US army pistol recovered from Maoist activists

Yamunanagar, April 24
A pistol recovered from two persons, who were motivated by the Maoists and arrested from Yamunanagar, belongs to the US army and the other was a sophisticated revolver of Enfield make.

During the interrogation they said they were trying to set up base that could be activated at any given time.

Videocassettes, compact discs and literature seized from them has footage of Maoist training camps and inflammatory speeches by senior activists.

The accused - Samarat and Jagtar - were associated with the Jagruk Chatra Morcha (JCM). The police said several organisations and printed material associated with the Maoist movement was in circulation in the state.

Police officials said the association of a large number of women activists with such organisations was a cause of concern.

The police was preparing a list of senior activists of the JCM and other related organisations in the state and their arrest had not been ruled out.

The video material and literature were used to motivate activists to join such organisations, including the Shivalik Jansangharsh Morcha and the Krnatikari Advasi Mahela Sangh.

Several members of the JCM were also associated with Maoist activities, said the sources in the intelligence bureau and the Haryana police. The sources did not rule out the presence of more foreign weapons in the state.

“Generally anti-social elements carry country-made pistols but those two were imported,” said a senior police official.

“For army supply, USA” has been engraved on the 9-mm pistol recovered from them.

Meanwhile, a police team has been sent to Kanpur to investigate about the weapon.

When contacted, SP K.V. Ramana said investigations were on and the police was narrowing on suspects.

No tuition fee for girls in govt schools

Chandigarh, April 24
All government schools in Haryana will be free for girl students up to the plus 2 level. In a decision that is likely to benefit nearly 1.75 lakh girl students, the state government has announced that it is abolishing tuition fee in their case in these institutions.

Over the years, Haryana has been criticised for its skewed sex ratio, which was one of the lowest in the country. The decision to abolish tuition fee in government middle, high and plus 2 schools is a step towards breaking the male bastion in the state by facilitating education for women.

To ensure that girls are sent to school, the state has also taken other decisions like providing bicycles to girls to make it convenient for them to travel to school. The bicycles will be provided free of cost to girls living in villages that have no middle, high or senior secondary schools, so that they can go to school in adjoining villages.

The brainchild of Haryana education minister Phool Chand Mullana, the state education department is working on several other innovative schemes to make it easier for orthodox families to treat girls on a par with boys in the matter of education.

According to sources in the education department, girl students will also be eligible for free textbooks, computer classes, etc. All girls’ schools in the state are being provided with modern science laboratory equipment and other infrastructure so that girls can receive the same level of education as boys. Initially, girls from class 1 to class VIII will be eligible for free books, but girls who do well in the primary and middle class examinations will be given financial incentives in terms of scholarships to carry on with their studies.

According to department sources, Haryana has a little over 1.68 lakh students in government schools. Almost all girls from the economically weaker sections of society, where the parents are unable to pay fees, etc, a grant of Rs 150 has been provided for the purchase of stationery.

Other incentives to promote education among girls have also been introduced. Under the Rajiv Gandhi scholarship scheme, 38,733 students had been given scholarships and awards.

To further encourage girls, the toppers of all classes in every school have been awarded scholarships. The incentive includes a cash prize of Rs 750 to each topper from classes VI to VIII and Rs 1,000 to each topper from classes IX to XII.

MLA’s wife hurt in ‘accident’
Tribune News Service

Ambala, April 24
Ambala cantt MLA Devender Bansal's wife Anjali Bansal met with an accident on the Ambala-Chandigarh road this afternoon. Three persons, including a civil engineering student at MM College of Engineering at Mullana, were also injured.

There are conflicting versions to the accident. According to the MLA, the car being driven by his wife had simply brushed past a motor cycle and a motorcyclist had attempted to snatch her bangles after an altercation.

However, according to another version, Anjali was driving on the wrong side and she hit a three-wheeler and a motorcyclist.

Superintendent of police, Ambala, Amitabh Dhillon said Anjali was driving on the wrong side on the one-way road. “Her car collided with an autorickshaw and a motor cycle. Later, her car was stopped and an altercation took place. A case has been registered at the Baldev Nagar police station and we are looking into the matter,” he said.

The incident took place at about 11 am when Anjali Bansal, along with a relative, was going towards Ambala city in her car. She took a turn towards the Ambala-Chandigarh highway even though it is a one-way road. Her car collided with a three-wheeler before hitting a motor cycle. Two women travelling in the three-wheeler were injured while the motorcyclist sustained injuries on his right leg.

However, Anjali continued to drive on. A little later, a motorcyclist accosted her. An altercation took place and the motorcyclist hit the car windowpane with his helmet. The windowpane was shattered. Anjali received injuries on her arm and she was given medical aid at Sasan Hospital in Baldev Nagar.

The MLA said his wife was driving the Maruti Esteem car. She was accosted by a motorcyclist “with an intention to commit robbery”.

“The window pane of the car was shattered by the impact caused by the helmet. The motorcyclist attempted to snatch her ornaments. She was taken to the hospital where she received 10 stitches,” he said.

Ambala city municipal council president Harish Sasan said he had received a call about the accident. “Apparently, her car had brushed past a three-wheeler. A motorcyclist had spoken rudely with her after the incident. She had been assaulted by the motorcyclist. Anjali was taken to the Sasan Hospital where her wounds were stitched,” he said.

Civil engineering student Amandeep Singh, who sustained injuries in the accident, is the son of Naraingarh tehsildar. His father said Amandeep received injuries on his right leg and shoulder. He had been admitted to the civil hospital, Ambala city.
