Overflowing canal causes breach
Yamunanagar, August 3 Officials of the canal department, however, clarified that the canal was safe and discharge in the canal from the Hathnikund barrage has been reduced so that overflowing could be stopped. Discharge in the canal was more than 15,500. Officials were facing problems in repairing the breach as it was difficult to press in earth moving machines. Officials were trying to bring in labourers and villagers were helping officials in their efforts, said sources. Executive engineer of canal department O.P Nagpal claimed water would not enter villages as water discharge in the canal has been reduced. |

Dera chief to be served summons
Sirsa, August 3 It is learnt that the dera chief is likely to be served summons in the cases either on August 5 or 6. The Ambala court had issued summons to dera chief to appear in the court on August 31, taking note on the three reports filed by the CBI against him. Meanwhile, the dera chief today cancelled his scheduled visit to Uttar Pradesh to address the religious discourse to be held on August 5. The dera chief had to leave for UP in early morning. As a result a large number of police personnel were deployed on the roads since 5.30 am and security personnel were also alerted. The reason of the cancel of the dera chief visit was not ascertained yet. In murder cases against the dera chief, Khatta Singh, turned out to be the star-witness for
the CBI. Khatta Singh in his statements alleged that the dera chief had ordered his confidants (dera men) to kill Ranjeet Singh
and Chhatrapati. Ranjeet Singh was murdered as he was suspected to circulate the anonymous letter of the
Sadhvi, who had levied serious allegations of sexual exploitations of Sadhvis by the dera chief. Chhatrapati was murdered as he had published news about Sadhvis exploitation by the dera chief in his evening newspaper “Poora Sach”. Two Sadhvis had recorded their statements under Section 164, CrPC, accusing the dera chief of committing rape. Besides it, two more Sadhvis recorded their statements before the CBI under
Section 161 of the CrPC levelling the allegations of the rape against the dera chief. |

Dera postpones ‘naam charcha’
Fatehabad, August 3 With the postponement of the ‘naam charcha’, the possibilities of a conflict between the Sikhs and the dera followers has been averted as both the sides had been sticking to their guns earlier. While the dera followers had announced ‘naam charcha’, the Sikh organisations had announced that they would not allow it to take place. The authorities have sent back all companies of paramilitary forces except one company each of the border security force and the central reserve police force, which, SP Saurabh Singh said would be sent back after the Independence Day. The district had summoned nine companies of the paramilitary forces in the wake of panthic sammelan at Ratia last month. The management of the Dera Sacha Sauda deferred the ‘naam charcha’ proposed for August 5, after the meeting with a peace committee from the district at Sirsa last evening. |
Members of managing bodies:No entry during college hours
Hisar, August 3 In his communication to presidents of managing bodies of such colleges sent on July 24, HEC has said reports indicated that members of managing bodies and office-bearers had been frequenting the college premises during working hours affecting teaching and administrative work. He has asked the presidents of managing bodies to direct all other office-bearers and members to approach the principals or other staff for any work either before or after working hours only so as to maintain discipline in the colleges. It is learnt that the step has been taken as principals and other teaching and non-teaching employees of these colleges had been complaining that members of management committees spend a lot of time on the college premises on one pretext or the other during working hours affecting studies as well as functioning of the college as a whole. Reports indicated that many office-bearers had even allotted themselves office rooms in the college premises and many spent the entire day in the college itself. This was particularly so in the case of retired persons or those who had no other business to attend to than the college affairs. In many cases the managements had appointed retired teachers or close relatives of office-bearers as self-styled directors of privately managed affiliated aided colleges. They had even usurped the powers and responsibilities of principals. Significantly, there is no such post in any college provided under the relevant act which governs constitution of managing bodies of such colleges. The trend was started by DAV Colleges which then percolated down to other institutions as well. In many cases, these directors are also drawing remuneration from managing committees. Still others have been provided with chauffeur driven cars as well as the expense of the college concerned. Although the recent communication is expected to effectively end undue interference by members of managing bodies in the day to day functioning of these colleges, Principals of DAV Colleges fear that this may not bring much relief to them as their colleges have two bodies each. One is the managing body constituted under the relevant act and the other is the self-styled Delhi-based managing committee which rules the roost in these colleges. |
5 mango merchants killed in road mishap
Yamunanagar, August 3 Condition of the injured was said to be serious. Mustakin (35), Shahjad (20), Shahid Ahmad (22), Iqfal (22) and Irshad (35) were killed on the spot, while Mohd Irshad and Intzar were injured seriously. The truck driver (a resident of Indri, Karnal) fled from the spot. The road on which the accident took place is not suitable for heavy vehicles but drivers choose this route instead of the Chandigarh-Roorkie road to save on 5 km and police pickets, said police sources. The administration has banned heavy vehicles on the road as a bridge near Fathepur is not safe. Police sources said as it was raining the merchants had covered the rear of the truck with a tarpaulin. The merchants who were killed were sitting at the rear atop cartons of mangoes. The injured were sitting along with the driver in the cabin. When the truck reached the old Saharanpur road, one of its wheel got sturck in mud and the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck fell into the pond. The police reached the spot in time but merchants could not be taken out alive. Mohd Irshad said that the nylon ropes with which tarpaulin was tied could not be unwinded in time. The bodies were handed over to family members after a post-mortem examination. |

The first cheque Mullana has signed as the PCC president is for making payments for a Camry, a luxury Sedan manufactured by the Japanese auto giant Toyota. “ The PCC chief intends to travel a lot”, confided an aide here. He added that Mullana wanted to visit all the districts of Haryana during the intervening period between his appointment as the PCC president and his formally taking over the office here on August 7. The programme had to be dropped, as the local legislators reportedly wanted him to visit their areas after he formally took over the charge of the
PCC chief. “After the August 7 function he is expected to tour various parts of the state and meet district Congress committee chiefs and other party workers”, said a source here. It was learnt that a Contessa car, meant for use by the PCC president, ran its capacity and was later sold off to a buyer. Another car, a Toyota Qualis, also belonging to the PCC, was extensively used by Bhajan Lal when he was the chief of the PCC, for carrying the NSG commandos who accompanied him everywhere. “The Qualis is not fit for long travel any more”, the source said. Ram Prakash got himself an SUV (Endevour) after becoming the working president of the party. The SUV, however, was not provided by the party and therefore, there was no question of his returning it to the PCC after his removal from the post of working president. |
