Gurgaon, November 23 The enforcement department sealed all shops and offices in the basement and in passages of the malls. The team also removed all hoardings around the malls. At Metropolitan Mall, the team sealed the office of the management of the mall and the shops in its basement. The team sealed the gallery of Shopper Stop in the basement for not leaving adequate space for the movement of customers. The team then checked Sahara Mall where it sealed the offices and shops being run in the basement. The team also sealed the back-door entry of the food bazar and big bazar at the mall. It also got vacated the passage of the mall by removing all shops being run from there. The enforcement team also removed all hoardings put outside MGF Magni City, DT Mall, Grand Plaza and also from the road adjacent to the malls. Talking to mediapersons, the DTP (enforcement), Gurgaon, Madhu Smita, who was heading the team, said the malls had been given notices to rectify these violations and remove the hoardings, but they did not pay heed. She said owners used the passage of malls to accommodate eating joints, which caused inconvenience to customers visiting the malls. She said though special instructions had been given to use the basement area for parking only, yet a majority of the managements of the malls had opened their offices in that area. She said offices of the managements of all five malls were sealed and instructions were given to them to clear all violations. She said cases would be registered against the mall managements for the violations. |
SYL Canal
Chandigarh, November 23 Representatives of Punjab themselves put a question mark on the Termination of Agreements Act by allowing the CWC to go into the issue of the SYL canal also. So far the stand of Punjab had been that after the enactment of the controversial act, the issue of the SYL canal was closed. The CWC has been asked by the Supreme Court to go into the technical aspects of the objections to the Hansi-Butana canal raised by Punjab and Rajasthan and submit its report by next month. It held a meeting with representatives of all three states in Delhi yesterday. Punjab secretary of irrigation Suresh Kumar wanted the CWC to go into the issue of the Dashmesh canal also. He said if the Dashmesh canal could not be built, then the Hansi-Butana canal could also not be constructed and linked to the Bhakra Main Line canal because both canals constituted the inter-state rivers water dispute. His Haryana counterpart R.N. Prashar opposed the plea, saying that the Dashmesh canal issue could not be looked into by the CWC unless it also went into the issue of the SYL canal because the former would take off only from the latter. Informed sources said when Suresh Kumar said the SYL issue could not be raised before the commission because Haryana had not raised it before the apex court, Prashar lost his cool and reportedly remarked that “Punjab officers do not read all papers before coming to the commission.” He showed his state’s brief before the apex court to his colleague from Punjab, in which Haryana had raised the SYL issue. At this Suresh Kumar reportedly consented to the CWC going into the SYL issue also along with that of the Dashmesh canal. The sources said the CWC members were upset over the allegations of bias levelled against the commission by Punjab. Suresh Kumar tried to placate them by saying that he never leveled these allegations. It was his Chief Minister who alleged that. Prashar had a dig on him when he remarked: “Is the Chief Minister not a part of Punjab?” The sources said tempers ran high between the representatives of Punjab and Haryana more than once during the meeting. |
Women drivers for BPO staff
Gurgaon, November 23 The announcement was made at the meeting under the banner of BPO News Coffee Un'Conference which was also attended by Gurgaon police commissioner Mahendra Lal. The commissioner said before the pilot project was started the safety of women drivers would have to be addressed. However, ensuring the safety of women drivers when they return after dropping the employees is a major concern. Deepak Kapoor, former spokesman of the Call Centre Association of India, said the project would be executed under the guidance of a team of senior women executives from the BPO industry to ensure that all safety issues were taken care off. He said there had been immense support to the initiative and it would start in 10 days. The women drivers would get training from a reputed government approved institute, he added. It was stated in the meeting that for the safety of women drivers there could be a provision of deploying women security guards in the cabs. Although the proposal has found many takers in the industry, yet they are skeptical of its success. Vibhu Narayan, head of infrastructure (NCR) of Genpact, said it was a good initiative. However, the question is whether they will get enough women drivers and can they manage their safety and security. “When we are worried of the women employees’ safety, then we will have to address the safety of women drivers also,” he added A major cab service provider, Manav Bahri, said they had started a similar trial two years ago to get women drivers to pick up and drop women foreigners, but it did not work. The intention was positive and it would be a success only when the safety concern of women drivers was addressed, he pointed out. A “women-only cab service with women-chauffeurs” was started by Revathi Roy in March this year in Mumbai. She plans to start operations in Delhi soon. |
BSNL launches schemes for mobile users
Fatehabad, November 23 Divisional engineer telecom R.K. Bisla told mediapersons here today that the BSNL had started a scheme of caller user group (CUG) for journalists, whereby all journalists of the state could talk free with each other by becoming members of the scheme. For this they will have to pay a nominal rental of Rs 250 per month for which he would get free talk time of Rs 100 per month. The call rates in this plan had been kept affordable with the local calls on the GSM mobiles at 40p per minute, to landline and WLL at 55p per minute and to inter circle phones at Rs 1.50 per minute. The BSNL had slashed the rates of short message services (SMS) to 50 per cent for all SMS done between 11pm to 5am. Similarly, the pulse rates of all calls made during these night hour would be 120 seconds instead of the normal 60 seconds. During the morning hours too, the pulse rate had been increased to 90 seconds instead of 60 seconds. Bisla said the nigam had also decided to reconnect the disconnected telephones without any fees to attract its old users. |

