Computer teachers’ protest leads to traffic jam

Jalandhar, September 30
Taking full advantage of the laidback attitude of the district police, the Computer Teachers’ Union (contractual), Punjab, held a protest for one hour and a half at PAP junction here today afternoon, causing inconvenience to thousands of commuters.

The police officials, most of them in civil clothes, did not stop the protesters, probably in the wake of the action ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the Punjab Police for molesting veterinary students at Ludhiana a few days back.

The traffic jam began at 1:50 pm and went on till 3:20 pm, turning the situation difficult for commuters on way to Amritsar, Pathankot, Ludhiana and other adjoining districts. The traffic on all three sides was stopped as nearly 100 computer teachers from all parts of the state formed a chain around the T-junction.

Only a few pedestrians managed to cross over to the other side through narrow passages formed between the standing vehicles. A Home Guard Commandant, who tried to cross over in his gypsy from the right side, also had to move back.

The protest went on beyond the schedule planned by the teachers. “We had planned to hold the protest for just half an hour to press upon for our demands of regularisation and an increase in our salaries from an existing amount of Rs 3,080 to 3,600. The police did not stop us. We asked the policemen to hold a lathi-charge or any other harsh means to move us away but they are not doing that. So, we are still here”, said one of the leaders.

Later, the computer teachers got a public address system and lambasted the Chief Minister for not conceding their demands.

One of the protesters laid down in the chowk covered with a white sheet as other protesters sat by him wailing. They said that man lying down was playing the role of the CM.

Even as an SHO and Inspector Sita Rani Sharma, in charge of the women police station, were there at the spot, they did not do much to stop the protesters. Later on, SP Satinder Singh and DSP Charanjit Singh tried to convince the teachers to stop their protest.

The traffic remained jammed even two hours after the protest with vehicles moving at a very slow pace.

Ludhiana incident: Cong leader plans to move women’s commission
Varinder Singh

Jalandhar, September 30
Ms Harsimarjit Kaur, a senior Mahila Congress leader and a member of the State Commission for Women, is planning to move the National Commission for Women to seek justice for the aggrieved women veterinarians. She said the molestation of a women protestor and beastly behaviour by Punjab Police personnel in Ludhiana on September 27 was an unprecedented and shameful incident in a Congress-led state,

“The incident has stunned me. Can a normal citizen or even a Congress leader think even in his wildest of dreams that his daughters or sisters could be maltreated by police in such a beastly way? I come from a family of traditional Congressmen and I think that my party is not to be blamed for the incident. I feel that the guilty policemen should be brought to book. They should be dismissed as has been done in certain cases, where policemen were facilitating sale of drugs in Nawanshahr district. I believe that action taken by the state machinery in this case is not enough. I am going to take the case to the National Commission for Women and I have already talked to its chairperson,” Ms Harsimarjit Kaur said.

She is the first woman Congress leader to openly condemn the incident. “Whatever comes my way, my conscience is not allowing me to sit silently. Would every section of society have to stage dharnas or launch protests to get their legitimate rights now? This is a question which has been disturbing by inner peace. I won’t let the policemen go free. I have come out of initial reluctance and I strongly feel that I should speak for those who have been oppressed by the state machinery,” she added.

“If the state police have a shortage of women police personnel, then it should recruit more. But under pretext of shortage, they cannot indulge in the blame game. What was more shameful was that while policemen were molesting protesting women, policewomen witnessed the drama of shame silently. Do we need such police force at all?” questioned Ms Harsimarjit Kaur.

Mittal lambasts Centre, state govt
Tribune News Service

Phagwara, September 30
Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, former state BJP President and Foods and Supplies Minister, has condemned the wrong policies of the Union Government for ignoring the interests of the state.

The BJP leader alleged that the Congress-led UPA government did not seem sincere towards the state and even the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, did not bother about Punjabis, he said while talking to newspersons here today.

The decision of the Union Government, which approved Rs 16, 978.69 crore as a ‘rehabilitation package’ for farmers in suicide-prone 31 districts in four states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka, pointed to the fact that Punjab was not on the priority list as the state had been completely ignored.

The BJP leader alleged that the Congress was adopting anti-people and anti-farmer policies. He alleged that The Prime Minister neither watched the interests of the people during his two-day tour of the state nor did he bother about the farmers of the state in the Union Cabinet meeting.

Mr Mittal alleged that the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, did not represent Punjab’s case properly to convince the Prime Minister about the problems of the state. He alleged that the state government only gave false statements to mislead the people. He also took on the government on rise in prices of essential commodities like pulses, ghee, petrol, diesel, sugar, flour. The people of the state were fed up with the wrong, selfish and anti-people policies of the Congress and were waiting for return of the SAD-BJP regime, he added.
