Dalmiya vows to hit back at BCCI
Kolkata, July 31 “I don’t believe in witch-hunting, but a lot of wrong has been done to me by the BCCI. This is not cricket. I can only say that whatever they do will not go unchallenged,” the seasoned administrator told a media meet after defeating challenger Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee. “I will prove the truth. I needed a platform to bring truth to the fore. That is why I chose to fight the elections despite Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s advice not to contest,” Dalmiya said. Pointing out that the board had suspended him from attending its meetings, slapped two show-cause notices and even filed an FIR against him, Dalmiya said, “I won’t be vindictive. But it has to come out who is the real culprit.” Asked how he proposed to utilise the CAB platform to fight the BCCI, Dalmiya said, “I myself don’t know. How we deal will not be in my hand. It is so confidential that I would like to keep it with me.” Dalmiya called Sourav Ganguly a “bachcha” (child), responding to persistent questions from scribes on whether he would still back Ganguly, who had sent an email days before the CAB elections accusing the ruling faction of playing with his career. As the CAB president, Dalmiya said he was committed to helping the players of Bengal. “I’ll definitely help him,” he told a press conference. “Why only Sourav? As the President and Secretary of the BCCI I stood by Virender Sehwag during the ball tampering controversy. I also supported Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh when the going got tough for them,” he said. “I have always looked after players. It is a religion for me. And, I cannot compromise on this.” Asked whether he would fight for Ganguly’s return to the Indian team, Dalmiya said, “Why not? I’ve always been optimistic about his return. I’ve always said that there is a lot of cricket left in him.” Dalmiya said, however, that if the CAB members wanted, there could be a discussion on Ganguly’s allegation that his faction had leaked Indian coach Greg Chappell’s email to the board last September.

Evil triumphed over
good, says Bengal CM
Kolkata, July 31 The Chief Minister said he had done the right thing in asking Dalmiya to step down, but since that did not happen, he had to back Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee as the presidential candidate. “It was a fight between good and evil” Bhattacharjee remarked. “The good forces were defeated but it happens like this at times”, he commented. He said he did not brother what others felt or talked about his role in the CAB elections and as long as he was the Chief Minister, he would continue to take such steps for “cleansing” the CAB. Meanwhile, veteran CPM leader Jyoti Basu today criticised Bhattacharjee for his “involvement” in the CAB elections and his statements against Dalmiya. Basu, who had earlier resented the Chief Minister’s decision to back Mukherjee as the presidential candidate, said today, “Bhattacharjee should not have done this”, adding that he had asked party secretary Biman Bose to discuss the matter at the party’s state secretariat and, if necessary, at the Left Front meeting. Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee said, “Dalmiya’s victory is a defeat for the Chief Minister”. She said Bhattacharjee should resign in the wake of his candidate’s defeat. Dr Manash Bhuiya (Congress) said the Chief Minister had been taught a lesson not to interfere in such matters. |
Board Secretary lashes out at Wright
Mumbai, July 31 “What does Wright know about India? He comes from a small country which does not have the huge number of cricketers which we have. We have been doing a very good job over a number of years,” board Secretary Niranjan Shah said over the phone from Rajkot. “It’s a democratic process. What’s wrong in selectors backing players from their region if they know their potential? Do not our MPs talk about issues concerning their region in the House?” he asked. “He’s talking about Gavaskar helping the players as the team’s batting consultant even though he was present as the coach. He should have raised the issue then and not kept mum if he was not happy. “He should have raised the issues when he was in the job and not after having made a good packet as compensation. What’s the use of talking now,” Shah asked. Wright has let out some sensational inside information regarding his relationship with Sourav Ganguly and controversial selection decisions in his just-published book “Indian Summers”.

Team India in battle mode!
Bangalore, July 31 The seven-day camp has been a departure from the usual training when the players ran around a few plastic cones and did catching practice. The military-like training schedule on the penultimate day of the camp was complete with wall and pit jumping, rope bridge crossing, trekking and target shooting which was a hit with the players. The activities, which were given a touch of improvisation by trainer Gregory Allan King, were thoroughly enjoyed by the players who, after the strenuous workout from 7.30 am to 3 pm, confined themselves to their rooms in the evening. They will reassemble for one final session of outdoor activities tomorrow before dispersing home for a short break. The team will reconvene for skills development camp here on August 5 and will be joined by coach Greg Chappell, currently on a holiday, on the previous day. The team will depart for Colombo on the night of August 10. The tri-series runs from August 14 to 29.

