UP poll debacle
Kurukshetra, May 13 While addressing a public meeting here today, Bishnoi said Gandhi could not restore the base of the Congress in UP and she had no right to continue in the chair of the presidentship of the Congress. Besides, not only the Haryana Chief Minister but even the Cabinet should submit their resignations on this ground, he added. Bishnoi reiterated that the people of Haryana had voted to the Congress with the hope that Bhajan Lal would be the Haryana Chief Minister, but contrary to this, Bhupinder Singh Hooda was thrusted on them. He said the Congress had become the party of the privileged and not of common man. He further alleged that in Haryana the law and order situation was deteriorated to such an extent that the criminals of neighbouring states got shelter in Haryana easily because they had no fear of their arrest. He said he had raised voice against acquiring 325 acres of land for setting up Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the interest of farmers, but instead of being appreciated, he was served with a show cause notice by the Congress high command. He alleged that the Congress leaders had been surrounded by anti-Congress people and were misleading the public. However, barren land should be acquired for such purpose. In this way, such land would be used purposefully, he added. Organiser of this function and former Haryana forest minister Devender Sharma claimed that the Congress workers associated with Bhajan Lal and Kuldip Bishnoi were faithful workers. Mr Sharma, who has covered dozens of villages and urban areas campaigning for his superiors, reported that a wave for these leaders had started getting momentum. Dr S.N. Arya, former vice-chancellor, Kurukshetra University, blamed the Congress high command for not doing justice to Kuldip Bishnoi by serving with a show cause notice for raising his voice against acquiring fertile land for SEZ resulting in ruining the small farmers and for forcibly imposing Hooda on the people of Haryana. Former district committee president Pawan Garg said this movement was launched by Bhajan Lal and Kuldip Bishnoi from Kurukshetra last year. Now, this movement had gained momentum and day by day more people were joining them. Meanwhile, Dr Devender Sharma, organiser of the function, was honoured by Kuldip Bishnoi. |

Babus to get laptops
Chandigarh, May 13 It is now official that officers of the rank financial commissioners, special secretaries, heads of the departments, chief executives and managing directors of boards and corporations will be given laptops. This is despite the fact that not many babus are computer literate. Some years ago, the Haryana government had sanctioned mobile phones to senior officials. Each officer has a mobile phone, but hardly is this number given out to anyone. So much so that even the official phone directory of the government does not carry the numbers of mobile phones of officers. Critics feel that laptops will be used for personal use in the same manner in which the mobile phones are used. Though, the objective of giving away laptops is stated to be better coordination through faster communication system, it is learnt that not many officials have subscribed to the National Informatics Centre (NIC) connectivity, even though it is free for officials. The decision to give away laptops was announced by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology through a notification. |

The Akali leader had alleged that although Punjabi had been accorded second language status by the government, but it was imposing unrealistic conditions to discourage Punjabi teaching in schools. For instance, he alleged, the government had directed that Punjabi would be taught only if a school or college had at least 40 students opting for it. He said since Sikhs were in minority in the state, it was virtually impossible to meet this condition.
