Mewat villages to have potable water in 2 yrs
Tribune News Service

Nuh (Mewat), January 27
The Governor of Haryana, Dr A.R. Kidwai, has said that all villages of Mewat will have ample drinking water in another two years under the Rajiv Gandhi Renewal Drinking Water Scheme.

He made this announcement at the state-level Republic Day function at Yaseen Meo Degree College yesterday. He unfurled the Tricolour on the occasion.

According to him, the Rs 425-crore drinking water scheme will solve the potable water scarcity in the Mewat area.

He said the Congress government in the state had received investment proposals to the tune of Rs 43,000 crore from various investors during two years of its rule. Investments worth Rs 10,000 crore had been made, he added. Around 300 foreign companies had already made investments in Haryana in the past two years.

Lauding the state for its rapid growth and modernisation, he said the per capita income in the state was the second highest among the states in the country. He lauded the growing industrial prowess of the state in the manufacturing sector. He said 50 per cent of the cars and their spare parts produced in the country were manufactured in Haryana. Almost 80 per cent of the basmati rice exported from the country was also produced in the state, he added.

Touching upon the power issue, he said the state was pledged to increase power generation by 5,000 MW in another three years.

He said recruitments were being made by the state in the Health and Education Department.

He stressed upon the importance of education and urged for further strengthening the system in the state, particularly Mewat, considered to be one of the most backward districts in the state. He stressed on the need to provide vocational training to the youth.

According to many, the fact that the state-level Republic Day function was organised in Mewat indicated that the government and the decision makers were attaching importance to the district.

Officials ‘step over’ Mahatma’s rangoli on R-Day
Tribune News Service

Yamunanagar, January 27
A couple of officials of the district administration “stepped over” a rangoli portrait of Mahatma Gandhi during the official Republic Day celebrations at Tejli Sports Stadium here yesterday.

The organisers had put no fence around the rangoli portrait to save it from someone accidentally stepping on it. There were foot marks on the face and chest of the portrait.

It could not be known which official let the portrait and flag painting unfenced as officials preferred to remain mumon the issue. An official, requesting anonymity, however, said whatever happened was purely “accidental.”

“The moment they noticed it they walked off the portrait,” said the official. However, a large number of officials were of the view that who ever left the portrait unfenced should be taken to task. Deputy Commissioner Nitin Yadav was not available for comments.

In a similar incident, some “anti-social elements” blackened with soot a statue of Subhas Chandra Bose in the Railway Workshop area on Republic Day here. Police sources said efforts were on to trace the persons who defaced the statue. Local residents later cleaned the statue.

In another incident related with the freedom fighters and Republic Day, the Chandigarh Police yesterday registered six cases under Sections 3A of the West Bengal Provision of Defacement of Property Act, 1976, against Yamunanagar-based Saheed Bhagat Singh Samaj Sewa Morcha for allegedly erecting statues of freedom fighters on six roundabouts of the city.

Dr B. Madan Mohan, vice-president of the morcha, criticised the move of the Chandigarh Police. He said the Sector 34 police registered three cases, Sector 36 police two and Sector 39 police registered one case. “We have not committed any crime. We had asked for permission to hold a rally but the Chandigarh Administration did not allow us. So we placed statues of martyrs like Bhagat Singh and Lala Lajpat Rai on roundabouts,” said Dr Mohan during a press conference here today.

According to him the morcha was engaged in spreading public awareness about the freedom fighters and martyrs. The morcha had also installed statues of martyrs in Panchkula and Mohali. As per sources, the Chandigarh Administration had removed the statutes on January 25 and took them in its possession.

Weedicide smuggled from China damages wheat crop
Tribune News Service

Panipat, January 27
The sale of weedicide smuggled from China region’s markets has reportedly damaged wheat crop in thousands of acres in the state.

Reports of crop damage after the use of weedicide have been received from all over the state barring three districts of Gurgaon, Narnaul and Rewari. In Panipat district only complaints regard of damage in 170 acres have been received till now. The affected villages in the district include Patti Kalyana, Jatal, Machchloli, Bhadra, Babarpur, Sanoli Khurd, Garhi Besak, Jurasi Khas and Kiwana.

The State’s Agriculture Department has asked its officials in all districts to submit reports in this regard and samples of the damaged crops and weedicides had been sent to the Centre as testing facilities were not available in the state.

“The district agriculture officials sent a tentative report to the department which appeared to be unrealistic and they had been asked to prepare it again after a survey and submit it to the office of director by January 27”, said Mr R.K. Khullar, Director, Agriculture Department , Haryana.

However damages were contained up to a few thousand acres as the department taking an action banned the sale of weedicides against which the farmers had complained, claimed the director.

The area of crop damaged due to spurious weedicide should not exceed 2000 acres, added Mr Khullar.

Sources in the Agriculture Department said some companies were smuggling weedicide into country to evade heavy duties and this weedicide marketed by wholesalers through small vendors and commission agents was responsible for damage to the crop. The spurious weedicide was taken off the shelves by these sellers as soon as the Agriculture Department banned some weedicide brands in the last week of December, informed the sources.

However one seller at Panipat confessed he got the weedicide from a wholesaler from Mumbai and his source was being investigated, said the sources.

Explaining the reason behind the presence of smuggled and spurious weedicide in the market sources said the weedicide used for the wheat crop with its technical name Sulfo Sulfuron is manufactured by multinational companies in the country which then is transformed into Wet Dispersible Granules (WDG). As the highly specialised and costly technique in involved in manufacturing and converting the Sulfo Sulfuron into WDG the reputed and big companies were in the business only. Enticed with the high demand and bigger margin in the sale of weedicide in the region some unscrupulous companies were importing the weedicide from China illegally and poor quality of this smuggled weedicide could be the reason behind the crop damage, said the sources.

Chief Justice lays stone of judicial complex
Tribune News Service

Panipat, January 27
Coming down heavily on the apathetic attitude of the authorities responsible for providing infrastructure to the judiciary, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Vijender Jain said they took time to understand the problems being faced by the judiciary, which ultimately resulted in delay in providing justice to the litigants.

Mr Justice Jain was addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone of a judicial complex to be built at a cost of Rs 12 crore on GT Road here today.

Pointing out that the judicial complex at Panipat was being built after 17 years since the inception of the district and around 23,000 cases were pending in the courts here, Mr Justice Jain said the revenue districts should be carved out only when the infrastructure for judicial system was ready.

Asserting that the judiciary remained dependent on the local administration for infrastructure, the Chief Justice said the fundamental principle of delivering express justice to the people was to provide proper infrastructure to the judiciary and money put in it was not a charity.

Referring to the condition of the court premises in the region, Mr Justice Jain said he would prefer to withdraw his Judges from the courts where even basic facilities were not provided to the judiciary.

Justice Khehar, Chairman, Building Committee, Haryana, while speaking on the occasion, said he found during his visits to courts in Punjab that in Hoshiarpur courts did not have toilet facility for women and the court premises at Abohar and Dasuya remained inundated and could not be reached on foot during monsoon.

The differences between Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and local MP Arvind Sharma also surfaced on the occasion when the Chief Minister turned down his demand of constructing chambers for the lawyers saying that he did not believe in raising the demands for listening to the clapping from the audience.

Then Mr Arvind Sharma, who had already addressed the gathering, came forward again to announce Rs 10 lakh for the purpose from his local area development fund.

Nowhere in the state chambers were provided to the lawyers by the government, the Chief Minister, who was presiding over the function, said.
