Sachin hits 36th ton, Sourav scores 13th
Sirshendu Panth

Chittagong, May 19
Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar cracked centuries but Bangladesh pegged India back by picking up three quick wickets on the rain-truncated second day of the first Test here today.

The two ageing stars achieved personal milestones but could not consolidate the team’s position as they fell immediately after reaching the landmark to leave the visitors at 384 for six at close.

Resuming at 295 for 3, the Indians added 89 runs in 110 minutes of play that was possible during the day, with Mahendra Singh Dhoni (36) and Anil Kumble (1) remaining unbeaten at the crease.

Ganguly (100) and Tendulkar (101) delighted their fans by reaching the three-figure mark, but both perished soon after, trying to accelerate the pace of scoring.

The duo stitched together a 189-run stand for the fourth wicket, in the process overhauling the previous highest partnership of 164 for India against Bangladesh which they themselves had made in 2004-05.

Ganguly, who had made his last hundred in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, in 2005, was the first to reach the three-figure mark with a single off pacer Shahadat Hossain.

This is Ganguly’s 13th ton in 92 Test appearances and it came off 163 balls in 221 minutes.

The left-hander perished without scoring another run, attempting a pull against Mashrafe Mortaza and giving a high catch to Mohammad Rafique at mid-off.

Tendulkar, on the other hand, played patiently to post his 36th ton in 136 Tests with a single to mid-on. The landmark was reached in 271 minutes off 167 balls.

Tendulkar’s knock, too, ended soon after, as he mistimed a pull of Shahadat Hossain and the top edge was taken by Mohammad Ashraful at mid off. Ramesh Powar, making his Test debut, got out for 7.

The start of play was again delayed by the rain and the first two sessions were completely washed out.

The nagging rain since last night left the ground soggy, and the overcast conditions prevented the outfield from drying up early, even as the groundsmen worked frantically to make play possible.

Four inspections later, the umpires started play 90 minutes after the scheduled tea break.

Ganguly, in an aggressive mood, sent pacer Shahadat Hossain packing to the midwicket fence to bring up the 300 for India.

Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar took the new ball after 81 overs, but Ganguly hit another boundary to reach 96, before getting to the magic figure 36 minutes into the day’s play.

Afridi’s blitz stuns Lanka

Abu Dhabi, May 19
Shahid Afridi’s swashbuckling 73 not out led Pakistan to a five-wicket win over World Cup runners-up Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match Warid Series last night.

Pakistan, chasing Sri Lanka’s 235 for 9, reached 239 for 5 with eight overs to spare.

Afridi struck eight fours and four sixes in 34 deliveries, including 32 runs off spinner Malinga Bandara’s final over at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Pakistan needed five runs per over until that stage, and that over eased the required rate to just over two after Afridi hit the leg-spinner for 4,4,6,6,6,6.

Earlier, Farveez Maharoof’s career-best 69 not out off 54 balls set up Sri Lanka’s challenging total after they were reduced 105-3 in the packed 20,000-seat stadium.

West Indies save follow-on

London, May 19
West Indies saved the follow-on against England after a spirited fightback on the third day of the first Test at Lord’s today.

At the close West Indies were 363 for seven in reply to England’s 553 for five declared with Shivnarine Chanderpaul unbeaten on 63.

Dawyne Bravo earlier struck 56 from 59 balls, sharing a sixth-wicket partnership of 92 in 76 balls with Chanderpaul while wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin scored an enterprising 60.

England left-arm spinner Monty Panesar took four for 108, including three lbws.

Earlier, Panesar exposed West Indies’ frailty against high-class spin. The orthodox left-armer bowled Devon Smith (21) with his first delivery of the match 10 minutes before lunch after England had declared at their overnight total of 553 for five.

Panesar then won lbw appeals against captain Ramnaresh Sarwan (35), vice-captain Daren Ganga (49) and Runako Morton (14) in the afternoon session.

At tea, West Indies were struggling at 217 for five and their plight would have been worse had it not been for the patience of opener Ganga who laboured for almost three hours before falling one run short of his 10th test half-century.

England were indebted to Panesar, who compensated for the shortcomings of their pace attack by bowling unchanged from the Nursery End throughout the afternoon.

England lost the services of their most experienced bowler Matthew Hoggard, who left the field with a thigh injury before lunch after delivering the first ball of what would have been his 11th over.

BCCI to name coach by June 10

Chittagong, May 19
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today said the final decision on appointing a new coach for the Indian team would be taken by June 10 by a seven-member committee formed for the purpose.

BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, who arrived here as part of a four-member board delegation headed by president Sharad Pawar, said, “The coach selection committee will meet in Bangalore on June 4 and within the next few days, things will be finalised.”

Shah denied that the board’s top brass had come here to talk to outgoing Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore, but said he was ready for a discussion if the Aussie so desired.

“If he wants to meet me, I am open to it. There is no problem,” he said.

Shah, who is slated to return to India tomorrow, said the BCCI officials were here on an invitation from the Bangladesh Cricket Board and not to negotiate with Whatmore.

