More than seven crore Indians were suffering from heart-related diseases, while a whopping 50 lakh of them, including those 25 per cent who were under the age of 65 years, died every year, said Dr Pruthi. Speaking at a seminar on the opening of a special heart-information cell — an initiative of BBC Heart Care Centre — Dr Pruthi said major risk factors could be controlled by a combination o f early screening, adoption of a healthy diet, reduction of obesity and by adopting stress-relaxation techniques. Dr Sushant Srivastava, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, BBC Heart Care Centre, said aggressive lifestyle modification, quitting of smoking and saying goodbye to high-fat foods were the keys to a healthy heart life. Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, and Mr Satwant Singh Johl, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, also spoke on the occasion.

Now a huge model of a human heart will keep reminding people passing through the local BMC Chowk to be extremely careful about the health of their heart.
The people of Punjab and north India are comparatively more vulnerable to heart diseases, owing to intake of cholesterol-rich food and stressful lifestyle.

The nine-foot by six-foot model of the heart has been set up by BBC Heart Care Centre here. Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, the Punjab Minister for Local Bodies, today, on the occasion of the World Health Day, unveiled the model.

“One in 20 persons is at the risk of acquiring heart disease in Punjab. Our objective is to make people aware of the importance of health of a very crucial organ of the body, which has been neglected owing to the lack of awareness,” said Dr Charanjit Singh Pruthi, the Managing Director of BBC Heart Care Centre.

“Ninety per cent of heart-related problems could be prevented if people made it a point to adhere to a healthy routine, exercise and stress-free life. Yoga is one of the best remedies for a healthy heart,” he added.

He said since the BMC Chowk here was the most important landmark and since BBC Heart Care Centre was already maintaining one of the islands of the roundabout, it was decided by the management to place the mega-heart model at the place.

“We think that every person passing through the chowk will take the image of the heart along with him, and this would keep him alert about the health of his heart,” said Dr Pruthi.

Jalandhar, September 24
Stung by the City Centre scam, now it seems to be the turn of the Congress to expose a “multi-crore scam”, wherein 22 acres of prime government land in Mohali were allegedly handed over for peanuts by the then Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to his close relative, Mr Adesh Partap Singh.

Though the land, according to the Punjab Minister for Industry and Environment, Mr Avtaar Henry, was worth crores of rupees, it was “gifted” by Mr Badal to Mr Adesh Partap Singh at a throwaway price of Rs 9 lakh per acre.

“The Punjab Government is going to initiate a high-level probe into the scam. We want to expose the Akalis and their misdeeds,” said Mr Henry.

He alleged that the SAD-BJP combine was not left with any valid issues, and hence they were resorting to clamour so that they could run away from discussion on the issue of development.

“They knowingly violated the discipline of the Assembly so that they could stay away from a healthy discussion. Whenever the Akalis have been out of power, they have raised clamour about various issues, but when they enjoy power, they forget all these issues,” alleged Mr Henry, who laid the foundation stones of the Chintpurni road, a community centre at Neelamahal locality, a new park at Bikrampura, and a drainage system at Deen Dyal Upadhya Nagar here today.

Phagwara, September 24
In the much-publicised Jalandhar kidney donation racket, the four accused who had surrendered in a judicial court at Jalandhar on Friday, were remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody yesterday.

Special Investigating Team (SIT), headed by Phagwara ASP, Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill, said that the four accused — kidney patient Kamaljit Kaur, her husband Jaswant Singh, both residents of Batala, Jujhar Singh, stepbrother of Kamaljit Kaur, and his wife Baljit Kaur, had been booked in Jalandhar on May 3 under Sections 419, 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC.

Ranjit Singh, the servant, who had allegedly sold his kidney, impersonating as Jujhar Singh, had already been arrested in the racket on June 6.

Dr Gill said that Ranjit had donated his kidney posing as Jujhar Singh, and had taken a 10-marla plot in return. The family members had presented photographs of Ranjit Singh with Jujhar’s wife to convince the authorities. The operation was conducted in a hospital at Jalandhar.

Dr Gill further said that after the four had surrendered in Jalandhar, the SIT had brought them to Phagwara on a day’s police remand.

On Saturday, they were again produced before the judicial court, which sent them in judicial remand for 14 days.

“More revelations are expected in the days to come in the said racket,” claimed the Phagwara ASP.
