It was only a half-hearted attempt on the part of municipal corporation employees who had gone to demolish the dairies falling within its limits at Ram Nagar Birring but used their JCB machines to pull down only a few sheds.

The residents alleged that the MC officials had sprung into action after much persistence but they did not completely demolish the structures.

They said only the frontal portion of the sheds and the gates were removed, while the huge backyards were spared.

They said the biggest dairy situated right on the side of the main road leading towards their houses too had been spared as very little damage had been done to it.

Today’s action reportedly also resulted in an exchange of arguments between residents and dairy owners as they blamed the former for the trouble.

The residents of the area have been complaining in this regard to the MC officials and political leaders for quite some time but each time the dairy owners had managed to get the time period extended on one pretext or the other.

The MC officials had asked the owners to shift to a dairy complex set up at Subhanpur and given them a month’s notice in September last year but they continued to stay back causing much trouble to the residents of Ward numbers 49 and 52.

Eviction orders had earlier been passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court but these too had been flouted with impunity.

While five of the nine dairies that were occupying the area on rental basis had moved out, the remaining four running in their own accommodation continued to keep their cattle.

The residents said the stench emanating from the dairies was almost unbearable for them, especially on days when it was raining.

The worst, they said, was when the dairy owners got the left out bones from the waste of hotels to mix these with the feed.

They said that birds picked up these bones and dropped them on their rooftops and in verandahs. The ladies in the area said that they had to remove these bone pieces from around the houses every morning and evening.

Expressing concern over the suicides by farmers, he alleged that the present SAD-BJP government was doing nothing for the debt-ridden farmers.

Talking to The Tribune on the phone, Mann further suggested that Punjab farmers should be allowed fish farming in the SYL canal till no final decision was taken by the court on the canal.

“It would boost the financial condition of the farmers,” he added.