“We have come here on an invitation from the BCB to watch the Test. We have not come here to talk to Whatmore.”

About the urgency of coach selection, Shah said this was because the team was due to leave for Ireland on June 20.

“That’s the reason we plan to complete everything by June 10 and then have a camp for five days in Bangalore before going off for the trip.”

Shah refused to say whether Whatmore was the front-runner for the job and claimed that the board had some other names as well before it.

“It will not be right to talk about this now as the series is midway. The committee will decide everything. But we have a lot of names.”

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, however, said Whatmore was among the frontrunners. “Yes, there are a few names. The BCCI is approaching the matter with an open mind. However, considering the availability of the best coaches, Dav is a frontrunner,” he said.

Shukla, however, made it cleat that Pawar would not hold any discussions with Whatmore at this stage.

“Cricket manager Ravi Shastri is here to talk to him. Pawar will not speak to him.”

BCCI chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty is the other member of the BCCI team.

India have been without a full-time coach since former Australian captain Greg Chappell quit the job after the World Cup. The board subsequently made a stop-gap arrangement by roping in Shastri for the Bangladesh tour.

Beginning the process for finding a successor to Chappell, the BCCI last month constituted a seven-member committee headed by Pawar.

The other members of the committee are three former skippers Sunil Gavaskar, Shastri and S. Venkataraghavan, besides board treasurer N Srinivasan and joint secretary MP Pandove. Shah is the convener of the committee.

Separate teams for two series

Board secretary Niranjan Shah said today that separate teams would be picked for the ODI series in Ireland and the bilateral visit to England, but denied that any specific instructions had been given to the selectors.

“There will be two teams selected for the series in Ireland and the tour of England,” said Shah.

The teams are expected to be selected before June 10.

A five-day camp will be held at Bangalore before the players depart for Ireland on June 20.

Shah had created a furore when he wrote a letter - mentioning the board’s decision at a Working Committee meeting to develop youngsters - to chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar in the lead-up to team selection for the ongoing Bangladesh series.

Asked whether the seniors would be rested for the ODI series in Ireland, Shah said, “That is for the selectors to decide depending on the number of games we play and the stress on the players.”

The Indians are scheduled to play four ODIs in Belfast, one against hosts Ireland and three against South Africa in late June.

They then travel to England for a full-fledged series from July 7 to September 8, preceded by a charity match against Pakistan at Glasgow on July 3. — PTI

BCCI finds sponsors for Ireland ODIs

Mumbai, May 19
The BCCI has managed to find sponsors for India’s three-match series against South Africa in Ireland in June, a top BCCI official said today.

“We have a few advertisers ready for taking over the entire stadium but have not decided on whom to give the sponsorship to as yet. It will be decided next week,” said BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi.

India are to play a series of three ODIs against South Africa in Belfast as part of the BCCI’s off-shore venture, after taking on the host in a one-dayer on June 23.

The matches against South Africa have been scheduled for June 26, June 29 and July 1.

Modi said the BCCI approached the companies “directly” after their tender process failed to evoke a response.

“We issued a tender but there was no response. So, we went to the sponsors directly,” he said.

“We have a few companies interested. Two sponsors want the whole stadium and a lot others who want smaller pieces. We hope to finalise the deal by Wednesday,” he added. — PTI

Sasikiran leads despite defeat

Sofia, May 19
After two successive wins under his belt, Indian Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran lost his eighth-round game to revenge-seeking Gata Kamsky but still managed to hang on to a slender half-point lead over the chasing pack at the Mtel Masters here.

The second highest-ranked Indian after Anand, Sasikiran suddenly became the most-sought-after player, surprising everyone by leading the Mtel Super Grandmasters tournament after winning the sixth and seventh-round games.

In the eighth round, Sasikiran tried hard to equalise the game but Kamsky was bent upon avenging his third-round game defeat.

Parimarjan in joint lead

Kirishi (Russia): Parimarjan Negi took little time in quelling German International Master Falco Bindrich’s challenge to jump into joint lead after the third round of the World Youth Star chess tournament here.

With his second victory on the trot in the 12-player round-robin tournament, Negi has taken his tally to 2.5 points out of a possible three and now shares the lead with world junior champion Zaven Andriasian of Armenia. — UNI, PTI

JCT are NFL runners-up

Barasat, May 19
JCT of Phagwara finished runners-up with 31 points after defeating local giant East Bengal 3-2 in their last National Football League (NFL) outing for the ONGC Cup at Barasat stadium here today.

Mahindra United took the third position with 30 points form 18 matches.

JCT, who had an edge most of the time in the match, started on a whirlwind fashion and went ahead in the very fifth minute through their forward Chidi who played a stellar role today (1-0).

Chidi was declared man of the match.

The lead was, however, shortlived as EB drew level six minutes later through Ambani (1-1).

JCT, who combined well in the midfield, went ahead again in the 30th minute when Sunil Chhetri smartly headed home a Harish Sharma centre (2-1).

Inspired with the lead JCT sharpened its attack and Chidi struck again in the 34th minute (3-1) this time capitalising a pass from Baljit with a snap shot.