Rallies keep villagers hooked
Hisar, November 23 The first of the series will be held at Bhiwani on November 28, which will be addressed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. It is being organised in memory of late Surinder Singh, son of former Chief Minister Bansi Lal and husband of tourism minister Kiran Chaudhry. Next will be the much publicised rally of rebel Congress MP Kuldeep Bishnoi, son of former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, at Rohtak on December 2. Bishnoi has claimed that it would be the biggest political show in Haryana in recent times. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is likely to address a rally at Fatehebad in January. Fatehabad is represented in the state Assembly by Bhajan Lal’s nephew Dura Ram, who is now parliamentary secretary. Sonia Gandhi’s Bhiwani visit is widely seen as a clear signal to Congressmen that the party would do all it can to ensure the defeat of Bishnoi in the next Lok Sabha poll whenever it takes place. Since the visit comes within weeks of Sonia addressing a rally at Jhajjar, it certainly indicates the top party leadership’s desire to maintain the party’s popularity under Hooda. Congress legislators and ministers in districts around Bhiwani are busy holding meetings to exhort party supporters to attend the rally. Housing minister Savitri Jindal held a similar meeting here today. District Congress chief Chhattarpal Singh had addressed workers yesterday. In Bhiwani, Kiran Chaudhry and her daughter Shruti are leaving no stone unturned to make the rally a success. Bishnoi’s supporters have been busy drumming up support for their leader. Vehicles have been hired already from Rajasthan and Punjab to ferry supporters to Rohtak. Helicopters have also been hired for the event to oversee traffic on the roads and to shower flower petals on the participants. ‘Halwa’ is planned to be served to all those who attend the rally. Though the Fatehabad rally will be smaller in scale to the other proposed rallies, but people of the area are evincing great interest in the show as it will further deepen the divide in the Bhajan Lal family and that too publicly on a political platform. The hectic political activity in the countryside has given enough material to villagers to analyse the likely effects of these rallies on the political fortunes of major players. Groups of villagers can be seen in every village chaupal throughout the day animatedly discussing politics. The visits by supporters of different parties and leaders only add to the interest. Haryana’s farmers are known to be very politically savvy. Already they have booked their berths in the buses that will carry them to the rally of their choice. In many cases they plan to attend all rallies, which is certain to confuse the organisers. |

State’s connection with Jalaludin Rumi
Chandigarh, November 23 The second connection was established today, with the Haryana Urdu Akademi joining hands with the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the department of Persian, Delhi University, to celebrate the 800th birth anniversary of Rumi, to whose memory UNESCO has dedicated this year. For the invocation of Rumi’s message, the setting was perfect - the serene conference hall of Haryana Raj Bhawan, where Indian and other Persian scholars from Turkey, Iran and the UK assembled for the celebrations. Leading them was Koroosh Safavi, a linguistics expert from Tabtabai University, Tehran, who set the tone for discussions by highlighting the stylistic markers of Rumi’s texts. Safavi, however, confessed that Rumi (who lived mainly in Konya, Turkey) was little understood in Iran. “Rumi’s works have gained importance in places where strife has ruled. He is very popular in the western world, where people are seeking spiritual texts to liberate themselves from suffering. Rumi provides that text. In Iran, not many people know him; Hafiz is better known,” Safavi told The Tribune, explaining why the world was increasingly reverting to Rumi. During the inaugural session today, repeated mention was made of “Mathanawi”, Rumi’s momentous mystical work. “Mathanawi contains the crux of Rumi’s poetic spiritual influences being felt by people of diverse beliefs. It literally means “two-parted text”,” said Safavi. Haryana is duty-bound to organise another seminar in Kalandar’s memory, Quasemi urged Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai. The Haryana government was represented by education minister Mange Ram Gupta, who faulted in his opening remarks when he welcomed the dead Maulana Rumi along with other dignitaries. He rushed to rectify the mistake by reciting Sanskrit shlokas to drive home the point that God was one - a message central to Rumi’s philosophy. “Rumi was an ardent mystic; a thirst that could never be quenched, a reformist who feared no one,” said Abdolhamid Ziaei, director of Iran Culture House. Even in the east, interest in Rumi’s philosophy is hugely growing. Indian filmmaker Muzaffar Ali is working on a film on Rumi; Pakistan’s Sufi singer Abida Parveen routinely sings Rumi’s praises. For Haryana, thus, a discussion on Rumi could not have come at a better time. Especially because this year Haryana is planning to preserve the memory of another of its saint poets — Hali Panipati, whose ancestral house it is acquiring for conversion into a girls’ school. |

Telecom company found at fault
Ambala, November 23 It has come to light that at least 51 mobile connections have been issued against incomplete documentation. This is a matter of concern as strict directions have already been given by the government to telecom operators and their dealers to issue mobile connections only after proper verification of documents. Deputy commissioner Mohammad Shayin has taken a serious note of this lapse and has ordered complete verification of the new mobile phone users. The lapse has been found for one mobile telecom company. “The telecom operator has been granted two days’ time to produce complete documents of the users to whom mobile connections were issued without proper papers. Cross-checking of the new users will be carried out,” he said. He said if the telecom company did not provide the complete documents on time, stringent action would be initiated against them. “It is a major lapse and suitable action will be taken in this matter,” he added. During the early years of mobile telephony, considerable stress had not been laid on giving complete documents, including identity card for getting new mobile connections. To meet business targets, dealers were earlier known to hand over new mobile connections without seeking proper identification. However, all that changed following the misuse of mobile phones by terrorist organisations. Terrorists are not only known for using mobiles for keeping in touch with each other, in a more deadly use, mobile phones are used for triggering bomb blasts. Mobiles are attached to the explosive device and a terrorist can trigger the bomb blast by dialling up the mobile phone from any place. This has led to much stricter norms being issued by the government for ensuring that mobile phones are not misused. |
