5 addicts escape as mob damages property
Phillaur, May 11 The demonstrators alleged that Harjinder died on March 25 due to the inhuman attitude and physical torture given by the doctors of Punjab Drugs-De-Addiction Centre Goraya. The demonstrators were demanding immediate arrest of the doctor. Meanwhile, five other under treatment drug addicts managed to escape from the centre during ransacking of the centre. The youths went to the Goraya police station to demand immediate arrests of the doctor. When this correspondent visited the Goraya police station the five inmates, including Surjit Ram (30) of Dhindsa, Vinay Kumar (35) of Kapurthala, Ashok Kumar (20) of Rahon, Pawan Kumar (50) of Tanda and Gurpreet (27) of Dharamkot told this correspondent in the presence of police officers including ASI Raj Kumar and Shiv Sena Phillaur president Rajesh Sharma that they were inhumanly mistreated by the doctor for the last two months. One youth alleged that he was given electric shocks, while the others alleged that they were beaten up mercilessly by the doctor. The youths alleged that the said doctor visited only twice a week and only for few minutes. ASI Raj Kumar said though said doctor had been taken into custody, but the truth could be brought by the parents of these drugs addicts who had been informed. Meanwhile, ASI Raj Kumar said, though an amicable settlement was made on March 25 between the family members of the deceased Harjinder and the doctor but the family members of the deceased’s family were irritated over some breach of settlement. Doctor Amandeep, in charge of Punjab Drugs De-Addiction Centre, denied the allegations being levelled against him by the five youths and claimed that the parents of the youths knew the facts. Doctor however, admitted that he had only a degree of D. Pharmacy but was running the centre with the assistance of a psychiatrist Dr Roopinder Kapoor of Phagwara who visited the centre daily. |
Govt schools score low in admissions
Jalandhar, May 11 The admission scenario has been so dismal that despite the fact that the schools had started taking children from January onwards, they have not been able to gain a sufficient strength even still. The various incentives of the government to provide mid-day meals, and free books and scholarships to SC students too seem to have not encouraged the parents to send their children to the schools. The Government Elementary School for Boys on Garha Road has got just 10 students in class I, despite the fact that the school is prominently located and is situated hardly a kilometer away from the Garha locality mostly inhabited by labourers, vendors and daily wagers. “Our school is situated on a busy road and most parents do not want their children to come here because of traffic problem,” said school official. “The parents have to produce birth certificate to ensure admission for their children, which no parents approaching us have.” The Government Primary School for Girls on Garha Road, however, has got a better response. Nearly 29 girls have taken admission here but the staff members say that this is too low going by their previous record. The primary wing of Government Senior Secondary School on Ladowali Road too has got just 11 students. The District education officer (elementary), Joginder Dass, said he was not aware of the problem. |
Woman set on fire by mother-in-law dies
Chandigarh, May 11 Till 6 am today, Manisha hung on to life, waiting to see her children. But they were no where in sight. The Kartarpur police, handling the case, had failed to bring her two sons and daughter to get a last glimpse of their mother. This despite Manisha’s family’s writing to the police, requesting them to honour the victim’s last wish. SHO, Kartarpur, Inderjit Verma, said the request was received very late last evening and there was barely any time to act. Manisha’s brother Amarjit, however, said the written request was submitted day before yesterday and verbal requests were being made from the day Manisha had been brought to New Ruby Hospital, Jalandhar, with 80 per cent burns. He also alleged that Manisha’s sisters-in-law deliberately brought her to a hospital so far away whereas they could have easily taken her to Kartarpur. Whatever the truth may be, the victim’s sons were not present even for her last rituals today - something her family says the police should have seen to. “They had five days to bring the children, who are still in the custody of Manisha’s in-laws. We fear for their lives because they were at home when Manisha was burnt. May be they witnessed the crime,” said Jeeto Kaur, Manisha’s mother, who said Manisha was under pressure from her husband Ramesh Gill to divorce him. He had immigrated to UK two years ago and was looking for ways to get settled there permanently. |

Wheat scam: Bakery body for CBI probe
Jalandhar, May 11 Apparently much pleased at the disclosure, the members said that they had been long complaining that the two giant companies were being offered various subsidies, easy loan and tax exemptions which helped them emerge as the leaders in the bakery market. Sudesh Vij, president of the association, said, “We have not been able to compete with them as they could offer the same product at a lower price owing to subsidies. Many units could not stand against them and had to eventually shut their business. “They saved Rs 3 crore for an investment made to the tune of Rs 2 crore. In a time span of five years, they got an exemption of Rs 35 crore,” he calculated. |
