Class X: Cash awards for first three toppers
Haryana girls can now dream big

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 23
Haryana has launched a massive drive to encourage parents to send their daughters to school. The State has come out with various schemes such as loans, cash awards and other doles to serve as an incentive for both children and their parents to promote literacy.

According to official figures 354 girls, who secure first three positions in the matriculation examination of the Haryana School Education Board at the block level have been given cash awards.

“The award of 2000, Rs 1500 and Rs 1000 are given to every blocks first three position holders among girls. The response has been very encouraging. The pass percentage has gone up in schools and the result of the girls is almost at par with that of the boys”, a senior official of the Haryana Government said.

Giving out details of results of the girls, the official said that during the middle exams held in 2006, the pass percentage of girls was around 55 per cent, this went up to over 66 per cent in 2007.

In the secondary examination conducted by the Haryana Board the pass percentage of girls went up from over 59 per cent in 2006 to nearly 70 per cent in 2007.

The senior secondary results of the girls were most encouraging as the pass percentage went up from a little under 60 percent to over 77 percent.

According to R. S. Gujral, Financial Commissioner-cum-Principal Secretary, Education, the results have improved due to the implementation of semesters in school.

Other officials agree, but say incentives like educational loans for study in institutions of higher learning, including technical and vocational courses has increased participation of girls in education. “Girls have started dreaming big and are pursuing those dreams”, they say.

Cash awards to 354 girl students have been given under the 'Awards to Rural Adolescent Girls' - a scheme started by the Hooda government to encourage girls participation in education. Under this scheme, which is run by the Department of Women and Child Development, a sum of Rs 5.35 lakh has been earmarked for distribution during the current financial year.

In December last year, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had announced incentives to facilitate educational facilities for girls. The State had observed the year 2006 as the "Year of the Girl Child".

Meritorious girls, as per Hooda’s plans are to be honoured at special functions known as `Balika Samman Samaroh'.

It may be mentioned here that the Haryana Government has entrusted the responsibility of ensuring cent per cent enrolment of girls in schools to the panchayats. The State has decided to suitably honour gram panchayats that achieve this objective.

Among the various other steps taken by the State government to encourage girls from going to school are its decision to make education free for girls, provide them with soft loans to pursue higher education, given them bicycles to travel to schools outside the village, reserving one-fourth of the seats in all industrial training institutes and technical institutions for girls etc.

Last month, Haryana had announced abolishing tuition fee for girls in all government schools of the state up to the Plus 2 level, benefiting nearly 1.75 lakh girl students.

HSGPC wants dera chief to visit Akal Takht
Satish Seth

Kaithal, May 23
Jagdish Singh Jhinda presided over a meeting of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (ad hoc) that was called to discuss the prevailing situation, here today.

Briefing the mediapersons after the meeting, Jhinda said though the action of the chief of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda of dressing up like Guru Gobind Singh had been severely criticised, the HSGPC was concerned about finding a solution to this problem. He added that this matter was relevant to Sikhs all around the world and that the supreme temporal seat of power for the followers of this Panth was Akal Takht, Amritsar.

Jhinda said HSGPC was of this view that dera chief’s regret could not pacify the Sikhs. “The dera chief should go to Akal Takht in Amritsar to pay obeisance and ask for forgiveness for this act at Harminder Sahib so that peace can be restored,” he suggested.

He said HSGPC, a religious body, had nothing to do with politics and so it would prevail upon Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh to visit the Akal Takht by May 30 and ask for forgiveness. He said in case the dera chief failed to do so, HSGPC would request the Haryana government to drive him away from the state so that peace could be maintained.
