Murder victim’s father demands arrest of Pinky
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, October 2
Demanding the arrest of the notorious Punjab cop Gurmeet, alias Pinky, convicted of murdering a Ludhiana-based resident, the victim’s father today said that Pinky should be dismissed from his service.

Stating this in a press conference here today, Mr Amrik Singh, father of Avtar Singh who had been murdered, said that even as Pinky had been convicted by the court, he had not been dismissed from his services as CIA Inspector at Fatehgarh Sahib.

Mr Amrik Singh said that he hoped that the court would pronounce a harsh sentence on the convicted cop on October 9, or else they would have to knock the doors of a higher court.

He also demanded the withdrawal of “false cases” against his son-in-law after the latter had “refused to take back his complaint”.

He also claimed that he had been offered as much as Rs 2 crore for settling the case.

But, he claimed, he had not succumbed to any greed or pressure tactics as he wanted to get justice for his son.

Mr Amrik Singh was accompanied by lawyer, Mr Shashi Sharma, and former MLA, Mr Tarsem Jodhan.

70 more jaundice cases reported in Phagwara
Tribune News Service

Phagwara, October 2
The Health Department authorities have held the Phagwara Nagar Council responsible for the jaundice outbreak in several parts of the town, even as 70 more cases of jaundice have been reported in the local Moti Bazar and the Satnampura area here today.

The Senior Medical Officer (SMO), Dr Yash Mitra, while talking to The Tribune here today said that he had written several letters to the NC authorities to make arrangements for clean drinking water supply in several parts of the town.

However, nothing had been done by the NC authorities in this regard, despite several reminders, he added.

The SMO admitted that jaundice cases were being detected in several parts of the town, including Moti Bazar, Daddal Mohalla, Mohalla Dharamkot and Mohalla Thanedaran.

Patients were being treated in various hospitals of the city, he said.

The Phagwara SDM, Mr Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, Nagar Council president, Mr Malkiat Singh Ragbotra, and the SMO visited the affected areas and advised the residents to drink boiled water.

Councillors Kusum Sharma, Bira Mal Baljot and Arun Khosla alleged that nothing was being done practically to solve the problem from the administrative side.

The jaundice outbreak has had the city residents up in arms against the authorities concerned. There have been protest rallies and dharnas against the allegedly indifferent attitude of the authorities.

The residents have been claiming that at least two persons have died of jaundice, even as new cases are being reported every day.

Meanwhile, a garbage dump was removed by the Nagar Council authorities near the local Shiv Mandir at Pacca Bagh today.

Several residents today protested against the “callous attitude” of the Nagar Council and the Health Department that could not initiate timely preventive measures.

Meanwhile, 30 NCC cadets of the local Bhai Lalo College visited door to door in the affected areas to educate the people about the preventive measures that could be taken.

Prince in limelight again, chief guest at Dasehra celebrations

Jalandhar, October 2
The last few months have been very busy for Prince. The five-year-old son of a farm labourer from a tiny hamlet in Kurukshetra has had the privilege of moving around several places in the country and being honoured.

Prince’s safe rescue from a 42-foot-deep borewell in which he remained stuck for more than 48 hours, showing his immense endurance, seems to have brought a pleasant twist into his life.

While the child seemed to be oblivious of all changes that had taken place, his parents seemed to be enjoying his celebrity status.

The family was here today on an invitation of Mr Raj Kumar Gupta, MLA and president of District Congress Committee (Urban), to attend the main Dasehra function at Burlton Park in the city. The chief guest of the show, little Prince, had been called to press the remote for setting alight the effigy of king Ravana.

Before the function, he and his family were presented to the media at a conference held at the Punjab Press Club here. Prince was accorded a welcome by the MLA who presented him a bouquet. Not only mediapersons, but also many city residents had gathered in the conference hall to “see” Prince.

Mr Gupta said that through the incident, Almighty had made His presence felt by coming to the rescue of Prince who had almost fallen into a death trap. “God saved him. We got him here so that we could present him to the residents on this auspicious day,” he said.

Glorifying Prince further, he said, “Look what a coincidence. His father’s name is Rama Chandra and he is here with us on this festival.” When asked as to what gift or prize money he had decided to offer to Prince on his visit to Jalandhar, he did not answer clearly.

Talking to mediapersons, Prince’s mother, Ms Taranjeet, said she had taken Prince to various places wherever he had been called.

“We have taken him to Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata,” she went on naming various important cities. Asked why he was being called to so many places, the reply came promptly, “People love to honour him.”

When asked whether Prince was going to school, she said, “He had been going off and on earlier, but not now.” Mentioning the reason, she said that he hardly had time to go to school. “Every other day, we are called somewhere or the other. How do we send him to school? He cannot spare time now,” she replied, as innocent Prince remained busy plucking flowers from the bouquet he had been presented. He was also busy playing with his younger brother, Gaurav.

When quizzed about the prize money they had been assured, Prince’s mother said she had received most of it, including an amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Haryana Government.

Punjabi Varsity students demand fee refund
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, October 2
Hundreds of students of Punjabi University now doing B.Tech (third semester) are yet to get a refund to the tune of Rs 7,500 that they had paid at the time of CET counselling conducted by Punjab Technical University last year.

While the admission brochure clearly stated that out of the total Rs 10,000 taken at the time of admission, Rs 2,500 would be retained by PTU as the counselling fee, the balance was adjustable in the tuition fee for the second semester. Even as the students have paid the fee for the third semester as well, the adjustment of Rs 7,500 which should have been made in the previous semester has not been made yet again.

The hapless students said they were caught between the claims and counter-claims of the two universities. “While the Punjabi University authorities tell us that they have not yet received a refund from PTU, the PTU officials claim that they had already sent the amount to Punjabi University. We really do not know where to go,” they rued.

The students of the University College of Engineering, Patiala, on the condition of anonymity, said it had been very taxing on their parents to arrange a huge sum for paying the fee every semester. They claimed that funds deposited by them as security in the hostel provided to them at the State College of Education, Patiala, last year had also not been refunded. They also claimed that when new rooms had been allotted to them in the hostel of their own campus this year, they were forced to pay the security yet again.

They claimed that the college had also taken an exorbitant amount of Rs 30,000 as security at the time of admission to be returned after completing the course. They claimed that the charges were in addition to an amount of Rs 48,390 taken as the first installment in the first semester.

The students said that their parents were burdened by the “huge amount” taken as security from them, even as the “fee structure was already quite high”. The students said that while there had been talks on rationalisation of the fee structure in professional colleges and a check on it by a retired judge, no hope was yet in sight for them.

Dr M.S. Grewal, Registrar, PTU, said that the refund of Rs 7,500 of the last-year students had already been sent to Punjabi University. Dr R.K. Sehgal, coordinator of B.Tech admissions at Punjabi University, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
