State likely to be power surplus
in 5 years
Chandigarh, January 21 The move follows an increase in demand for power due to rapid industrialisation and projected growth keeping in mind the 68 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) that have been proposed to be set up in the state. As per plans, Haryana will make available 5770 MW for use in the state. Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) plans to add 2,000 MW by constructing its own generating plants and will get 3,770 MW from other sources over the next five years. There has been a rapid increase in power generation in Haryana over the years with the present installed capacity pegged at 4,039 MW against 343 MW in 1966-67 when the state came into
being. It is estimated that by the year 2010-2011,the state will have surplus power. To ensure quality and reliable power, an elaborate plan has been prepared by Haryana Power Utilities (HPU) to augment and strengthen the transmission and distribution network. For this, a capital investment of Rs 543 crore was made during 2005-06.During the current financial year, a huge investment of Rs 2,924 crore has been made for the development of infrastructure in the power sector. In Haryana, the average increase in the power requirement is recorded at 5 per cent annually. But it is now projected that with the state inviting a lot of commercial activity in the form of industry, SEZs etc, the power requirement is likely to increase by 14 per cent annually. A senior official said the state was serious about ensuring quality and reliability in the supply of power. |
Chautala misleading people on power generation
Kaithal, January 21 Mr Vidrohi said the claim of Mr Chautala that his government worked for the installation of 1540 MW power was misleading as Haryana had only 1587 MW generation capacity out of which the power units at
Panipat had 1360 MW generation capacity, Faridabad-based power plant’s generation capacity was 165 MW and WZC hydel project Yamuna Nagar had 62 MW generation capacity. Besides this Haryana had share of 2452 MW in central projects. He said all these projects were in operation before Mr Chautala took over as Chief Minister. He said former Chief Minister Bansi Lal had taken steps to improve power situation and had Mr Chautala continued with those steps the power situation in Haryana would have been different by now. Mr Vidrohi said on the power front Mr Chautala made only one contribution that he renamed Panipat Thermal plant after the name of his father Ch Devi Lal. He said the government led by Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda had initiated steps to add 5665 MW power generation capacity and this target would be achieved in next one to five years. Present power crisis will start vanishing after next 15 months claimed the spokesman. It was strange the INLD was criticising even the Hansi-Butana canal was not to the liking of the INLD and baseless objections were being raised on this issue. The spokesman also took to task INLD leaders for accusing the Congress government for bad law and order situation and said the Chautala government got released hardened criminals from jails as criminals were patronized by the previous government. Now the Chautala family misleading people by organising processions on frivolous issues. He said now farmers were getting Rs 23 lakh per acre for their land from the industrial houses whereas during Chautala’s tenure per acre price received by farmers for their land ranged between Rs 1.5 lakh to 4.6 lakh. Mr Vidrohi objected to the equating the killing of innocent children at Nithari in UP with murders of some people by a gang of criminals at Gurgaon. He said that at Gurgaon FIR in all cases but one were registered and cases were at trial stage. |

Surjewala seeks action against hoarders
Chandigarh, January 21 In separate letters to the AICC President, Mrs Sonia
Gandhi, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the Union Finance Minister, Mr
P.Chidambram, Mr Surjewala, chairman of the Kisan-Khet Mazdoor Congress, a front organisation of the Congress, reminded them that at the party Chief Ministers' conclave held in Nainital last September, it was decided that a countrywide operation against hoarding of foodgrains should be
launched. The Central Government had written to the states to take suitable steps in this direction. However, Mr Surjewala regretted, no state government had taken steps against the hoarding of foodgrains for reasons best known to
them. The senior Congress leader said the sharp increase in the prices of the foodgrains had made them beyond the reach of the common man. He attributed the increase in the prices to hoarding by big players. He also demanded that forward trading in foodgrains should be immediately stopped to check the prices. |

Illegal construction in forest area of Kurukshetra
Chandigarh, January 21 Forest officials at Kurukshetra have alleged that repeated requests were made to top officials of the district administration, asking them not to allow for any construction activity in the protected forests and reserve forest areas. However, top officials of the administration themselves led locals to break land in these areas and go ahead with the illegal construction activity. “Breaking of land for any purpose in protected forest is a cognisable offence under the Indian Forest Act, 1927. Even the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, forbids the diversion of forest land for any non-forestry purpose. However, it was reported to us that construction work was being carried out in the Protected Forest area on the Pehowa-Patiala road and also in the reserve forest area of Nikatpura, without any approval” informed a top forest official. The district administration has, however, denied that any construction was carried out by the locals with the help of the district administration. Mr T K Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, Kurukshetra, said no construction was carried out in the forest area, and only a passage for waste water was created by the local residents. Forest officials informed TNS that during the second week of December they learnt that an illegal construction work was being carried out in the Protected Forest area without any approval. A criminal case was filed against the guilty in the Environment Court , Kurukshetra, and forest guard concerned was suspended and the forester charge-sheeted. “Later, residents of Saraswati Khera village located near the Protected Forest, met us and asked for permission to construct a nullah. Our officials at Kurukshetra told them that they would have to seek permission from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, for the same and once granted, they could go ahead with the construction. However, they approached the top officials in the district administration, who gave them a go-ahead. Forest officials told the administration that a case was pending in this regard in the Environment Court, but they ignored our pleas and on January 18, the officers led the villagers to construct nullahs - near Saraswati Kheda and near Nikatpura,” alleged a senior official in the Forest Department. Now, the Forest Department has brought the matter to the notice of Chief Secretary, Haryana, and to the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner T K Sharma said that no pucca construction was carried out in the area. “Since waste water had accumulated in the villages, the villagers themselves dug a small passage for this water. Otherwise, this accumulated water could have led to break out of some disease,” he added. |
