CAIT to observe Aug 9 as Traders’ Day
Traders plan to emerge as powerful vote bank
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 4
Thousands of traders under the banner of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) will hold a rally here and observe August 9 as the Traders’ Day to “restore the dignity and honour” of the trading community.

A spokesman of the traders said that in view of the forthcoming assembly elections in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the traders have decided to transform themselves into a powerful vote bank to pursue their demands.

CAIT Delhi state chairman Murli Mani and president Ramesh Khanna said that the rally will also have its focus on issues related to sealing and entry of big corporate houses into retail trade. A comprehensive trader’s charter will also be released by CAIT national executive president B. C. Bhartia.

Annoyed at the treatment meted out to the trading community, the traders have adopted the slogan ‘Jo vyapari hit ki baat karega- wahi vyaparion ke vote par raj karega’.

It is now certain that traders cannot be taken for granted any more and the united voice of traders is going to play an important role in the forthcoming elections, said the trade leaders.

Terming sealing as one of the major issues, the traders charter will include regularisation of all business establishments that existed as on December 31, 2007 and formation of a panel for speedy regularisation of unauthorised colonies in which lakhs of traders are carrying out their business.

The declaration of special area under Master Plan 2021 as fully commercial area and desealing of shops will also figure in the charter.

Pension to traders over the age of 60 years, formation of a trade commission on the pattern of the Planning Commission and ban on entry of corporate retailers in retail trade are other major issues.

The charter will also demand a trade policy to maintain the centuries old distributive character of Delhi trade and review of all acts, rules and laws concerning domestic trade.

DMC Ordinance approved
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 4
The Delhi Cabinet has approved Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2008, which would be promulgated by the Lt-Governor after obtaining instructions from the President.

Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that an ordinance would be promulgated to make provisions for procedure to be followed by the existing Municipal Taxation Tribunal for disposal of its functions. It has been decided to amend Sections 169, 170 and 171 of the DMC Act, 1957. Section 169 which was first amended in 2003 is being further amended to make provisions for smooth functioning of the Municipal Taxation Tribunal. As no formal provision exists in law with regard to the procedure to be followed by the Tribunal for its functions which are mainly judicial in nature, it is necessary to provide a proper legal back up to the procedure to avoid any legal complications in future.

Amendment to Section 169 would also make provision for appointment of a registrar and other staff for the Tribunal and vesting limited powers of civil court in the Tribunal. A few more amendments of minor character are being effected in Section 170 and 171 of the Act since these are required for the smooth implementation of the Act, she said.

Dikshit’s publicity drive misleading people: Mukhi

New Delhi, August 4
Countering claims of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in a spate of advertisements, Leader of Opposition Jagdish Mukhi on Monday claimed her government was misleading people and misusing taxpayers’ money.

“For the last few months, the Delhi government is spending millions of rupees daily by giving one to two full-page advertisements in various newspapers for the self-praise of Sheila Dikshit,” said Mukhi.

One of the advertisements said 74 percent people in a survey appreciated the functioning of the Delhi Jal Board, the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) leader said, and added: “But people would like to know if it is not true that even after being the DJB chairperson for last 10 years she has failed to provide potable water to more than one-third population of Delhi.”

As for the advertisments’ showing 73 percent people supporting power distribution companies, Mukhi said Dikshit “seemed to have forgotten that during her regime the biggest scam of Rs 12,500 crore (Rs 125 billion) was committed in the privatisation of the Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB)”.

“It is not an allegation, (it is) rather proved by the CAG report and the report of Public Accounts Committee of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. Is it not true that even today unscheduled loadshedding of six to eight hours is being adopted?” he said.

While a Delhi government advertisement said 73 percent people appreciated the law and order in Delhi, the opposition leader said: “This statement through advertisement has put salt on wounds of those young ladies of Delhi who have been raped in the running cars, in the running buses, in the schools, in the offices, in the hospitals and in the temples.”—IANS

Gurudwara panel to examine ‘Singh is Kinng’

New Delhi, August 4
The Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) on Monday formed a three-member committee to screen Akshay Kumar starrer “Singh is Kinng” to see if Sikhs have been portrayed negatively in the film.

“We have formed a three-member committee of experts that will see the movie and based on their feedback further action will be taken,” DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna told IANS. The film is slated for release next Friday.

The DSGMC had sought a ban on the movie last Friday for allegedly “ridiculing” the Sikh community and wrote a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit asking her to ban the film in the national Capital, despite the announcement by the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex religious body of the Sikhs, that it was up to the audiences to decide if they wanted to watch the film.

The DSGMC committee has two granthis (priests) Harnam Singh and Surinder Singh and Khalsa College professor Harmeet Singh, an expert on Sikh history.

Various Sikh organisations have voiced their concern over the film.

Sarna said: “The film’s promos showed a Sikh character wearing a turban, while sporting a French cut. This is not a positive Sikh image. The screening should not be allowed until its makers make changes in the portrayal of Sikh character.”—IANS
