After two months, Jagjit makes an appearance
Jalandhar, May 18 Having been thrown out of power after a gap of 25 years and remaining in a hiding for nearly two months, he maintained a very low profile today. Seemingly quite upset, he kept his head down most of the time and preferred not to talk much as his nearly 150 well-wishers came to meet him at the memorial of his parents on the way to his residence in
the village. Before coming back home, he paid obeisance at Guru Ravi Dass Bhavan in the city. None of the city’s prominent Congressmen barring mayor Surinder Mahey were there to welcome him. A seasoned politician, Chaudhary Jagjit Singh alleged that he was being deliberately embroiled in the issue as he was a dalit. “This is not for the first time that Badal has played a game against me. He had earlier accused me in 1977 in a disproportionate assets case”, he blamed the CM. “Hanspal, who was a co-accused in the case, is a free man now for the Namdhari sect put in a word for him before Badal”, he pointed out. On his plans, he put up a rather brave face, “My legal experts will contest the case. Earlier too, Badal failed in his attempts. Things are going to take the same course again
this time”. Asked where he had been hiding out, he laughed, “I was in Punjab. I have friends all over. I stayed with them.” He again had a hearty laughter when he was asked whether he had changed his looks. “People have been saying that I had grown my beard. That’s not true. I have been shaving daily”, he said. On being quizzed as to what he would do after being out of power after two and a half decades, he replied, “I will continue to organise the party helping it re-build the dalit base. This was the factor that led to our defeat. We had been over-confident of their
support to us”. On his contacts with former CM, Amarinder Singh, he said, “We have been talking over the phone daily.” |
SAD gives Jalandhar
bandh call
Jalandhar, May 18 Security has been beefed up in the city to avoid any untoward clash. Taking a precautionary measure, district magistrate Ajit Singh Pannu ordered closing of all government and private schools and colleges of the city. He, however, said that all university or board examination would be conducted as per schedule. Despite implementation of Section 144 in the city, representatives of various Sikh organisations gathered outside the Company Bagh today where they gave a show of strength brandishing their swords. The protestors then moved towards the district administrative complex to submit their memorandum. A meeting of the peace committee with representation from local units of political parties was convened by the DC in the evening in which he asked them to maintain law and order. SAD district urban president, Gurcharan Singh Channi, assured that the essential services would not be hampered in the bandh. Meanwhile, former MLA Gurbinder Singh Atwal today held a press conference during which he said that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal should resign from the post if he failed to keep a control on the tense situation. He challenged Badal to prove his statement that the Congress was responsible for the problem. |

New adventures for
NCC cadets
Jalandhar, May 18 Deputy Director General of NCC at Delhi headquarters, Air Vice Marshal S.S. Hothi, told this to mediapersons during a wreath laying ceremony held at war memorial here today. He said that while till previous year 13 lakh cadets were being taken from all over India, the corps had now got a sanction to induct 15 lakh cadets. Air Vice Marshal Hothi said that the NCC was already giving many incentives to the cadets. “Our C-certificate and republic day camp certificate is being accepted for direct recruitment of the cadets by many corporate companies including Reliance”, he said. Regarding requirement of an aero-modelling instructor (AMI) for the NCC air wing in Jalandhar group, the DDG said that the matter had been taken up with the state government and he hoped that the group would soon get a new instructor on the pattern of Ludhiana and Amritsar. Even as the air wing cadets were away to Palampur for a camp, the cadets from Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala and girls’ battalion and their instructors held a short interaction with the Air Vice Marshal. The DDG, who hails from Ranjit Nagar in the city, turned a bit nostalgic as he recalled his old days here and as a student of Sainik School Kapurthala. |
