Custodial Deaths
Chandigarh, June 4 Besides DGP Laxman Singh and inspector Nar Singh, the others allegedly involved in the “murder” of Jitender Pahal and Rajiv Singh are SP Ved Prakash, ASI Mangat Singh, head constable Ramesh and constable Subey Singh. Interestingly, some of the defence witnesses listed to be summoned were initially cited by the CBI as prosecution witnesses, but were not examined. The court of Sessions Judge B.M. Bedi today adjourned the case for summoning of witnesses for June 7. According to the prosecution, Jitender Pahal of Jind and his brother Rajiv Singh, a resident of Sonepat, were allegedly murdered in the custody of the CIA staff on October 25, 1994. The two were taken to the Butana canal for recovery in the case against them, where they were shot dead. The inspector, who lead the police party, got an FIR lodged at a police station in Baroda on the way back from the place of recovery to Jind against some unknown persons stating that they allegedly attacked the police party, resulting in the death of the two. Meanwhile, Ishwarti Devi, mother of the duo, filed a petition seeking a CBI probe in 1996 that was allowed. The CBI examined 95 witnesses whereas the investigating agency had cited 187 witnesses. The CBI had called the complainant, Ishwarti Devi, to the court and the request was accepted by the court, but she did not depose before the court as she is herself a proclaimed offender in a murder case. |

Faridabad, June 4 Former leader of the BJP in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha Krishanpal Gurjar and senior leader of the INLD Moolchand Sharma said the negative effect of the price rise would be more visible in this industrialised city. Gurgaon corpn imposes
2 pc stamp duty
Gurgaon, June 4 This was disclosed by the first commissioner of the MCG, Rajeev Sharma, today while interacting with mediapersons after joining as the commissioner of the corporation. He said the corporation had already written to the collector and Gurgaon deputy commissioner Rakesh Gupta in this regard. The declaration of the municipal council as the Municipal Corporation had virtually marked a new beginning of development of the city that had seen a phenomenal growth in recent years. It has also turned a new chapter for the development-starved 54 villages included in its jurisdiction. These villages come under Badashahpur, Sohna, Pataudi and Gurgaon assembly constituencies. It is an equally heartening news for residents of a number of private residential colonies as those living in their own houses there will not be required to pay maintenance charges being paid by them to the developers of the colonies so far. However, those who have rented out their houses will be liable to pay the house tax in compliance with the government rules. The stamp duty will bring parity in the duty paid on the transactions sealed in areas under the previous MC limits. As the nitty-gritty of the day-to-day running of the MCG is still in process, the new commissioner has a challenging task ahead, but he felt that his experience of being commissioner, Gurgaon division, before his new assignment would be helpful. Listing his priorities, Sharma said to provide adequate drinking water facilities, proper sanitation, repair of roads and streets and tackling the menace of stray cattle were some of the most important tasks before him. He said a demand for issuing budget to the corporation would be sent to the government after preparing the detailed outline about requirement of staff, technical officers and office space. Sharma said the declaration of the municipal council, Gurgaon, as the Municipal Corporation Gurgaon would automatically lead to the dissolution of the council and the end of the period of elected representatives. Meanwhile, D.P.S. Naggal today joined as the new commissioner of Gurgaon division. He took over the charge from Rajeev Sharma. Naggal was earlier the deputy commissioner of Sonepat district. He had also served as DC, Panipat. |

It has been decided that unmarried daughters beyond the age of 25 years would be eligible for family pension on a par with widowed and divorced daughters.
