JNU students go on hunger strike
New Delhi, June 24 The protest was launched last night by the JNU Students Union with ten members, including its president Dhananjay Tripathi and Secretary Sandeep Singh, sitting on a hunger strike after organising a march in the campus. The JNUSU strike comes in the wake of the varsity rusticating seven students for separate terms and imposing a fine of Rs 2,000 on three leaders for allegedly ‘gheraoing’ Registrar Avais Ahmed on February 19 during a protest demanding minimum wages for daily workers. The campus has been declared ‘out of bounds’ for another student who has already completed her course. “By taking severe action against student activists who were fighting for minimum wages for contract labourers, the administration has shown scant regard for the democratic opinion of the entire student community,” Tripathi said. He said the students’ union is demanding immediate reversal of these punishments. Singh claimed that the JNU administration was paying only Rs 80 to contractual labourers instead of the minimum wage of Rs 158 as stated by the government. “We are being victimised for raising genuine issues,” he alleged. The 11 students along with four staff association members were suspended in February after the gherao. University officials said disciplinary action comes in the backdrop of the student’s misbehaviour with the Registrar and not for raising issues regarding daily wagers. |

AIIMS former director summoned in
New Delhi, June 24 Metropolitan Magistrate A K Chaturvedi on Saturday issued summons for July 14 to Dr S K Kacker, former AIIMS director and member secretary of the selection committee in 1993. The court took cognisance of the complaint filed by Dr Anoop Saraya, who had alleged that Kacker in connivance with Rakesh K Tandon, then head of department (Gastroenterology), had deliberately forged minutes of the selection committee meeting and deleted his name from the waiting list, in which he was mentioned at the top. Saraya, who was interviewed by the selection committee for the post of assistant professor in the Gastroenterology Department of the Institute on July 20, 1993, further alleged that the accused had maliciously interpolated the name of a less qualified doctor in the list. The complaint had alleged that Dr Kacker had prepared a ‘forged’ document in August 1996, which was placed before the governing body in which only the names of the two candidates were mentioned and his name, as the waitlisted candidate, was ‘deliberately removed’. Even as the name of one of the two selected doctors was not approved by the Governing Body, Saraya could not make it to the list of candidates as his name had already been omitted. The matter came to light when the complainant was offered the post of assistant professor at AIIMS in February 1996, which was challenged by a candidate who also had appeared for the interview along with Saraya in 1993. During the court proceedings, the counsel for the institute said that Dr Kacker had tampered with the records of the selection committee. Saraya then filed a complaint against Kacker and Tandon in the Defence Colony Police Station on February 29, 1996, accusing them of forgery and cheating. |

Stroke main cause of disability
New Delhi, June 24 There is an upward growth curve in the trends of stroke incidence in the developing countries. Stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is disrupted and brain cells lose their supply of nutrients. If this problem is not fixed within hours, brain cells die. This is also sometimes called brain attack. It is very difficult to identify the symptoms of stroke due to a number of reasons. Common symptoms of stroke, however, include abrupt onset of headache followed by unilateral weakness, sensory loss or clumsiness. Slurring of speech or difficulty in expressing or comprehending speech can also indicate a stroke. Double vision, painless blurring of vision or loss of vision in one eye can also suggest a particular type of stroke. Some of the factors that can be modified to reduce the risk of stroke are tobacco use, diabetes mellitus, carotid or other artery disease, high blood pressure, transient ischemic attacks, certain blood disorders, sickle cell disease, high blood cholesterol physical inactivity and obesity. |