After the breather, East Bengal were successful in only reducing the margin when striker Asim Biswas following a pass form Nabi unleashed a left-footer from outside the box.

Churchill Bros finish fourth

Margao: George Ekeh and Odafe Okelie scored a brace each to have Churchill Bros score an emphatic 4-1 win over Air India to finish fourth at the end of the final round of the IIth ONGC National Football League, played at the Nehru Stadium here.

For the winners, Ekeh (26th, 80th) and Okelie (30th, 50th) moved the nets while Paresh Shivalkar reduced the margin for Air India in the 89th minute.

Okelie, who is the only player to score a hat-trick in this tournament against Mohammedan Sporting, scored his brace five minutes after resumption to win the golden boot award scoring 18 goals. In the 80th minute, Ekeh completed the rout when he scored on the run after getting the better of two rival defenders off a pass by Genius Zenith.

Churchill Bros, who finished fourth with 29 points from 18 matches, behind champion Dempo (36pts), JCT (31pts) and Mahindra United (30pts) became rich by Rs 16 lakh. While Air India finished seventh with 21 points.

Dempo who were crowned champion got the cash prize of Rs 40 lakh, while JCT and Mahindra United who came second and third got Rs 22 lakh and Rs 18 lakh, respectively. — PTI

Ghei takes two-shot lead

Macau, May 19
Gaurav Ghei sank a series of amazing putts as he opened a two-shot lead through 11 holes before play was suspended following a storm warning and heavy rain at the $300,000 Macau Open golf tournament.

Ghei shot four birdies on the front nine and was placed 11-under, two shots ahead of China’s Liang Wen Chong, who was nine-under for the tournament through 14 holes in third round.

Ghei, winner of the Pine Valley Beijing Open last month, was four-under through 11 holes. He is now in a perfect position to lift his second successive Asian Tour title.

Only 10 players finished their third rounds while the remaining 57 will return on tomorrow to complete their remaining holes.

Among other Indians, also in a good position was Gurbaaz Mann, despite two bogeys which saw him slip from being nine-under at one stage to seven-under when play was suspended. He was one-under through 15 holes and was tied sixth.

Rahil Gangjee was shaping well at two-under after but then he gave away four shots, including two bogeys and a double bogey, and dropped to four-under for the tournament for tied 26th spot.

Arjun Singh and Digvijay Singh were both tied at three-under after playing 12 and 15 holes, respectively, and were tied 36th. Gaganjeet Bhullar was even for the tournament after 12 holes.

Earlier, Harmeet Kahlon, Uttam Singh Mundy, SSP Chowrasia and Amritinder Singh missed the cut as the second round was completed this morning.

Jyoti makes cut, Jeev doesn’t

Adare Manor: Jyoti Randhawa leapfrogged to tied 17th while Shiv Kapur also managed to make the cut but the door was shut on Jeev Milkha Singh at the midway stage of the Irish Open on the European Tour.

Randhawa (70) played some very smart golf and putted very well in tough conditions to bring in one of the handful of sub-par cards to soar from his overnight 85th place on the leaderboard, while Kapur (74) rode on the wings of a final-hole eagle to ensure weekend action.

However, for Jeev, nothing went right and he was clearly struggling against the gushing wind as he stuttered to 82 in the second round. Jeev had a 74 on the opening day and his total fell way behind the cut, which came at seven-over.

Atwal, Chopra bow out

Duluth (Georgia): Arjun Atwal’s bid to hang around for weekend action came a cropper as the Orlando-based Indian, along with Indian-born Swede Daniel Chopra, crashed out of the AT&T Classic at the Greg Norman-designed TPC Sugarloaf.

Atwal had a decent opening round of 70 that earned him a share of the 22nd spot but a nightmarish second round of seven-over 79 put paid to his hopes of making the cut.

Atwal’s horrendous round included five bogeys and a triple bogey against a lone birdie.

Chopra, too, fell by the wayside after his round of 73 that saw him finish at even-par 144 after 36 holes which was not enough to stay in contention. — PTI

Junior golfers finish third

Fanling, May 19
The Indian team registered its best ever show in the Junior Asia pacific golf championship but squandered a golden opportunity to emerge victorious after enjoying an overnight two-stroke lead over Chinese Taipei at the Hong Kong Golf Club here.

The Indian team could not keep the tempo on the final day and slipped to third position.

Taipei won the championship by two strokes over Thailand which came from behind with some superb performance.

India had great chance to win the championship but the main anchor for three rounds, Amanjyot Singh had a disastrous start with triple bogey on the first hole itself and could not recover to finish the final at eight-over-par 78.

Among the other members, Rahul Bakshi played steady golf to finish at one-over 71 while Chikkarangappa finished with four-over 74.

Chikkarangappa finished runner up in Cat B while Amanjyot Singh finished fourth and Rahul Bakshi was 5th.

The girls team finished joint fifth, with Lavery Kumar topping the honours for Indian girls to finish ninth over all. Vaishavi Sinha was placed 12th and Nalini Singh 19th. — UNI
