Jalandhar, May 19
On the call of different organisations including ruling SAD (Badal), almost complete bandh was observed today in the city in protest against the action of the Baba Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh, head of Dera Sacha Sauda, in which he had allegedly tried to copy the ceremonies once performed by Guru Gobind Singh at Salabatpura village of Bathinda few days ago.

Shopkeepers in most of the major markets within the city and on the outskirts kept their shops closed. Following the directions of the district administration the educational institutions also remained closed today. Several groups of Sikh youths were seen making rounds of the different areas on their motorcycles and scooters. Some of them were brandishing naked swords.

Effigies of dera chief were reportedly burnt at some places including BMC chowk.

However no untoward incident was reported during the bandh as elaborate security arrangements were made.

Meanwhile, the president of Jan Morcha, Gian Chand, criticised the dera chief for hurting the sentiments of Sikh community. He said that he should have been arrested the same day when he had allegedly imitated Guru Gobind Singh and served Jam-e-Insan at Salabatpura in Bathinda. Criticising Parkash Singh Badal led Punjab government for not acting promptly, he appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.

Staff crunch hits Batala MC fire wing
Our Correspondent

Batala, May 19
The fire department of the municipal council, Batala, is facing acute staff shortage. The department has three fire fighting vehicles and only two drivers, out of which one is temporary, whereas the requirement is of nine to twelve drivers for 24-hour duty.

The requirement list is long. Nine firemen are needed whereas there is none. The department has only one sub-fireman whereas six are needed.

As per the requirement, the department needs 64 employees in total.

Adding fuel to the fire, the period of temporary employees is also near its completion, which means more burden coming in the way for the permanent staff.

And after taking everything into consideration, the MC doesn’t look fit to handle any untoward incident particularly in surrounding villages.

Subhash Sekhri, president, municipal council, Batala, said he has asked the director of local bodies, Punjab, to allow one year extension to temporary employees but nothing has yielded so far. If the authorities allow us then the employees would continue to work otherwise they would leave, further added Sekhri.

Murder accused surrender

Banga, May 19
After a drama full of suspense and uncertainty lasting four days, Bhupinder Singh and Manjit Singh, the main accused in the brutal murder case of former sarpanch Paramjit Singh of Zandiala village, surrendered to the police late last evening.

The police took a three-day police remand after producing both the accused in a local court.

According to nodal officer SP (H), Jagtar Singh, the accused surrendered before him at the Banga police station. He was hiding all these days in nearby villages or travelling in trains to elude arrest. Both the accused were sent to Banga police station where they would be interrogated.

“The police also recovered .32 bore pistol and a sharp-edged weapon from the accused. The accused had an argument with the deceased on the issue of watering the fields,” said the SP.

Sources, however, indicate that Bhupinder Singh and Manjit Singh had surrendered last late evening and were questioned by senior officials. It has also been reliably learnt that Manjit Singh had fired four shots at former sarpanch Paramjit Singh and Bhupinder Singh attacked him with sharp-edged weapon before fleeing the site. — TNS
