Jalandhar, May 23
Getting admission into Punjab Technical University (PTU) affiliated engineering colleges in the state would be more difficult this time.

Reason: The number of aspirants has nearly doubled this year. The sale of Common Entrance Test (CET) forms clearly indicates the tough competition ahead for the students.

More than 31,000 students have purchased the CET forms from various PTU counters set up at different banks across the state. The figure last year was around 17,000.

There are a total of 42 PTU engineering colleges in Punjab.

The number of seats filled through CET counselling is nearly 10,000.

Around 4,000 seats are filled under the management quota.

Earlier, many colleges were finding it hard to fill the seats, but now in the new scenario they are feeling quite relieved.

Seemingly happy over the massive sale of entrance forms, dean academics Dr V.K. Arora said more competition would mean better quality.

Vice-chancellor Dr S.K. Salwan confirmed that the response was overwhelming. He said the last date for submission of forms for admission to PTU colleges through All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was June 27 and he hoped that more forms would pour in.

He said preparations were on for setting up examination centres in various cities for CET which will be held on June 2.

“The result would be declared on June 15 and the counselling would begin on June 25 at Government Polytechnic for Women, Ladowali Road, Jalandhar,” he added.

CFLs to light up govt offices

Phagwara, May 23
In a move that could save on power consumption in the state, Punjab government has decided to replace traditional bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in all government offices of the state. This was stated by an official of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) here today.

The official said all senior officials of the PSEB of the districts concerned have been instructed to make use of CFLs to save on consumption of electricity. He said in this way state could save 150 MW of power by using CFLs.

Meanwhile, Punjab is likely to set up a 400 MW hydel plant in Uttaranchal Pradesh, as hydropower was far cheaper than the thermal plant and free from pollution hazardous, the official said. The official also advised agriculture consumers to replace conventional bulbs with CFLs. “The state government could save 100 MW to 110 MW of power by installing CFLs in the agriculture sector alone,” the official said.

The official asked to take tough measures to check this menace. He asked for setting up of special police stations to deal with the theft cases on the Gujarat pattern. He also directed the authorities concerned to replicate the Gujarat model to minimise transmission and distribution losses. — TNS

The district police claim to have solved the mystery behind blind murder of a labourer Shambu, resident of village Jhikka, following the arrest of one Hari Ram known as Jatan wala Baba, working as a chowkidar in nearby village Bairsian.

DSP Dilbagh Singh Pannu said the police had recovered a half empty bottle of liquor, some strands of long hair and torn piece of cloth near the body on May 17.

“During investigation, the police came to know that the village chowkidar Hari Ram had long hair.
