Court appoints Foujdar as observer
Subhrangshu Gupta & PTI
Kolkata, July 24 The chief metropolitan magistrate of the city civil court, Mr P.K. Sarker, in his ruling appointed the former judge for conducting the elections. He will have to submit his report to the court within three days of the elections. The court also directed the Director-General of the West Bengal Police to oversee that law and order was maintained where the election would be held on July 30 and if the observer sought help of the police, it would provide all necessary assistance. Both the presidential candidates, Jagmohan Dalmiya and Prasun Mukherjee, had agreed to accept the former judge as the observer. Initially, both the groups suggested two different names for representing their respective groups as observer, which the CPM rejected. Meanwhile, West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty today dismissed insinuations by Sourav Ganguly that Jagmohan Dalmiya had leaked coach Greg Chappell’s controversial e-mail. “Ganguly’s allegations are not correct. I can say with full responsibility that those, against whom he has made the allegation, did not leak the mail,” Chakraborty told newspersons in the Assembly lobby. Sourav Ganguly has been in the habit of forgetting and ignoring his mentor, Chakraborty alleged. Chakraborty, who is known as an active member of the anti-Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee lobby, today came forward in support of Jagmohan Dalmiya in the CAB elections against city police chief Prasun Mukherjee, Chief Minister’s candidate in the CAB presidential post. Recalling Ganguly’s “ungratefulness”, Sports minister said it was he who first gave him the opportunity to play in a county match in England in the 1980s when Sourav was a mere 13-year-old. “ But I had never heard Sourav of acknowledging this”, alleged Chakraborty. Sports minister disclosed that Dalmiya agreed to withdraw from the elections provided any one of the following persons he suggested was accepted in his place — Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, former CAB president Biswanath Dutta, and former Chief Minister as well as CAB president Siddhartha Sankar Ray. He also suggested my name. But unfortunately, none was acceptable to the Chief Minister, said Chakraborty. The Sports Minister said he was not holding any brief for Dalmiya and there was no denying the fact that like most of us he too had his lapses. But he had his contributions too to the cricket and the cricketers, which one should not forget. It is pity that when Dalmiya has been in trouble and a victim of the Pawar-politics, we all would be leaving him, Chakraborty remarked. AIFF president and Union Information Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi criticised the Chief Minister for interfering into the CAB elections. State PWD minister Kshiti Goswami too opposed Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s involvement in the CAB matters. But state municipal minister Ashoke Bhattacharyya supported Chief Minister’s move in ousting of Dalmiya, which has been implicated in the financial scandal. However, CPM state secretary Biman Bose who is also Left Front chairman and an important Politburo member, reiterated that neither the party nor the front was in any way involved in the CAB elections. |

India A go down to Kiwis
Melbourne, July 24 After restricting India A to a modest 216 all out in 50 overs, New Zealand A raced to the target in 34.1 overs for a creditable win. Opener Gautam Gambhir (64) and middle-order batsman S Badrinath (63) showed some resistance to take India A to a respectable total of 216 all out off 50 overs. Gillespie was the wrecker-in-chief, claiming five for 35 off 9.4 overs. Off-spinner Nathan McCullum was the next successful bowler for New Zealand A with 2 for 41. Skipper Peter Fulton hammered an unbeaten 57-ball 54 to see his side through in style.

A day of stalemates
Terrassa, July 24 Taeke Taekema scored once from three penalty corner chances for the Netherlands while Australia’s Troy Elder drove in a field goal set up by Robbie Hammond in a close affair. “We played better in the first half while the Netherlands controlled the second half,” said Colin Batch, Australia’s assistant coach. “Neither team wanted to lose, so at the end it turned into a stalemate, although we were happy with the way we created space, which we have not been able to do lately against teams from Europe,” Batch added. Spain looked to be in total control as they dominated the midfield throughout their match after taking the lead with a 19th-minute penalty-corner conversion from Santiago Freixa. But an Argentine gamble on two extra strikers in the final 10 minutes paid dividends with Tomas Argento scoring 35 seconds before the hooter with a backstick strike on a bouncing ball in the middle of the circle to level at 1-1. “Our tactic was to try to score with the extra strikers and the last minutes of the game were the time to do it, not before,” said satisfied Argentine coach Sergio Vigil. There was a similar upset draw in the earlier match when a poised German side appeared to be in the driver’s seat thanks to two early goals by Christopher Zeller. But Sohail Abbas converted a penalty corner to keep Pakistan in the hunt before half time and he sent home another penalty corner within three minutes of the restart to equalise as the Pakistanis upped the pace. As the Europeans wilted in the heat, Pakistan were buoyed by a Shakeel Abbasi field goal that pushed them in front. But their joy ended just two minutes short of the final whistle when Matthias Witthaus split the defence to find the net with a powerful backstick drive. Pakistan coach Asif Bajwa lamented that his team dropped their guard late in the game after scenting victory. “There were defensive lapses when Germany applied pressure in the last 10 minutes and the players did not listen to me when I was shouting at them,” he said. “They seemed to be carried away with the possibility of winning against Germany,” he added. Like the Kookaburras on Saturday, German coach Bernhard Peters paid tribute to the Pakistanis’ verve and determination. “My players were surprised by the intensity of Pakistan in the second half and we did not play our structure because we lost our ball control when in possession,” he said.

