Fake travel agent in police net

Jalandhar, May 21
District police on Sunday night arrested an unauthorised travel agent who is wanted in several cases of cheating.

Talking to mediapersons, SP City I SK Kalia said the accused, identified as Narotam Singh Saini, was arrested from Mithapur locality by a police team of division number four led by SI Darshan Singh.

The man, who was nabbed following a tip-off, allegedly duped several unsuspecting youths on the pretext of sending them abroad.

The police has also recovered two CPUs, one monitor, a fax machine, a type writer, key-board and several documents, including 20 passports, from the accused’s office on Model Town road.

Police division number four SHO Vibhor Kumar was also present in the press conference.

According to police, some of Saini’s accomplices were absconding. “Raids were being conducted on their possible hideouts.

They would be soon behind the bars,” said the SSP.

Jail irregularities under scanner

The Punjab government is actively working to check large-scale irregularities in various jails of the state.

A detailed report on the use of mobile phones by prisoners and the drug menace is also being prepared.

This was revealed by minister for jails and judicial and cultural affairs Hira Singh Gabria while talking to news persons before attending a function here on Monday.

He said there had been reports of some jail employees “working in cahoots with the criminals”. The guilty would not be spared,” he added.

He admitted that the jails in the state were overcrowded. He said a new jail would be constructed in 10 acres of land between Phagwara and Nawanshahr. Besides, two other jails were being set up in Jalandhar and Kapurthala.

He said the state government was taking active steps to improve the condition of all the prisons, including seven central jails at Patiala, Bathinda, Ferozepore, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar and Ludhiana. Free legal aids would be provided to the prisoners in the state, he added.

Talking about other plans, Gabria said the state government would soon introduce a “tourist train” which would originate from New Delhi and cover important destinations like Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Pathankot, Anandpur Sahib and Patiala to facilitate the tourists visiting Punjab.

He said the government would promote new tourist complexes at Phillaur, Nangal, Goindwal, Sultanpur Lzodhi and Hari Ke Pattan. Gabria said the state government would open a hotel management centre at Kurali and will also set up a heritage village there.

Also, a new package bus service would be started to facilitate the pilgrims visiting religious shrines in the state.

Dera Row
Schools, colleges to remain closed today

The functioning of commercial establishments, educational institutes and district courts in Jalandhar is likely to remain closed tomorrow owing to a Punjab bandh call given by Akal Takht in view of the ongoing tussle with followers of Dera Sacha Sauda.

District Magistrate Ajit Singh Pannu ordered closing of all government and private schools and colleges of the city tomorrow.

Even the executive committee of the District Bar Association held a meeting today after which the members announced that “No-work day” would be observed tomorrow. DBA secretary said the members would abstain from appearing in the courts to avoid any untoward incident and inconvenience to the litigants.

A meeting of the peace committee with representation from local units of political parties was convened by the DC in the evening in which he asked them to maintain law and order. SSP Arpit Shukla, MC commissioner S.C. Talwar, MLAs Sarabjit Makkar, Krishan Dev Bhandari, SAD district (urban) president Gurcharan Singh Channi, District Congress Committee (urban) president Arun Kumar Walia and representatives of other political parties also attended the meeting.

BATALA: SSP R.N. Dhoke said adequate security arrangements had been made in view of the bandh call. The police district has been divided into four sub-divisions where seven gazetted officers, 1,000 Punjab police men and 100 CRPF personnel would man the security measures. Param Deep Singh Teja, SP (Hq) would maintain vigil and supervision.

Kapurthala: All schools would remain closed in the district in view of the bandh.

Case against dera chief in Kapurthala court

In the ongoing row between Sikhs and Dera Sacha Sauda, two Amritdhari members of the Sikh community from Kapurthala have filed a criminal case against Dera chief Baba Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh in a city court here on Monday.

The case was filed in the court of duty magistrate S.S. Sahni under sections 295-A and 298 of Indian Penal Code.

In their four-page complaint, Rajinder Singh Dhanjal and Tajinder Singh Ahluwalia have accused the dera supremo of deliberately outraging the sentiments of Sikh community. Baba Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh got published an advertisement in some newspapers in which he got himself depicted, illustrated, portrait and represented himself as tenth master of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, the complainants alleged.

In their complaint filed through advocate Sandeep Singh Ahluwalia, both Rajinder and Tajinder further stated that the entire episode had caused grave anguish, distress and grief to the community members as imitation of any of the ten Sikh masters gurus is completely prohibited in their religion.

Meanwhile, advocate Sandeep Singh Ahluwalia said that the case has been fixed for June 2, for recording statements of the complainants.

Maintain calm, SGPC tells Sikhs

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur has appealed to the Sikh community to maintain peace, harmony and brotherhood so as to defeat the designs of the Dera Sacha Sauda chief.

Bhaur also said that the SGPC had summoned an emergency meeting of the executive on May 23 at Amritsar to finalise the next step.

Bhaur said a delegation of the SGPC would soon meet the President and the Prime Minister to apprise them of the entire situation.

Bhaur said the demonstrations and protest marches were being held at various places, including Banga and Nawanshahr.

He demanded that the government register a sedition case against the dera head for hurting the Sikh community and spreading lawlessness.

He said a case for hurting the religious sentiments was not sufficient as the dera head had tried to disturb the peace and harmony in Punjab.

Lauding the gesture of the Trust, Garg said students must grab this golden opportunity for shaping their career.

“Nothing is impossible if there is firm determination, dedication, proper environment and skill to tap the right opportunities at right times,” said the DC while sharing her own experiences with the students.

She asked them to exert their nerves to study hard for a better career. She also advised parents to provide them with a conducive environment for the purpose and gave them valuable tips to the students and parents.

District Education Officer, Joginder Singh Aulakh, said the Gyan Sewa Trust had been working hard for ushering in ‘educational revolution’ in the state.

The teething troubles being faced in the conduct of special coaching classes would be solved soon.

The success of these coaching classes would prove a boon for the coming generations, he added.

Suggestions given by parents, students and teachers were also heard for making the coaching classes better.

Trust member M.P. Singh and S.A.S. Kirmani, district Sarv Shikhiya, coordinator, Tarlok Singh Flora, district science supervisor, Balihar Singh Bains, principal, Iqbal Singh, also addressed the meeting. — OC

Principal seeks cancellation of FIR

Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Bhullarai, Kailash Wati, has sought cancellation of FIR registered against her for allegedly hurting the sentiments of a community.

Wati has been accused of removing the photograph of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar from the school premises and showing disrespect to it.

In a press conference held here on Monday, the principal alleged that some members of a particular community were bent on ruining her career and that is why blowing this matter out of proportion. Wati claimed she has been falsely implicated in the case. The school head said she has all respect for a great leader like Ambedkar who made played a key role in forming the constitution.

The principal claimed some narrow-minded people were trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the village.

She further said the FIR registered against her had no relevance and it should be cancelled.
