EFC okays seven projects worth Rs 347 crore
New Delhi, July 22 Talking to the media, Delhi finance minister A.K. Walia stated that Rs 126.18 crore has been sanctioned for supply, erection, testing and commissioning with complete civil works at Mundka. The project has been approved to meet the increased power requirements in the areas of West Delhi as well as to provide supply to DMRC for their extension route in West Delhi. It will also meet the requirements of the industrial area being developed in Swarn Park, Udyog Nagar. The project will be executed on turnkey basis within 24 months from the date of award of work. Walia expressed confidence that commissioning would be completed within stipulated time to ensure adequate quality power supply in the area and facilitate plying of Metro Rail. The EFC has also cleared a proposal of PWD for construction of road over bridge (ROB) and road under bridge (RUB) at railway crossing near Nand Nagri in East Delhi with an estimated cost of Rs 107 crore. The project would be executed within 30 months after the award of tender. The minister said that the EFC has sanctioned an amount of Rs 89.03 crore for construction of an RUB at railway crossing between Shalimar Bagh and Azadpur Fruit Mandi to provide free flow of traffic. The project would be completed within 30 months after the award of work. The committee has also given its nod for construction of 1300-meter service road along with Eastern Approach road with side drain and footpath on IT Park with an estimated cost of Rs 4.66 crore. The new service road would provide a connection to a historical temple and facilitate traffic movement of two-wheelers during Commonwealth Games 2010. Walia further stated that an amount of Rs 7.46 crore has been sanctioned for revamping of Najafgarh drain from Amberahi Bridge to Kakraula Bridge. Another sum Rs 3.12 crore has been sanctioned for construction of 15 Type-IV quarters for general pool accommodation at Gulabi Bagh. |
Biker gangs kill and loot at will in Gt Noida
Greater Noida, July 22 A gang had allegedly murdered a cashier of a construction company after looting Rs 5,000 from him on Sunday night in Greater Noida. The only fault of the cashier was that he had resisted the bikers. They had also allegedly assaulted two bank employees and snatched cash from them. Biker gangs, of late, seem to have targeted truck drivers and shopkeepers also. In the second loot on Sunday night, a biker gang allegedly looted Rs 3,000, mobile phones and tractor batteries from truck driver near Habibpur village under Bisarakh police station. In another incident, bikers allegedly assaulted a shopkeeper under Dadri police station, and robbed him of cash, cell phone and valuables. Though in both the cases the victims tried to lodge a complaint with the police, cops say there is something fishy about the complaints. A truck from Sidhu Road Lines reached Habibpur yard with tractors from New Holland Tractor Company on Sunday. Due to congestion in the yard, some trucks were parked on road out side. At about 2 am, four members of a bikers’ gang came and allegedly robbed the driver and conductor at gunpoint. The bikers had looted Rs. 3,000, two cell phones, and batteries of two Holland Tractors. The drivers informed the transport contractor Yog Raj after the bikers had sped away. On Yog Raj’s complaint, Bisarakh police had tried to nab the bikers all night but without any success. In another incident, three gangsters on a bike allegedly robbed a shopkeeper, Rinku, at gunpoint near the branch of State Bank of India, Dadri, of Rs 5,000, cell phone and other valuables at 10 pm. The robbers had beaten up the shopkeeper also. Rinku had gone to lodge a report with Dadri police station. But the police refused to register his complaint.

Carjackers’ gang busted; five cars seized
Noida, July 22 Two of the thieves nabbed are from Kashmir, who had come to buy the stolen cars. According to SP City, the police was tipped off about the cars by an informant. During a vehicle check, four youths were arrested as they could not produce the vehicle documents. During interrogation at police station, they admitted that these cars were stolen from Delhi and being taken to Moradabad. The four arrested were car thieves and buyers of stolen cars. They have been identified as Shamim and Rais, alias Guddu, from Moradabad, Shiekh Saifi and Sahil Altaf Butt from Kashmir. Rais is the kingpin of the gang who used to steal cars from NCR along with his friends and then drive them to Moradabad. He would sell the cars after getting their duplicate documents prepared. The police has recovered two Santro cars, one Honda City, one Accent and one Wagon R from them. Kashmiri youth would buy stolen cars from Rais and then sell them at profit in Kashmir. Apart from North East, the luxury cars are also quite in demand in Jammu and Kashmir these days. Shiekh Saifi and Sahil have palmed off five luxury cars in Jammu and Kashmir which they had taken from Moradabad car thieves.Shiekh Saifi told the police that whenever they get a demand for luxury cars in Kashmir, they sound Rais about it. He steals cars for them and despatches them after getting their documents made. |
16 vehicles recovered from thieves
New Delhi, July 22 The police got a breakthrough on July 14 near G B Pant Polytechnic College in Okhla area when a white Maruti car bearing Regn. No. DL-4CQ-0532 was signalled to stop at the barricade. Instead of stopping, the driver tried to negotiate the barricade and speed off. The alert staff intercepted the vehicle and the driver was asked to show the documents of the car, but he failed to do so. On enquiry from the Automatch section, it was revealed that the vehicle was stolen from Lodhi Colony. Accused Brahmanand was arrested and interrogated at length. He disclosed that he is a school dropout who came in contact with the autolifters Mustkim and Tony of distt. Bulandshahar, U.P. and involved himself in autolifting with them. Later, he formed his own gang with Khem Chand and Shahzad, and started stealing vehicles at different places in and around Delhi. They disposed them of in small cities adjoining Delhi. Regular raids were conducted at the possible hideouts of the other accused and the duo were apprehended from Bulandshahar, UP. Fifteen more stolen vehicles including one Maruti-800 car, eight Maruti vans, one Indica, one Santro, one Matiz and three motorcycles were recovered at their instance from different places in and around Delhi. Accused Brahmanand is also a history sheeter of Agota police station in Bulandshahar. |
2 brothers attacked, looted of cash
New Delhi, July 22 The bothers, Ateeq (38) and Shafeeq (30), were admitted to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where their condition was described as serious. The police said a case had been registered and efforts were on to trace the suspects. The incident occurred around 6 am when the brothers who deal in potatoes were on their way to the Ram Nagar Subzi Mandi on motor cycle. The three suspects, also on a motor cycle, intercepted the two and after firing at them escaped with the money. The early morning incident created panic among the traders who were on their way to the mandi to buy vegetables for the day. Meanwhile, the police is hunting for the desperadoes who have been striking at will all over the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The police said that it was possible that several gangs were operating in the city with the same modus operandi. |