India defeat China U-20
Vancouver, July 24 N P Pradeep and Manjit Singh were on target for the Indians, while Tang Jiashu pulled one back for the Chinese outfit. The result should give some confidence to the Indian think-tank and players in the lead-up to the Doha Asian Games in December as China are considered to be one of the fancied teams in the competition. India started brightly in the third-place playoff and had a lot of the ball possession in the initial stages but could not create any chances. Gradually, the Chinese team came into the match and both sides start attacking. N P Pradeep broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark when he headed in a Renedy Singh corner. But India went down to 10 men five minutes before half time when forward Sushil Kumar Singh was sent off after he missed an overhead kick and hit Chinese defender Zhou Yun on the head with his left foot. The numerical advantage encouraged the Chinese to mount more raids into the Indian territory. Houghton made changes to deal with the problem and brought in skipper S Venkatesh and Steven Dias for Bibiano Fernandes and Renedy Singh, who led the team in the first 45 minutes. In the 65th minute, Micky Fernandes came in for Samir Naik and a minute later, India got the crucial second goal in a counter-attack. Steven Dias’ shot was blocked in front of the Chinese goal but Manjit was on hand to tap the ball in and double India’s lead. The Chinese attacks now became more desperate but the Indian defence, ably marshalled by goalkeeper Sandip Nandy, held firm. However, the Chinese pulled one back when Tang Jiashu scored from a corner in the 76th minute. With a quarter of an hour left to play, they now threw everything at the Indians in search of an equaliser but Houghton’s men defended stoutly to finish third.

Zvonareva wins Cincinnati Open
Cincinnati, July 24 Zvonareva, who vanquished seven-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the semifinals on Saturday, nabbed one more upset for the week with her 6-2, 6-4 victory over Srebotnik. She turned back a late challenge from the fourth seed, who battled back from 1-3 down to even the second set at three-all. The Slovenian saved one match point before succumbing in 56 minutes. Sania-Marta lose in final
Mason: Sania Mirza and her Polish partner Marta Domachowska failed to raise their game at crucial junctures as they went down 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 to the top seed Italian-Argentine pair of Maria Elena Camerin and Gisela Dulko in the women’s doubles final of the $ 175,000 Cincinnati Open. The Indo-Polish pair, seeded third in the event, only had their inconsistency and poor serve to blame for the loss. However, despite being inconsistent, Sania and Marta were praised by their opponents for their aggressive play by the winners. —

Missing boy case: DAV Principal gets clean chit
Patiala, July 24 Documents reveal that Detective Inspector Tony Riordan of Cleveland Police, Middlesbrough, in a report detailing the circumstances of Dalbir’s disappearance, said, “Dalbir was part of the school tour organised by Manoj Rajan, a resident of Sector 7-C, Chandigarh, and Surinder Mohan Devgan. Dalbir, along with a majority of the members of the cricket team, went to the Middlesbrough town centre on July 10 for shopping. The group members dispersed during the course of the afternoon. Later, Dalbir failed to turn up at the scheduled meeting point. Subsequent inquiries by Rajan and Devgan failed to locate Dalbir and they reported his disappearance to the Cleveland police.” The report of the Detective Inspector goes on to state, “The Cleveland Police has carried out in-depth inquiries to locate Dalbir. His disappearance has been extensively reported in the local and national media and no sightings have been reported. No incidents of a suspicious nature were reported on the day of his disappearance.” Giving a clean chit to the Principal and Rajan, Riordan’s report finally states that, “During the inquiry, both Rajan and Devgan have assisted the police and we are grateful to them for their assistance.” Rajan, who had been designated as the “tour coordinator”, has nothing to do with the Patiala-based DAV school management. Meanwhile, it has come to light that of the 19 boys who proceeded on the trip on an invitation by the Salburn Cricket, Bowls and Tennis Club, Cleveland, at least six were not students of the school. They are Harneet Singh (Fatehgarh Sahib), Kohimaan Singh (Attalan village, Samana), Harinder Singh Bedi (Fatehgarh Sahib), Prabhkirat Singh Grewal (Sangrur), Baljeet Singh (Pehowa, Kurukshetra) and Varinder Singh (Bholath, Kapurthala). Incidentally, both Mr Devgan and his wife Vinod Vatsa, Principal of MHR Senior Secondary School, Bathinda, have been suspended by the New Delhi-based DAV management. However, Mr Devgan claimed that his suspension had nothing to do with the controversy. He said the suspension orders had come because he had proceeded on tour even though the management had not sanctioned his overseas leave. Interestingly, the two coaches who accompanied the team, Sher Singh Sandhu, designated as coach, and Harpreet Singh, who had been given the designation of sports in charge, have no association with cricket. |
