With the Congress party preparing for the assembly elections to be held in November this year and various MLAs seeking tickets, its being felt in the political circle that the party would not give tickets to 24 sitting MLAs due to their bad performance. Senior party leaders decided this after election observers talked to the party activists about the image of the candidates, the sources said.

The AICC has appointed four observers to scrutinise the list of ticket seekers.

According to sources, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) has submitted a list of 210 candidates. Three names have been suggested from one constituency.

New Delhi, August 21
Protesting against the Delhi High Court’s verdict convicting senior advocates R.K. Anand and IU Khan in the sensational BMW case, the Delhi Bar Council has declared strike in all the courts in the Capital tomorrow.

The advocates said that the judgment does not confirm to the Advocate’s Act and no court has the right to refrain any advocate from practicing in any court.

“It is the prerogative of the Bar Council only and courts cannot pass any judgment in this regard. After conducting a meeting today, all the Bar Associations in Delhi have declared a strike tomorrow,” said Narender Kumar Sharma, vice-president (criminal), Delhi Bar Association.

Though the advocates believe that the court had a right to convict the advocate duo, they feel that the judgment wandered into the legal sphere of the Bar Council by asking the convicts not to appear in Delhi High Court or any lower court for four months.

“The court can convict anybody but it can not suspend an advocate’s license. The court could have referred the case to the Bar Council. I convened the meeting of all Delhi Bar Associations and we want to show our disapproval by keeping the city courts close for tomorrow,” said Jaiveer Singh Chauhan, hony. secretary, Delhi Bar Association.

The advocates said that this is not the first time that such infringement had happened.

“This is not the first time. There have been several such judgments before this as well. Court cannot tell us if we could practice or not. The court can convict the accused but cannot take our right away from us,” said Dalip Kumar Rana, additional secretary (civil), Delhi Bar Association.

Meanwhile, the advocates are also concerned about the reputation of their profession being damaged by such advocates.

“People like the accused in this case should not be allowed to remain in the profession. It harms the image of our community; we are supposed to uphold the law,” said Rajinder Kumar Sharma, vice-president (civil), Delhi Bar Association.

The Delhi Court recommended that R.K. Anand and I.U. Khan be stripped of their designations as senior advocates. They were also refrained from appearing in Delhi High Court or any other subordinate court for next four months along with the imposition of a fine of Rs 2,000 each.

Music shop raided for piracy

On a tip-off from the Indian Music Industry (IMI), the Delhi police conducted a raid at a music shop in Mohan Budh Nagar, here and seized large number of pirated CDs, MP3s, DVDs and VCDs. The seizure included 1,215 MP3 CDs, 975 film VCDs and 370 film DVDs.

The police recovered MP3s of various hit movies like Race, Omkara, Salam Namaste, Guru and No Entry. Accused Ramesh Kumar has been arrested and a case has been registered against him in the Malviya Nagar police station.

Piracy has been evolving and expanding its footprints in India. According to the IMI, physical format of piracy alone dents a loss of Rs 600 crore annually to the Indian music industry. In addition to this, the music industry is witnessing new formats of piracy such a mobile chip piracy which roughly estimates a loss of another Rs 300 crore.

Commenting on the raid, Savio D’Souza, general secretory, IMI, said, “Delhi has become a hub of piracy, but recent efforts by the police are really commendable. Such raids give a strong message to those indulged in piracy. Indian music industry is suffering from huge losses because of piracy that not only hurts the commercial interests of licensed manufacturers but also has the potential of damaging the country’s economic and social fabric. Such raids not only prove to be a benefit for the industry but also boost the morale of artists.”

JNUSU office-bearers entered the second round of negotiations after the health of the protestors deteriorated on the 13th day of their hunger strike.

“The administration has decided to constitute two separate committees to look into the non-fulfillment of the seats,” said Pallavi Deka, general secretary, JNUSU.

One committee would be set up by the vice-chancellor to look into the implementation of OBC reservation in the university. The second committee would calculate the number of alleged unfulfilled seats under SC, ST and PH categories.

However, no decision was taken for reconsidering the admissions of the present academic year, administration said that the unfulfilled seats if found, would be added in the seats offered to the reserved categories next year.

“The decisions of the committees would be binding on the university as the copy of the report would be sent to the HRD ministry,” said Pallavi.

To ensure that the decisions taken regarding the implementation of OBC quota are legally valid, the university has decided to keep legal experts along with representatives of Office of Equal Opportunities in the committee. JNUSU would also nominate its representatives for the committee.

Meanwhile, the JNUSU is not calling off its agitation. “Even though the hunger strike has been called off, the agitation is still on. Constant pressure has to be put on the administration so that it does not go back on its promises,” said Pallavi.

Gastrointestinal problems rise during rains
Parmindar Singh

Noida, August 21
Gastrointestinal problems have increased tenfold during monsoons in the area. This increase is due to poor civic conditions and lack of awareness among people.

Some 50% of gastro OPD patients suffer from gastroenteritis or diarrhoea, said Dr Ajay Bhalla, head of gastroenterology at Fortis Hospital.

Contaminated water is responsible for the rapid increase in gastro problems during monsoons. Water in Noida is hard, as the amount of magnesium and other minerals is more than normal. If leads to irregular bowel habits.

The other reason for contaminated water is the depletion in the level of ground water as many bore wells have been dug in the area, said Dr Bhalla.

Contaminated water causes many water-borne diseases like acute viral hepatitis (jaundice) and food poisoning. Sewer water gets mixed with the ground water and adds to the plight even more.

Besides, a large number of food establishments do not follow the requisite standard of hygiene in the preparation, storage and distribution of food leading to jaundice and loose motions.

As many BPOs and software companies are located here, the employees are prone to work-related stress, altered sleep cycles, smoking, alcoholism leading to high incidences of acidity and constipation.

Moreover, loadshedding aggravates the situation further and leads to fermentation and poor eating standards.

Gastroenteritis also known as the stomach flu, is an inflation of the gastrointestinal tract, caused by common virus, bacteria and parasites.

Infection by such agents may lead to acute gastroenteritis, cholera and viral hepatitis. The usual symptoms of these disorders are acute diarrhea accompanied by vomiting, abdominal pain and fever, Dr Bhalla said.

Dr Bhalla further informed that worldwide 250 million cases of water-borne diseases are reported every year out of which 5 to 10 million die.

Dr Ajay Bhalla said, “Gastric problems often follow a seasonal trend. Most of the gastric infections burgeon due to the humid weather conditions during the monsoons. This creates an ideal environment for microbial growth spoiling the food articles and water. It thus increases the risk manyfold.”

The total admissions at Fortis Hospital has increased to 18% as compared to less than 5% during winters.

Moreover, 50% of total OPD patients suffer from gastroenteritis or diarrhea.

The number of children suffering from diarrhea has increased to 27% as compared to 2.7% during winters.

Stomach flu often has common symptoms but the infection may become life threatening if it goes uncontrolled.

The best way to combat stomach flu is through personal hygiene, which involves washing of the hands before meals and after going to toilet, added Dr Bhalla.

Three case studies were also presented by Dr Bhogal to drive home the points.

For speedy recovery, ORS solution can be used.

The use of ORS has reduced the mortality rate associated with cholera from more than 50% to less than 1%, informed the doctors.

Dr Bhogal, consultant, gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital said, “Use of various preservatives and junk food also play an important role and their continuous use may increase the risk of gastric cancers to a great extent.”
