UT police to play ‘big brother’ to students

UT cops are all set to don the role of ‘big brothers’ for Panjab University students during the forthcoming elections on September 12. The police want only violence-free elections and the leaders of the different students unions were told about it during the police-student meeting, held recently, said ASP Madhur Verma.

A recent study by the psychiatry department of the GMCH-32 reveals that mental illness is a major issue in the tricity, with over 66,000 persons suffering from it. PUTA to boycott Teachers’ Day celebrations

Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) has decided to observe Teachers’ Day as ‘protest day’ and would be wearing black badges as mark of protest. This was decided during the general body meeting held today.

A third year student of IT in Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology was killed in a clash between two groups of the college yesterday. The deceased has been identified as Gurvinder Singh (25). After spending two years in Australia, he had recently joined the college.

Two killed in accident

Two people were killed in an accident last night as a mini truck rammed into a parked truck near Khanpur. The incident took place at around 1.30 am when the truck carrying bread was moving from Phillaur to Shimla.

2 held with 285 boxes of illicit liquor

The Fatehgarh Sahib police today arrested two persons with 285 boxes of illicit liquor along with a truck. Three of their accomplices, who were helping them in a car, fled from the scene.

IDBI Bank penalised Rs 50,000

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the IDBI Bank to pay Rs 50,000 in compensation to a Sector-35 resident for harassment. The forum has also asked the bank to pay Rs 5,500 as cost of litigation.

The 6th Administrator's Challenge Cup All-India Football Tournament, which started with a bang three days ago, has turned out to be a damp squib. Five teams of the contest failed to show up for their scheduled matches and just in a span of three days, 30 players have been medically declared overage.