2 robbers arrested with stolen car
New Delhi, July 22 An Accent car used in the commission of the offence, one country made pistol, 2 live cartridges, Rs 3,500 cash and one mobile phone looted from the complainant have been recovered from them. The gang had looted Rs 20,000 from a grocery shop in Dilshad Garden on July 20. The arrests were made on the basis of secret information. Yesterday, constable Sukhbir with the Seema Puri police station had learnt that two criminals would pass through 70’ Road in an Accent car. A police team was put up at the road. Around 8 p.m. an Accent car with two persons was spotted. The car was stopped and the occupants were asked about the documents of the car but they could not produce any paper. On strict questioning, the duo confessed that they had stolen the car from the area of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad. On verification, it was confirmed that an Accent car had been stolen from the said area about 2-3 days ago. The duo also confessed to have committed robbery in the area of Gokal Puri and looted a petrol pump in the month of February 2008. |

1 held for killing driver
New Delhi, July 22 The body of Sher Bahadur Singh has been sent for a post-mortem examination. Another person has also been detained in this connection. According to the police, Sher Bahadur Singh, his relative Manukalika Singh and Dhanwant were having a drinking session in the basement of the building when a minor quarrel ensued. Dhanwant reportedly then whipped out a countrymade gun and fired three shots at Sher
Bahadur. All shots went through his chest. The suspect is then reported to have brandished the weapon and threatened some other employees of the newspaper. The police was informed and the suspect taken into custody. A case of murder had been registered and further investigations continuing into the incident. |

2 women held for picking pockets in bus
New Delhi, July 22 According to DCP/North office, while the complainant Naseem Ahmed was travelling in a Blueline bus plying from Kashmiri Gate bus terminus, 4-5 women boarded the bus. These women allegedly stole Rs 1,520 from his pocket. But Ahmed got suspicious and raised an alarm. The two were caught with the help of co-passengers, however, the other three managed to escape. No recovery was effected. Efforts are afoot to locate the absconding accused women. |
DU anti-smoking drive gets full marks
New Delhi, July 22 DUSU had organized a programme at the varsity on Tuesday to push for a ‘smoke-free campus’ and Ramadoss was the chief guest along with other dignitaries like Dr PC Jain, principal SRCC, ACP Vimlesh Yadav, and others. A ‘Nukkad Natak” was also organized on the occasion. Ramadoss announced before the audience that, “Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has assured that before the Commonwealth Games, NCT of Delhi will be a completely smoke-free capital. The government of India has decided to take the initiative from October 2, 2008 on Gandhi Jayanti to launch the anti-tobacco campaign. Legal Regulation of Anti-Tobacco Law will also be enforced across India.” The minister added, “Nobody can smoke actively and passively in public and private buildings. Nobody can even smoke and chew tobacco in their house without taking permission from their family members.” He said that within a month, students on campus at DU would be provided with a rehabilitation centre. DUSU president Amrita Bahari has been demanding a rehabilitation centre for sometime and has placed the request before the ministry also. Besides, she has urged the Delhi Police not to smoke on campus while on duty. |

New Delhi, July 22 The exhibition spanning 15 days will be held consecutively in all the Amity International Schools, including Noida, East Delhi, Pushp Vihar and Gurgaon, for two days each. “Vasudha” would conclude on August 1, with an exhibition at Amity International School, East Delhi. M.Phil. admissions: DU to discuss changes
New Delhi, July 22 The UGC issued a letter to all universities dated January 31, 2008, stating that, “the informal methods which are used currently in some of the universities for admissions, need to be discontinued and admission methods to these high-level research courses should be made formal and transparent”. The proposed changes have many amendments to the current system, say Academic Council members. The composition of the Board of Research Studies (BRS), which is the final authority to ratify or confirm registration, may also be changed. |
Hospital gets NABL accreditation
New Delhi, July 22 Set up under the aegis of department of science and technology and registered under the Societies Act, NABL is the sole accreditation body for testing and calibration laboratories in the country. It sets guidelines which have to be followed strictly before any organisation is given the accreditation.