Eves win ODI series against Ireland
London, July 31 Sumra scored 62 and Raj hung on to make 66 to propel Indian team to an impressive 239 for four in their stipulated 50 overs after Ireland won the toss and sent them to bat. Former captain Anjum Chopra and Hemlata Kala chipped in to contribute 23 and 30 runs, respectively. However, the target was revised for the hosts and reduced to 214 in 40 overs by the Duckworth-Lewis method after rains interrupted play. Ireland scored 135 for 8 with C Beggs scoring 63 runs. For India, Nooshin al Kadeer and Jhulan Goswami were the pick of the bowlers returning 2-20 and 2-25 respectively. The Indian team will now travel to England to play a one-off twenty20 match, two Tests and five one-dayers.

Netherlands clinch Champions Trophy
Terrassa, July 31 Two first half goals was all Netherlands needed to strike gold. Taeke Taekema converted Netherlands first penalty corner opportunity and Teun de Nooijer was left free at the top of the circle to score a field goal. Timo Wess scored off Germany’s only penalty corner in the second half but their chances of salvaging a draw were dealt a blow eight minutes from time when Philipp Zeller received his marching orders after a yellow card. Spain finish third
Two missed penalty strokes cost Australia dear after a 2-2 draw in regulation time against Spain. Three minutes after the start of extra time, Australia earned a penalty stroke, disputed for several minutes by Spain with umpire Hamish Jamson, but Brent Livermore hit the post. The match went to penalties and Australia’s Luke Doerner failed with Australia’s last penalty stroke to hand Spain third place. “This result shows that all the teams are very close but I am confident of our team’s chances at the World Cup,” said Maurits Hendriks, Spain’s coach. “It was always going to be a very close match and it only takes one little mistake and it can be very costly,” said Colin Batch, Australia’s assistant coach. “In this tournament we have taken substantial steps forward in our preparation for the World Cup.” Luke Doerner converted Australia’s first penalty corner three minutes into the second half and Eduard Tubau punished a defensive error to get a free shot on goal to score for Spain. Michael McCann set up Grant Eglington to also get a free shot on goal for Australia to lead 2-1 before Spain’s Pol Amat deflected in a free hit from outside the circle to equalise.

India retain sixth spot in hockey
New Delhi, July 31 India has not added to the 1155 points it had last December but is still ranked among the top six teams in the sport. Archrivals Pakistan, who finished fifth at Terrassa, are placed one spot higher with 1373 points. The list shows no changes at the top but after their fourth place finish at the Champions Trophy, top-ranked Australia are running the risk of losing their number one position to the Netherlands. The Aussies, with 1695 points, are being closely chased by the Dutch, who lifted the six-nation title in Spain and have 1638 points. Germany and Spain stay in third and fourth spots, respectively. Argentina are the only competing team in Terrassa to improve their rankings, moving up two spots to seventh. Top 10 teams: Australia (1695), Netherlands (1638), Germany (1565), Spain (1518), Pakistan (1373), India (1155), Argentina (1075), Korea (975), New Zealand (833), South Africa (750).

Damaged gun costs Rathore place in final
Zagreb, July 31 Rathore, whose perazzi gun was lost in transit and found last month, shot 139 to finish eighth after the qualifying rounds. Agonisingly, his tally was one point behind the six finalists’ score. The Indian was leading the field in the first half after carding 47 and 48 but his subsequent poor score of 44 left him just one point short of making the grade and ended up eighth. The Army marksman, who had won the bronze medal in last edition at Cyprus in 2003, said his gun was damaged in the three weeks when it was misplaced by the airlines on his way back from Cairo. New Delhi:
Pemba Temang finished ninth in the rapid fire pistol event and Gagan Narang ended up 59th in the 50m rifle 3 P section of the tournament at Zagreb. JCT Mills win
Chandigarh, July 31 Playing an attacking game, JCT took an early lead when wing back Daljit Singh sent a cross for the diminutive Baldeep Singh who made no mistake in putting the ball in the net in the ninth minute. Thereafter, the two teams had an equal share of the exchanges. BSF also made some close calls and on one occasion, veteran striker Gurjit Atwal’s well-directed header sailed over the bar. JCT also tried to consolidate the lead in the second half through some intelligent moves but had to remain content with the one-goal advantage in the end. |
