vikas from Sivaji College (BA) programme first year, Yashwant Saroha for vice-president from Khalsa college BA programme first year. Interestingly, many first year students are in the fray this time round and hectic campaigning is under way at DU. Sources within the NSUI say that they are satisfied with the decision of the court which gave no judgement on the rejected candidates. Quintal Krishna, the NSUI spokesperson said, “We are only focusing on our campaign right now and currently working on our strategy for the next few days. As for the rejected candidates, they have to go by the court’s decision. The party is quite satisfied.” The three rejected NSUI candidates, Tanupriya Gupta, Bhavana Gera and Deepka Deshwal, had earlier told the court that their nomination papers were rejected on Monday due to a fault of their college principals and heads of departments and that they should be allowed to apply afresh. However, the court today gave them a patient hearing and advised them to go by the university’s decision. |
Protesting students disrupt traffic
New Delhi, August 27 Shouting slogans demanding adequate facilities of drinking water, clean toilets and adequate security, the students sat on the road before they were persuaded to disperse by senior officials who were rushed there to defuse the situation. The spill effect of the traffic blockage was felt on the other roads in East Delhi, especially during the morning rush hour. According to the students, the school lacks even the most basic facilities and repeated pleas by them and their parents had apparently fallen on deaf ears. The teachers too had often brought the lack of basic facilities to the authorities concerned. The parents of some of the students said that they were mostly concerned by the lack of security as hooligans often thronged the area. There have been many incidents of eve-teasing and molestations. The students were more vulnerable to sexual assaults as they are forced to ease themselves out in the open because of lack of clean toilets. Senior officials who visited the spot later said that the higher authorities had been informed and corrective action will be taken soon. |
JNU admin postpones Boucher’s visit
New Delhi, August 27 Richard Boucher was invited by the School of Life Sciences in JNU for an interaction with students on the Indo-US nuclear deal and Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG) meet. In the middle of a lot of drama outside the venue where Boucher was going to speak today, the administration announced the postponement without fixing any further date for the talk. The university did not give any reason for the postponement. However, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) believes that the university is shying away from giving the reason behind the cancellation. “The talk has been cancelled and not postponed. The university is covering up the matter by stating that it could not go against the will of students. We believe it is JNUSU’s victory that we succeeded in keeping the American representative away,” said JNUSU president Sandeep. Amid tight security on the campus, the Left student organisations surrounded the School of Life Sciences and protested against America. “He represents America and we are opposed to America’s politics. Boucher’s visit cannot be allowed to pass off as another routine affair. It is a direct ploy on the part of JNU establishment to parade its loyalty to the present regime which is seeking legitimacy for surrendering to American imperialism,” said JNUSU vice-president Shephalika. The JNUSU maintains that it is not violating the freedom of expression. “Dissent has an important place when we talk about freedom of expression. We are against the American policies and not a person. The protest aims to prove the point that no force indulging in imperialism and occupation can use JNU’s platform to justify mass murder and racism under any pretext,” said Meera, councillor, JNUSU. The students said that Boucher’s was not an academic visit. “This was never an academic visit. His visit to the university would have legitimised American policies. The university had sent a message against the Indo-US nuclear deal and American policies,” said Renu from Progressive Students’ Union (PSU). Students said that they wanted their message to be clear so that no representative of any imperial regime could be welcomed in JNU. “Having an opinion and defending it is the fundamental role of a students’ organisation. Some expansionist cannot be allowed to put his hate speech in front of people,” said Shatam from Students’ Federation of India (SFI). “I oppose the American policies in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and in my own country Sudan. I am here to show my dissent against the intention of the US to be the dictator of the world,” said Khalid from International Students’ Federation, JNU. After the cancellation of Boucher’s visit, JNUSU office bearers protested against the Indo-US nuclear deal and Congress students’ wing National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). “We can also oppose him but he has a right to speak in the university. Earlier, when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had come to the university, the same people disrupted his speech as well,” said Simmy Joseph, president, JNU-NSUI. Surprisingly, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) students’ organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also defended Boucher’s right to speak. The BJP opposes the deal at the centre. “When these communists can get terrorists on the campus for public meetings then people from Bush’s administration can also come and talk,” said Amit Singh from
ABVP. |
DPCC seeks correction of errors in voter I-cards
