Bhagat Singh’s ancestral village gears up for his birth anniversary celebrations
Khatkar Kalan (Nawanshahr), September 17 The function will mark the opening of a library on the back side of the museum and in front of the martyr’s ancestral home. The library will house hundreds of books written on him, his family and his contemporaries by scholars around the world. Though a library had already been set up in the village long time back, it had to be razed as a park was to be constructed to beautify the area around it. The setting up of a new library had been decided by the administration at that time. An announcement about the setting up of a spiritual hall close to the library is also expected to come. As demanded by the family, the hall may be named after the martyr’s sister, Bibi Amar Kaur. The proposed hall would be used to hold meetings. It could also be used by visitors from far off areas who would like to spend some time in the village. The museum, the house and the park in front have also been done up well for the day. The museum has got a number of new pictures of Bhagat Singh’s contemporaries. Pictures of six communists, Sur Singh from Amritsar, Inder Singh of Cavalry Segment, Balwant Singh and Bhai Ranga Singh from Khurdpur village in Jalandhar, Banta Singh and Dr Amar Singh from Sanghewal village in Jalandhar, all of whom were hanged between 1915 and 1917, were recently put up there. The efforts of Prof Malvinder Singh Waraich from Chandigarh are commendable in this regard. Some of the rare photographs of Kamagata Maru, Kartar Singh Sarabha’s aides, the Babbars and Ghadharites have also been put up in the museum. The museum has off late started getting more visitors. The original documents of the Lahore Conspiracy Case, Bhagat Singh’s diary, his trousers, watch, charred bones and blood shed on a copy of The Tribune’s Lahore edition, pebbles and sand are some of the priceless collections in the museum. Pictures of Bhagat Singh’s family members, his own picture when he was first arrested on July 29, 1927, at Lahore, those of hand grenades used by him, his signatures and pages of his notebooks find pride of place at the Shaheed-E-Azam S. Bhagat Singh Yadgar Bhavan, which houses the museum. Bhagat Singh’s nephew, Dr Jagmohan Singh, said the website of the martyr had also been upgraded with many new additions. “Anyone from any part of the world can have access to his original writings, his rare photographs along with those of his family and other freedom fighters as they click on www.shahidbhagatsingh.org,” he said. The increasing popularity of Bhagat Singh among the youth can be gauged from the fact that six youth organisations have come together to celebrate his 99th birth anniversary on September 28 this year at Desh Bhagat Yaadgaar Hall in Jalandhar. Pictures of the martyr commonly seen on rear windows of cars and buses plying in the region are yet other indicators of his increasing fan following. |
Bhartiya Jana Shakti to contest Punjab poll
Jalandhar, September 17 The party would also contest the forthcoming polls in Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh. The party could also form a poll alliance with the Rashtriya Lok Dal, headed by Mr Ajit Singh, if the latter’s party did not enter into any poll alliance with the Congress. “As far as possible, we would make our candidates contest on our own party symbol. As a national party we have to garner at least four per cent votes,” said Mr Gautam. Later, he indicated that the Congress could gain if his party contested the poll in Punjab because in that case the BJP’s position would be weakened. “But we would not be responsible for that as the BJP itself has created such a situation,” he said in an informal chat with media persons. He alleged that the previous governments, including that of the Congress, had not done anything for uplift of common people. “We will keep working towards this direction and we will strive to ensure all-around economic and social development of the people of India,” he claimed. |

Jalandhar, September 17 The colonies where developmental work would be done include Moti Nagar and Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar here. Speaking during different functions in these localities, Mr Henry criticised the extravagant spending habits of common people. He said that these habits were among the main reasons for the spectre of indebtedness. Apart from this, another major problem was the ever-increasing grip of drug addiction amongst the youth, he said. “Farmers and other people of Punjab have started spending too much money on marriages and other social functions. While doing so, they do not care about their resources. So, they are left with no alternative than to take money from private moneylenders at a high interest,” he said, adding, “This is the single biggest reason behind the increasing indebtedness of the people of Punjab. Another monster which is to be blamed is drug addiction that has assumed alarming proportions, particularly amongst youngsters. It has spread its tentacles far and wide.” To tackle the problem of drug addiction, the Punjab government has decided to strengthen the village-based sports and youth clubs, he added. He said that in combating the global competition and preventing frustration amongst the youth, parents could play a pivotal role. The parents should try that their wards go for job-oriented technical or professional qualifications. “The youth have to get the best of education even if they have to work in agricultural sector today,” said the minister. |
Suicide case: woman, in-laws trade charges
Kapurthala, September 17 Suman from Idah village here has alleged that her husband Jaswinder from Kang Sahib village falling in Jalandhar district ended his life by consuming pesticides a few weeks ago. In her complaint submitted to SSP Jalandhar, she claimed that she was leading a happy life since her marriage with Jaswinder on April 10, two years ago.
While Jaswinder had no complaints against her, his parents Tarsem Lal and Swaran Kaur, and other family members were forcing her to bring dowry which led to domestic tension, she alleged. Subsequently, Jaswinder and Suman started living separately and she gave birth to a daughter, but his parents kept harassing them on one or the other pretext, as a result of which Jaswinder ended his life by consuming pesticides, she alleged. Suman further claimed that her father-in-law had requested her to save the family’s honour by giving statement to the police that Jaswinder had died due to heart attack. At that time, he had promised her that she would be married to Jaswinder’s younger brother Balwinder with the consent of her parents. He had also told her that Jaswinder’s property would be named in their daughter’s favour, she claimed. In her complaint, she further alleged that as per the promise she was married to
Balwinder, but was forced to leave the house after a fortnight. She requested the police to book her in-laws for “forcing her husband to commit suicide”. However, Suman’s father-in-law Tarsem Lal alleged that she was responsible for his son’s suicide. He alleged that Jaswinder used to do farm work on his own land, but she forced him to take up some private job. The couple was at loggerheads on the issue and Jaswinder had ended his life due to that tension, he further alleged. Tarsem Lal denied that his daughter-in-law had been married to Jaswinder’s younger brother. He claimed that they had demanded the custody of their granddaughter as Suman had wanted to remarry some other person. |
