Expressing deep concern over the recent happenings in various parts of Punjab and Haryana over the issue, the CPM state committee has termed the entire episode as "unfortunate". The committee said the countrymen had already suffered a lot due to such gross political misuse of religion. 2 govt depts lock horns over opening of liquor vend
Karnal, May 26
Inquiries revealed that though the state excise department had
"allowed'' the liquor contractor to open the vend on the dividing road of Sector 7-8 but HUDA had sealed the same alleging it as a gross violation of rules. Talking to The Tribune here recently the estate officer of HUDA confirmed that the vend had been sealed for illegally using the HUDA land. He said no permission was sought to run the wine shop. Malik said any authorised commercial activity could be run strictly from the markets developed by HUDA in various sectors. Despite repeated attempts district excise and taxation officer Rameshwar Mehra was not available for comments. It is learnt that the local HUDA officials have written to the headquarters over the issue and awaiting ‘green light’ before taking any action, including registering an FIR against the ``violators''. Meanwhile, residents and students of private schools held a demonstration near the vend recently. Holding posters against the opening of the vend the slogan-raising protesters demanded immediate shifting of the shop. The agitated parents said that they were worried about their wards. |
Recruitment test to select school heads postponed
Chandigarh, May 26 The exam scheduled for tomorrow now stands postponed with the fresh date and format yet to be announced. Earlier this month Haryana had announced its move to conduct an objective type test for teachers to select the very best from among them.
For this, they were required to prove their credentials both as a teacher and administrator. But it is learnt that the government was under tremendous pressure from lobbies, who demanded the scrapping of the test as it would leave little scope for getting their candidates adjusted. Haryana has advertised 266 vacancies for headmasters and headmistresses. Since, the Hooda government has declared education one of its prime focus areas, it was proposed at the bureaucratic level to induct the very best to give impetus to education reforms like semestrisation of exams and encouraging enrolment of girls students. But for obvious reasons this move did not go well with some, whose pressure prevailed and the exam to be held at Ambala on May 27, 2007 now stands postponed. The commission has cited administrative reasons for this announcement made on the eve of the examination. But since the commission has not announced a fresh date of the examination, it is said that a fresh thinking will be done on the issue on how the recruitment is to be done. Sources said that at the instance of some people, the commission is considering increasing the marks for viva voce. It may, however, be mentioned that though the commission has succumbed to pressure and had postponed the exam, the move has not gone well with Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who is insisting that the recruitment be held on merit as per the decision already taken. But since he is pre-occupied with family affairs after the demise of his brother recently, the matter is likely to come up for his review sometime next week. The move to hold an entrance test was being viewed as a very positive development by officials of the Education Department. After the announcement of the decision, a senior official of the department had said “Putting these candidates through a written test should ascertain where each candidate stands both in terms of knowledge and aptitude”. Officials are now not willing to comment on the reasons behind the cancellation of the exam. As per the previous proposal, each candidate was to be judged on general knowledge, general studies and English language skills. They were told that they would be tested as per post graduate standards on their skills and knowledge of teaching methodology and ability to teach Hindi at the matriculation level. The Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) had shortlisted 800 candidates for filling the 266 vacancies. The now postponed test was supposed to be a multiple choice test with 200 questions, each of two marks each. |
