Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 23
Delhi Chief Minister and Delhi Jal Board chairperson Ms Sheila Dikshit today inaugurated an underground reservoir of one lakh gallon capacity and a ‘chaupal’ at Basant Gaon near Vasant Enclave in South Delhi.

The Chief Minister reiterated commitment of her government to provide drinking water facility to all the residents for which it was trying to obtain raw water from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It is expected to get raw water from Renuka Dam in Himachal Pradesh. There is bound to be substantial improvement in water supply position in coming years.

She further exhorted people to avoid wastage of drinking water as it was much precious. Ms Dikshit added that her government was also committed to provide better amenities in rural and urbanised villages. New Chaupal at Basant Gaon would facilitate in organising social and community functions. This has been constructed at a cost of Rs 35 lakh.

Referring to overall development, which has taken place in Delhi, the chief minister said that women of Delhi were now ready to march forward with enhanced confidence as they were competent and efficient.

Basant Village is an urbanised village, which is situated adjacent to Vasant Vihar. The undulating, rocky terrain of the area, resulting in ground level differences among the various pockets of this village, makes providing equitable water supply a challenging task. However, due to its prime location the density of population in this area has increased manifold over a period, resulting in rise in demand of water.

To improve the water supply position, the DJB has constructed an additional underground reservoir with booster pumping station of one lakh gallon capacity and has laid one kilometer long water pipeline dedicated for Basant Village at an estimated cost of Rs 80 lakh. The newly constructed reservoir has enhanced the existing storage capacity from 50,000 gallons to 1.50 lakh gallons.

11 JNU students face punitive action
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 23
Serious action has been taken against 11 students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) by the administration. The decision was taken yesterday evening to rusticate four students for four semesters, two students for two semesters and one student has been directed to be out of bounds of the campus. Three Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union (JNUSU) office-bearers have been asked to deposit Rs 2,000 each as fine. The notice came after the proctorial committee deposited its report against 11 students who were initially served show cause notices.

"It was the decision of the general body meeting not to comply with the proctorial committee. We couldn't have replied to the show cause issued," said Dhananjay, president JNUSU. "We have called for a demonstration against this attitude of the authorities. JNUSU has decided to go on a relay hunger strike starting from tonight," said Jyotsana Singh, joint secretary, JNUSU.

The friction between the students and the administration started after the February 19 event. The students locked the registrar of the University inside his car for hours while protesting during the workers' minimum wage struggle. The administration of the University had taken serious note of the incident. A proctorial committee was comprised to look into the matter after the students submitted their regret letters to the administration. Meanwhile, in a press statement issued, the Communist Party of India has appealed the JNU authorities to reconsider their decision and withdraw all punitive actions against the students. The party has also expressed solidarity to the workers' struggle going on in the campus.

Insurance firm told to pay Rs 2 lakh

New Delhi, June 23
The State Consumer Commission has pulled up an insurance company for repudiating a mediclaim policy and asked it to pay Rs two lakh compensation to a woman who was denied reimbursement of expenses incurred in the treatment of her renal ailment.

Terming the denial of claim as mischievous, the commission rejected the contention of New India Assurance Company Ltd (NIACL) that as per the exclusion clause of the policy it was not liable to compensate the insured as the disease, suffered by her, was the fallout of her pre-existing ailment. "Such a view does not hold water as the exclusion clause is strictly applicable only to those diseases which are declared in the said clause and not for any other disease,” the court said —OC
