Yamunanagar, May 24
Irked over death of an RMP doctor in a road accident, a mob of more than 300 villagers tonight went on rampage at the under-construction Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power plant here. It set on fire several vehicles, including two trucks and property of the plant. The crowd also pelted stones but it could not be known if anyone sustained injuries or not.

RMP doctor Ghasetu Ram of Ratanpura village, who was returning home on a bicycle, was run over by a truck near the village along the thermal plant.

Earlier also the villagers of the area had made several complaints to the administration about unauthorised over-loaded trucks plying on roads of the town.

The mob dispersed before the police reached the spot. The mob also set on fire several sheds on the campus of the thermal plant and ransacked its canteen. Two fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire at different places in the campus. Senior officials of the administration, including the DC and the SP, reached the spot.

The trouble started when the news of the doctor’s death spread in the area, said police sources. Soon a crowd gathered and a large number of villagers went towards the plant, being set up by the Reliance Energy Limited (REL).

The crowd stopped two trucks (dumpers) along a road leading to the plant and set it on fire. The mob then entered the thermal plant campus and set on fire several sheds. Two motorcycles and an equal number of bicycles were also burnt in the incident.

Sources said later the mob moved further into the thermal campus and ransacked the canteen. The cash box of the canteen containing a large amount of money was also missing.

Workers and labourers in the plant ran for cover as the crowd had also started pelting stones. DC Nitin Kumar Yadav told the Tribune that preliminary investigations revealed that there were certain anti-social elements in the crowd who had caused the trouble and the police was looking for them.

Meanwhile, family members of the deceased agreed to lift the body from the spot after about two hours. The body was sent to the morgue of the Yamunanagar civil hospital. No case had been registered when the reports last came in. The driver of the truck has absconded.

IT vendors unite to have fair deal with Microsoft
Naveen S Garewal
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 24
As the Information Technology (IT) giant Microsoft strengthens its presence in the northern region, IT hardware vendors in Haryana have united to form a pressure group of sorts so as to safeguard their interest and to initiate a dialogue with the corporation to pre-empt any bid at their ‘arm twisting’ by the anti-piracy wing of the corporation and to leverage a fairer business terms.

Hit hard by Microsoft’s anti-piracy drive in Haryana, the Haryana Computers Traders Association has been formed with about 60 vendors joining in from cities like Rohtak, Karnal, Hisar and Panipat. The association, first of its kind in the region pledged its support to the software ‘anti-piracy’ campaign, but made it clear that they will not succumb to arbitrary and uncalled pressure from ‘overzealous’ guardians of software companies.

In a process to form a pressure group, the association has made it clear that it does not support the business of pirated software and appreciates Microsoft's drive against it. They said that formation of the association became necessary after Microsoft sent notices to various business partners as part of its anti-piracy drive on May 3, 2007, issuing legal notices and imposing penalties.

The newly formed association would now initiate dialogue with Microsoft to minimise harassment to the vendors and at the same time support the corporation in its anti-piracy drive. Till the announcement of executive body, a three-member committee consisting of Ajay Singla from Panipat, Habhajan Singh from Karnal and Rajiv Taneja from Hisar will look after the interests of the association.

The association proposes to find a mutually agreeable solution between Microsoft and its business partners - the vendors - on various issues that include warranty, service and payments.

It may be mentioned that software major Microsoft has opened a facility in Chandigarh, as part of its strategy to boost its presence in the non-metros of the country. Company officials said that they planned to make their presence in States like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and J&K markets more visible.

Several issues have arisen out of the company’s move to have a direct presence in the region. While Microsoft proposes to help its clients and partners with enhanced solutions and services, besides support with faster turnaround time, but Microsoft partners in Haryana feel that individual partners are unable to leverage fair terms and therefore want to negotiate terms of business through an association.

Surjewala wants package for farmers

Chandigarh, May 24
The All-India Kisan-Khet Mazdoor Congress has demanded that while drafting a new Land Acquisition Act the Union Ministry for Rural Development must ensure that the land owners should be given a stake in the project for which their land is to be acquired.

Talking to newsmen here today president of the front organisation of the Congress Shamsher Singh Surjewala said he had written a letter to Union Minister for Rural Development Raghuvansh Prasad suggesting that the "minimum basic rights" of the tiller of the land must be protected under the new Act.

The Ministry for Rural Development is engaged in framing a new Land Acquisition Act after it was asked to do so by an Empowered Group of Ministers set up to go into the issue of special economic zones.

Surjewala said since land was a "perennial" commodity, rather than acquiring it and thus depriving a farmer of his ownership rights for all times to come, the land should be taken on perpetual lease so that the owner and his subsequent generations could continue to get a sustained income.

He also demanded that the news Act should take care of the rehabilitation of not only the owners but also the agriculture labour working on it, besides the rural artisans depended on agriculture-based economy.

The rehabilitation package should also include the provision for providing alternative settlement to displaced families, houses, education for their children, who should also be given technical training so that they could be gainfully employed in the absence of agriculture land.

Surjewala said in case land was being acquired for a factory, the displaced family must be given a stake in the project which should be over and above the compensation paid to it for its land. — TNS
