Indian history enchants Argentinean couple
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, April 26
Argentinean couple, Jasmine and Michel, both students of Ancient History and Archaeology in the University of Argentina, have been bowled over by the warmth and hospitality shown by Indians.

The couple today visited Bhirdana and Banawali, where the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had discovered 5,000-year-old townships of the Harrapan civilization. Though, the couple could not see much as the excavation work has been suspended due to extreme hot weather, they were full of praise for the love and affection they received from locals.

Michel, however, could not bear the extreme hot weather and complained of nausea and loose motions after returning from Bhirdana. The couple came to India on March 1 for completing their papers for masters' degrees in Ancient History and Archaeology and planned to stay here for about a month.

But, influenced by the natural beauty of India, they have decided to extend their stay to about four months. Both of them are busy completing their papers of 'Comparative Study of Ancient Civilisations of India, Egypt and South America.'

Talking to this correspondent at Hotel Natraj here, Jasmine said in Delhi they went to the National Museum where a couple, Deo Parkash Sharma and Madhuri Sharma, authors of book ‘Glimpse of Harappan Archeology’ provided tips about places worth visiting.

She said they would visit Gujarat and Pakistan in near future to complete their study on Harappan civilization. They had also visited sites of the Mayan Empire of 8000 BC of Mexico and Aztec and Inca Empires of Peru in connection with their studies.

The couple has so far visited Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kumayun, Dev Paryag etc.

Ban on smoking goes up in smoke

Karnal, April 26
It seems that the ban on smoking has no takers at public places, including the mini secretariat and civil hospital, in the district. Posing threat to the health of others through passive smoking, several officials are accused of flouting the rules by smoking openly at government establishments.

The Anti-Smoking Act was passed by Parliament in 2003. The law forbids smoking at public places and any person if caught breaking the law can be fined Rs 100 to 200.

But the authorities here seemed to be least bothered to ascertain if the rules are being adhered to strictly by their own officials.

A random visit by this correspondent to various places, including the mini secretariat, HUDA office, civil hospital, MC office, bus stand and railway station, revealed that hardly anybody bothers about the ban.

Situation is no different at government offices.

It was observed that government employees were flouting the law.

“You can see that saab himself smokes in his office'', says a bidi-smoking employee attached with a district officer.

But one can find policemen smoking on the third floor that houses the offices of the SP, DSPs and other district police officials.

Visitors to the government offices complain inconvenience caused to them due to smoking on the premises.

A female government employee is a chronic asthma patient and smoke causes tremendous trouble to her. Her colleagues also show their annoyance on converting the secretariat into “smoking zone''.

“Though we object to visitors smoking on the premises, we find problem with the colleagues. We have requested to them on several occasion but to no avail'', they told TNS.
