Stranded passengers wait for an hour

Passengers of a Volvo bus which departed for Gurgaon this afternoon were put to a lot of inconvenience when two of its drivers dumped the vehicle and left the passengers stranded midway to fend for themselves.

2 try to sell NRI’s land by fraud, held

The Chandigarh Police today arrested a Chamkaur Sahib resident and his associate while the duo was allegedly trying to sell a chunk of land, worth Rs 17 crore, belonging to a London-based NRI, Dr Jatinder Singh, by impersonating as the owner and his relative.

Aspiring ‘baddie’ is back home
Chandigarh, July 31
Fagged out and famished, he desperately wanted to savour foodstuff at a kiosk near the Delhi railway station. But 13-year-old Dinesh Godara, with eyes starved of dreams, had just three one-rupee coins and a distance of over 200 kilometres to cover. Instead of succumbing to the temptation of satisfying his appetite by eating that samosa, he saved the dough for calling up his parents in Sector 39 after reaching Chandigarh.

2 more cholera cases in city
Chandigarh, July 31
Two more cases of cholera have been detected from villages of the city. Admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, and the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, the patients are two-year-old Indal of Hallo Majra village and seven-year-old Samina of the fruit and vegetable market, Bardana Huts, Sector 26.

Motorcyclist killed in mishap
Chandigarh, July 31
An Air Force employee tonight died after his motor cycle collided head-on with a truck at the Faidan village barrier here. Sources in the Sector 31 police station said the accident took place at around 7 pm when the victim was on his way back home.

Decision on adoption of Punjab MC rules deferred

The Municipal Corporation at a House meeting today deferred decision on the issue of relaxation in levying tariff on domestic water consumption instead of tariff on commercial water consumption by doctors, architects, dentists and professionals operating from residential areas.

With the declaration of municipal election results last night, different factions of the Congress and others have begun a search for an incumbent for the all-important post of president of the civic body. According to rules, the election of the Municipal Council chief is held within 15 days of the declaration of poll results.

Have you heard of a person not voting for himself. That is what has happened in the Mohali civic poll, the results of which were declared yesterday. Mrs Surinder Pal Kaur, a candidate contesting the elections from ward 23, got zero votes while another candidate, Mr Kulbir Singh, from the same ward, proved to be a shade better and managed to get 2 votes.

UT signs pact with Power Grid Corpn

The electricity wing of the UT Engineering Department today signed an agreement with Power Grid Corporation Limited for setting up of a National Load Despatch Centre at New Delhi for power utilities. The agreement was signed by the Finance-cum-Secretary Engineering, Mr S.K. Sandhu, and Executive Director, N.R. Chanda, on behalf of the PGCIL.

Farewell to Punjabi Tribune Editor

The Punjabi Tribune Editor, Mr Shingara Singh Bhullar, was accorded a warm farewell on completion of his term here today. He retired after 24 years of service in the Punjabi Tribune. While addressing a function in his honour at the Press Club, Mr Dalbir Singh, Deputy Editor, said Mr Bhullar was an epitome of patience, commitment and dedication.

Mr Daljit Singh, Foreman of Punjabi Tribune, retired here today after putting in 28 years of service. He joined The Tribune in August 1978. Mr Singh was given a warm send off by his colleagues.

Mr Naresh Kumar, Reviser, The Tribune, retired today after putting in 38 years of service. He joined The Tribune in 1968 at Ambala. Mr Naresh Kumar was given a warm send off by his colleagues.

Man poses as buyer, goes off with vehicle
Chandigarh, July 31
An unidentified man posing as a prospective buyer decamped with a motorcycle belonging to a Sector 38 resident on the pretext of taking a test ride. The police has arrested one person who introduced the man to the victim.

2 held for making fake ration cards
Chandigarh, July 31
The police today arrested two city residents who, along with an Assistant Food and Civil Supplies Officer, were allegedly involved in preparing fake ration cards. The police said the officer is still at large.

HC reprieve for residents of Kishangarh
Chandigarh, July 31
The Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the dispossession of some residents of Kishangarh village from their houses here today. The order was passed on a petition filed by Mr Ranjit Singh and 30 other residents of the village, all residing in the village since the last many decades.

Blood donation camp in memory of Udham Singh
Chandigarh, July 31
The local unit of the All-India Anti-Terrorist Front today organised a blood donation camp in memory of Shaheed Udham Singh at Ambedkar Bhawan here. As many as 107 persons donated blood at the camp conducted by a team of doctors from the PGI, according to a press note issued here.