New Delhi, August 27 The DPCC delegation included Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, Delhi ministers Dr A. K. Walia, Dr Yoganand Shastri, Mangat Ram Singhal, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Haroon Yusuf, Rajkumar Chauhan and East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit. The delegation brought to the notice of the three election commissioners the mistakes found in the electoral rolls of Delhi and sought immediate correction of the errors. The delegation said there were many mistakes in the draft electoral rolls, the photos of many voters were missing, some names were printed wrongly, and photos had also been placed against the wrong names. It pointed out that unless the mistakes in the electoral rolls were corrected immediately, lakhs of people in Delhi would be denied their voting rights in the coming assembly elections, which are to be held after two months. The delegation requested the election commissioners to ensure that the mistakes were rectified on a war footing. Agarwal said the election commissioners gave them an assurance that the mistakes in the electoral rolls would be corrected as quickly as possible and, if necessary, with the deployment of additional staff. He appealed to the voters of Delhi to check their electoral rolls and correct if any mistake had occurred and submit the forms along with photographs for making the photo identity cards. He said the Congress workers were making every effort to ensure that no voter was denied a voter identity card and the mistakes in the electoral rolls were promptly rectified. |
Illegal colonies to get provisional certificates
New Delhi, August 27 Residents of unauthorised colonies are considered vote bank of the Congress. They were not happy with Congress government in Delhi when several unauthorised constructions were demolished by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) last year. Now with the provisional authorization, the Congress is likely to win the heart of these voters, sources said. The RWAs affiliated to the BJP have announced a rally on August 31. They claim that provisional authorisation is just pulling the wool over people’s eyes. The rally will be organised under the umbrella of Unauthorised Colonies Mahasangh that will be led by former union minister Vijay Goel. Goel claimed that there was no provision in the law to issue provisional authorisation certificate to the colonies. According to sources, the government has completed all the formalities and legal procedures to issue provisional certificates to unauthorised colonies. About 1300 colonies will be issued the certificates before the election code of conduct. The election is to be held in November and the code of conduct is enforced two months before poll date. The sources said that a total of 1461 unauthorised colonies were registered with the Delhi government. The RWAs of these colonies submitted all the documents required by the ministry of urban development, Delhi government, for provisional authorisation. Scrutiny showed 161 colonies have more than one RWA and they have submitted the required documents. |
DDA board hears suggestions for Master Plan
New Delhi, August 27 The board of inquiry and hearing of the DDA at its meeting yesterday heard the objections and suggestions and discussed them in detail. The Zone L covers an area of 21933 hectares (ha) which is bound by the Delhi-Rohtak railway line in the north, existing HT line and Zone ‘K’ mainly comprising Dwarka Sub-City in the east and NCTD boundary on its southern and western sides. It comprises 58 villages and one Census Town. According to the DDA, a number of objections/suggestions were regarding land use of various village lands as green. The people of the area said this was not justifiable and instead land should be allowed to be used for setting up public/semi-public facilities etc. and that the owners should be allowed to use some portion of the land as commercial or residential. Another suggestion was regarding making provision for employment and self-employment of villages and to declare commercial land use (belt) according to population and total area of each village after leaving 100 metre green belt surrounding the villages. Other objections/suggestions related to roads which pass through built-up, thickly populated areas and some other roads which need re-alignment. It was also suggested that the existing institutional (religious, cultural, educational etc.) activity in the ZDP should be specifically identified and mentioned in the plan. Development of wholesale market and plots should be entrusted to traders. Sub-category of regional park, district park, playground and historical monument etc. should be specifically identified. It was also suggested that the petrol station sites and industrial clusters with more than 70 per cent industrial unit located and falling in the zone be identified and incorporated in ZDP. The residents of the area also suggested that more sites for sanitary landfill needed to be identified. The lal dora of the villages should also be extended. It is also mentioned that Tikri-Kalan village be declared for commercial ware housing/industrial activities. |
Car damaged as water pipeline bursts
New Delhi, August 27 The incident happened just after labourers had de-silted a drain. The water pipeline was along the side of the wall of the drain. It was an old pipeline and probably damaged. The force of water was so much that it lifted the cherry coloured car parked there, said a labourer on duty. People on the spot did not dare to lift the car from the water as it had fallen in a pit adjacent to the drain. Passersby stopped to see the unusual incident, resulting in a traffic jam. A fire fighter van of the Delhi Fire Service reached the spot after 10 minutes of the incident reported by one of the residents. But the fire service men went back, saying they were helpless. This is the job of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) or the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). An official of the jal board reached the spot after more than hour. Spokesperson of the Delhi Jal Board Sanjan Cheema said it was an old pipeline and there would be some damage in it. Board people were on the job. “This is not an unusual incident. Delhi is a big city. Pipelines are old. Whenever there is some damage, the pipeline bursts,” she said. |

Such a practice should be eradicated. According to the government statistics, an estimated one million dalits in India are manual scavengers. Over 98% scavengers are women. This is when the practice is an offence as per the Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act, 1993. “The government of India has not just missed the mark, but defiantly denies the existence of any such practice. The practice reminds the worst form of caste system in our society,” said Sarika Sinha of ActionAid Bhopal, an NGO that works towards the eradication of the practice.
