Banga, May 1
A remarriage attempt by a Garhshankar-based man was thwarted by his vigilant wife, when she contacted the bride's family along with proof here late last night.

The bridegroom, instead of taking his 'bride' along for a happy life thereafter, was made to cool his heels in a local police station.

The all preened-up youth and his baraatis, soon after receiving a warm welcome, found themselves in soup.

The groom was given a thrashing and sent to police station along with his parents and middleman. Most of the baraatis, seeing that all was not well, preferred to flee the spot.

The incident took place at a local resort last night, where a marriage party had come from Garhshankar. Garhshankar resident Raj Kumar's son Rajeev was to be married to a local girl, who resides in the Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar area.

Rajeev's wife, Seema, a Hoshiarpur girl, who had provided the pictures of her marriage with Rajeev after she had learnt that he was getting remarried although they were not divorced, contacted the parents of the local girl.

They have a five-year-old daughter also. Seema and Rajeev had been living separately for some time due to some differences.

Seema told them that they were married in 2000 and alleged that Rajeev was not happy with her as he wanted dowry.

She had filed a case in the court, but both the families had organised a panchayat to sort out the matter. Later, a compromise was effected and they had decided to live together.

She claimed that when on April 29, she went to his house in Garhshankar, she found that he was getting remarried.

She tried to find the girl, but could not. Yesterday, on the day of marriage, she reached Banga and submitted her complaint to the police.

The baraat had come to the resort where the groom and his family members were confronted on this issue.

When they refused to confess that Rajeev was already married and claimed that Seema was blackmailing them, the family called the police.

The baraatis were then taken to the police station. High drama was witnessed at the police station.

At the police station, Rajeev's father Raj Kumar told the police that the woman who had called up the would-be in-laws of Rajeev was an orchestra dancer and her photos with Rajeev were doctored.

But when the police probed them, the groom's family admitted that Rajeev and this woman were married and they also had a child.

The police said that later a compromise was reached between both the parties. According to this compromise, Rajeev's family gave the money, which was spent by the girl's family on making arrangements for the marriage. Finally, Rajeev and his family had to return without the new bride.
