Batsmen impress in warm-up match
Bangalore, August 9 After helping themselves to a few runs, the batsmen opted to retire in the 20-over a side match played between Rahul Dravid XI and Virender Sehwag XI on the penultimate day of the four-day camp. Batting first, Dravid XI made 197 for six while Sehwag XI scored 83 for 3. Sachin Tendulkar scored 23 with the help of four fours and also fielded for the complete duration of 20 overs, unlike yesterday when he took the field only for a few overs. Suresh Raina outshone his teammates with the highest score of 35 with six fours while Sehwag and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (3x4, 2x6) made 30 each. Dinesh Mongia and Mohammad Kaif scored 29 and 25, respectively. Yuvraj Singh, who scored 16 (2x4), managed to pick two wickets as well and Sehwag also took one apiece. Ajit Agarkar was dismissed by Yuvraj on 2 but he continued to bat. However, he could score only five more runs before being shown the door, again by the Punjab player. Ramesh Powar scored 4 in his first stint but returned to score 20 more runs while Harbhajan hit 12. Irfan Pathan scored 10. India 4th in Test ranking DUBAI:
England toppled Pakistan from second spot in the LG-ICC Test rankings after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in their four-match series to make sure the Ashes remains a battle of top two teams. England beat Pakistan by 167 runs at Headingley yesterday to clinch the series. But the gap between England and toppers Australia ahead of their series beginning in Brisbane in November is still to be decided. It could be as few as 11 rating points if England beat Pakistan again at The Oval in the fourth Test, starting on August 17, and so claim a 3-0 victory. Whatever is the result, the positions of the top four teams will remain unchanged, other than a few points difference between them, according to an ICC release here. Meanwhile, India was sitting pretty at fourth place and Sri Lanka consolidated its position in fifth spot with a nerve-jangling one-wicket win over South Africa that secured a 2-0 series win over the Proteas. Meanwhile, Anil Kumble gained two places to be sixth in the bowlers’ list while Team India skipper Rahul Dravid hung on to the second spot behind his Australian counterpart Ricky Ponting in the batting table of the latest ICC Test Rankings issued here today. The veteran Indian leg-spinner now ranks a step above Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar and Kiwi pace spearhead Shane Bond. The only Indian to be close to Kumble in the list is Irfan Pathan who sits steady at 14th in the bowling chart and fifth in the allrounders’ table. In the batting chart, Dravid remained static behind Ponting and his deputy Virender Sehwag is the next in the table at the 14th
position. — PTI, UNI |

Shooting takes wings in Badal
Bathinda, August 9 Avneet’s success has done wonders with the admissions too, as number of girls coming to the college has shot up. Avers Avneet: “During my days in the college there were only a few takers for shooting, but now a number of girls are joining the institute only for the sport.” They would tell Avneet: “We want to be like you.” Veerpal Kaur, college coach, said they had 29 lanes in their shooting range at present and they propose to increase it to 52, out of which 10 would be electronic. She told that a Chandigarh-based architect has been engaged to prepare its map. College Principal Kuldeep Kaur said: “Though we have shooting in our college for the past few years, but the sport’s popularity has increased manifold in the wake of Avneet’s feats at the international arena.” The coming days may well witness the advent of another Avneet from the college, as renowned shooting coach Mr Sanjay Chakraborty is training the girls for the forthcoming selection trials. Praising the college for infrastructure and training amenities, Chakraborty said: “Punjab is coming up very fast in shooting, as youngsters are taking up the sport seriously.” He said shooting was gaining popularity because of it being an individual sport. “One doesn’t need any sports body’s backing in this game and even parental support is enough to make an individual excel,” he added. The noted coach said the country was facing a dearth of infrastructure and coaches in shooting. Indian coaches were not as much acquainted with new techniques as their foreign counterparts, he added. On India’s chances in Asian Games and Olympics, he said: “We need to keep our fingers crossed in the latter, as luck plays a vital role in it. As far as Asian Games are concerned Indian shooters are only good in air rifle, trap and double trap and they need to work on other events too.” He said Chinese and Korean shooters would pose a big challenge, as they were good at all of about 17 events. Regarding Avneet’s performance, he said she was an outstanding shooter, but people should not expect her to remain at peak all the time. |
Erring woman judo coach shifted
Patiala, August 9 Confirming this decision, the NIS Regional Director (RD), Mr Laxman Ranawat, said Rajbir Kaur had been shifted as the institute no longer wanted to utilise her services at Patiala. Mr Ranawat added that the transfer had not been made on the basis of any inquiry report but on administrative grounds. Interestingly, Rajbir Kaur, who had changed her name to Rozy Jamwal, an issue that had sparked off a row between her and Assistant Director (AD) Mangat Goel, has been absent from duty since March 13 this year. She was posted in the Physical Conditioning Department of the institute and was responsible for giving treatment to women trainees attending various national camps at the institute. Rajbir’s eccentric behaviour had also surfaced on an earlier occasion when she had entered into a scuffle with another women coach following which judo coaches posted in two SAI schemes — the Centre of Excellence and the SAI Training Centre (STC) — had complained in written to the authorities. Taking cognisance of the complaint, the authorities had transferred the coach to the institute’s library before sending her to the Physical Conditioning Department. |
