Free transport for pregnant women to clinics planned
Gurgaon, August 2
The project for the safe transportation of pregnant women to medical institutes or delivery hut for delivering child has been approved by the Government of India for Mewat, the most backward district of the state. Haryana will be the first state in the country to introduce such a project for pregnant women. A round-the-clock control room will be set up at Nuh, which will have seven specially designed vehicles for taking such women. Initially, nine delivery centres will be set up under the project at various places in Mewat, which includes Government Hospital, Mandikhera, Community Health Centres at Puhana, Ferozpur Jhirka, Nuh, Hathin, and primary health centres at Taoru, Mandkola, Pingawana and Nagina. All these centres will be connected with the control room, which will be have one computer having the map of whole district, including the details of roads and villages of the district to locate the residence of the patient easily. The toll free number of the control room will be 102, which will be managed by four control room operators. The operators on receiving a call from the pregnant women will contact the drivers of the vehicles and guide them in locating the address of the patient. Mewat Hospital Civil Surgeon Dr D.V. Saharan informed that there were about 40,000 pregnant women in Mewat district, out of which only 2,000 women have been registered with the government hospitals. Ignorance and lack of education were the main reasons for women not availing advanced medical facilities in the hospitals of the district. With the commencement of this new project, many pregnant women’s lives will be saved, he said. He said most of the pregnant ladies prefer to get the deliveries of their child in villages, which, in turn, has resulted in increase in the infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality rate (MMR).The project will help in reducing infant and maternal mortality rate in the district. Saharan further said that transportation facility to pregnant women will also help in providing better pre-delivery services and post natal care. At present, the facility of deliveries were available at Government Hospital, Mandikhera, Primary Health Centres at Taoru and Mandkola and at seven delivery huts at various places in the district. These delivery huts were set up by the state government in 2005 for facilitating proper delivery services to pregnant women of the area. |
Health Dept’s novel method to control malaria
Jind, August 2
It will provide people, especially those living in rural areas, with the facility of getting their curtains and bed clothes laced with anti-malaria liquid, deltamethrin. The liquid will keep the mosquitoes and houseflies away from the spot for a period of about six months. It is for the first time that this kind of experiment was taken up on a large-scale in any district. The drug is non-polluting, odourless and harmless to human beings, doctors claimed. A total of about 3,538 malaria cases surfaced in Jind district till July this year. The programme of checking malaria with the help of deltamethrin drug was formally launched by deputy commissioner at Igrah village, here, recently. The villagers were asked to get their household curtains and bed sheets laced with this special drug to control malaria. It was stated that a team of the health department would visit each village of the various subdivisions in the next one month to provide the facility to the people at their doorstep. According to the department, the team would dip the clothes in a liquid having this drug and it would be done free of cost. A total of about 56 villages would be covered in the next 30 days besides the slum type of localities in the urban pockets. Though residents in rural areas hardly use door or window curtains, it was stated that it could promote such a habit and an overall awareness about the disease, as the facility was being provided at doorstep and free of cost. The department has also started releasing a special breed of fish named Gambuzia in the ponds and open water bodies in both rural and urban areas. This fish according to the experts stop the breeding of mosquitoes in the water as it eats up the eggshell at the breeding stage. Several such fish have been released already by the department in village ponds. Jind is the only district in Haryana which has seven fish hatcheries. According to the malaria department, while the total number of malaria cases this year had declined in a majority of blocks, the number had gone up in Ujjana and Uchana blocks. |

Consumer forum penalises
rly board chief
Rewari, August 2 Simultaneously while imposing a fine of Rs 2,000 on each of the four respondents, the District Consumer Forum (DCF) has issued warrants of arrest to be executed through the superintendent of police, Rewari, by August 10. As per the records of the DCF, it all began on May 29, 2000, when a petition was filed by Sat Narain Singhal, a senior citizen of the town, who sought a decree against the respondents, by whose “wrongful” orders the railway authorities had been charging full fare of an Express train from the passengers who travelled from Rewari to Delhi by the Haryana Express, which stopped at almost all stations and which, therefore, ought to have been treated as a passenger train for all intents and purposes. In its order, which was delivered on June 12, 2001, the DCF, while fully concurring with the petitioner’s plea, directed the respondents to reimburse the additional fare of Rs 14 (wrongfully charged from the petitioner) as well as to pay a compensation of Rs 100 to the petitioner within two months. Instead of complying with the DCF’s order, the respondents challenged it in the court of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (SCDRF), Chandigarh, which, while upholding the DCF’s order, dismissed their petition on April 8, 2002.
